ESAA Track and Field Championships, Birmingham, 12-13th July 2024

Simon Baker reported “We are now fully in Championship season and last weekend saw the English Schools Championships again held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.  This is one of the largest Athletics meetings in the world with 1,800 young athletes taking part.

The Club again had good representation with 8 of our young athletes picked to represent either London or Middlesex.  With most having moved up a year group they were competing against athletes a year older.  The action started early on Friday morning with Trey Corlis comfortably finishing 3rd in his heat of the SB 110mH.  Unfortunately in the final in his keenness to get a good start he false started and was DQ'd.

Suraya Frost (IG 80mH) suffered a false start and despite starting her heat well faded over the 2nd half.  Montana Dennis (IB 100mH) finished 4th in his heat to qualify as a fastest runner up with new non wind assisted PB of 13.96s.  Malakai was not quite as lucky and finished 6th.   In the final Montana finished 8th but going into the competition ranked UK No 32 that was a great result.

Sam Brown, unfortunately had been ill in the week and despite finishing 3rd in his IB 400m heat missed out on qualifying for the final.  In her first championships Rosa Cormacain ran a composed race in the JG 1500m despite a large field of 14 runners.  Sticking to the leading group she just wasn't able to kick for the finish but 5th place and a new 1.5s PB improvig her current club record in the process to 4:45.47 was a great performance and is the fastest recorded by a Heathside woman so far this season.

Sam Turner had only run 3 Steeplechases before lining up on the line of the IB 1500mSC with 15 others.  In what proved to be a physical race with plenty of pushing he finished 11th improving his PB by 0.6s.

Elkie Baker was our only entry in the field events and had also moved up from junior girls where she won bronze last year so was competing against girls a year older.  Her first throw of 38.57m was a new PB and put pressure on the rest of the field with only 3 having thrown further.  Gabriella Tcheukam (Croydon/London) ultimately took gold with a massive PB of 45.08m which was U18 European Championships Qualfying standard but Elkie finished in 2nd which also means she will represent England at the SIAB International at Carmarthen next week.

Trey, Montana and Malakai had a second chance of winning medals as all three took part in the 4x100m relays.  Montana and Malakai were part of the Inter Boy London team who were upgraded to bronze when Surrey were disqualified, and Trey ran the third leg in the Middlesex Senior Boys team which finished 2nd behind Essex.

Well done to all the young athletes who hopefully enjoyed the experience taking part in such an amazing festival of Athletics.”
