2023 Annual Review - Part 2
We continue our review of the year with medalists at European Masters and National Championships. The autumn brought another successful Middlesex Road relays followed by the Senior Men winning the London XC title.
July 2023
The 92nd English Schools Championship saw 9 of our young athletes competed for either Middlesex or London. Trey Corlis (IB 100mH) won silver with Elkie Baker (JG Discus) and Malakai (JB 80mH) both taking home Bronze medals. Suraya Frost (JG 75mH) equalled her club record finishing 5th in her final. Sam Brown (IB 400m, Magdeline Paitoo (IG 300m) and Imani Quamina (IG 80mH) all set new club records. Dylan Mills (JB 800m), and Montana Dennis (IB 100mH) also competed.
Matthew Rallinson, Thomas Archer, Marcel Baczek and Lily Woolcock all competed for Middlesex in the South of England Inter-Counties.
Peter Gould was 1st in the Chiltern Ridge Half Marathon.
At the Sri Chimnoy Dashing Deer 5km James Hurrell was 2nd.
Cian O’Donnell competed in both the 100m and 200m at the UK Championships in Manchester.
The Club finished 5th in the 3rd SAL of the season held in Dartford.
Andy Barnes was first in the QE Olympic Park 10k in Stratford.
The Club held it’s annual Handicap race in Highgate Woods with Pip Dew and David Macnamara the respective winners.
Trey Corlis represented English Schools in the SIAB International meeting finishing 2nd in the 100mH.
Dylan Mills (U15B) 4:50.84, George Saint (U17M) 4:41.39, Abel Woldegiorgis (U20M) and Seyfu Jamaal (SM) 4:09.59 all set new Club Mile records at Barnet’s Golden Mile.
Helena Stone ran a 100m PB of 20.21 at Lee Valley to be ranked UK No1 in her Parathelete Class.
The Young Athletes finished 2nd in the last MYAL of the season t a rain drenched StoneX Stadium. This confirmed an overall 2nd place finish for the season behind winners Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers. Gabriel Edwards set a new U13B LJ League record of 5.11m to add to his 75mH League best earlier in the season..
Seyfu broke the Club 5000m road record with 14:14 at the Sri Chinmoy race at Battersea Park. Rebecca Bunting was the first woman home.
The Club hosted the Finsbury Park 5ks with Rebecca Piggott fastest woman, the nights climax was Seyfu breaking the club and track 5000m record with 14:11.79.
Rory Willis and Gabriel Edwards represented Middlesex at the Derek Crookes U13 Inter Counties meeting.
Martin Potter was 13th in the Middlesex Triathlon at Merchant Taylors School
August
Seyfu added the club 10,000m record to his achievements this summer running 29:13 in the Sri Chinmoy 10k in Battersea Park.
Matthew Rallison was 2nd in the Sri Chinmoy Kangaroo Hop 5k also in Battersea Park.
Despite bad weather Filipe Cardoso completed the North Downs Way 100
The Club’s Young Athletes excelled at the South of England Championships held at Lee Valley. Gabriel Edwards set a new Championship Best winning the gold in the U13 75mH with a time of 11.69s. Elkie Baker won Gold in the U15G Discus with a new PB and club record of 37.16m. Trey Corlis won silver in the U17M 100mH. Suraya Frost (U15G 75mH), Mikel Alexander (U15B 300m), Dylan Mills (JB 800m) Imani Quamina (U17W 80mH), Issy Watkins (U17W 1500m) and Montana Dennis (U17M 100mH) made their finals,
Sadly injury struck Cian O’Donnell while competing at the Scottish Championships and he was unable to progress beyond the 100m semi-final.
The final Vets League meeting saw the men finish 2nd in the league only 5 match points behind winners Ilford.
The final SAL meeting saw a return to form with the club finishing 2nd to finish 9th overall in the league.
The England Athletics U15/U17 Championships, took place over two days at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Trey Corlis was 6th in the U17M final while in the U15G Discus Elkie Baker won a silver medal.
September
Seyfu set a new club half marathon record of 1:03:34 at the Big Half. He then went on to break his Club 5000m record at Battersea with 13:58.51.
Malia Anderson-Watson broke the club U15G Shot Putt record with 8.97m at Southend.
Noelle O’Regan won 400m Gold at the British Masters Championships in Derby.
14 Heathsiders took part in the Hampstead Pondathon.
The Middlesex Young Road Relays, which had several races shortened in distance due to the hot weather, saw team golds for both U15 teams, silver for the U13 Boys and bronze for the U17 Men. There were individual medals for Amy Kirk (U15G), Rory Willis (U13B), Dylan Mills (U15B), George Saint (U17M) and Milly Watkins (U17W).
The Club helped host the Veterans AC Track and Field Championships at Finsbury Park.
Representing Middlesex at the Southern Inter-counties in Oxford Elkie Baker was 1st in the U15G Discus, Suraya Frost 3rd in the U15G 75mH, as was Malakai in the U15B 80mH. Thomas Wassermann (U17M) competed in 100mH, Hammer and Shot Putt.
Rebecca Bunting set a new Club Half Marathon record of 1:17:32 in Copenhagen.
Malakai set a new Club Pentathlon record of 2280 pts in the ESAA Combined Events Championships in Bedford.
The Club held the 2nd part of the Club Championships at a soggy Finsbury Park.
Five Heathsiders went under 2:30 at the Berlin Marathon with Seyfu in his debut Marathon recording 2:19:39.
Jonathan Hiling and Julia Kelk were the club’s first man and woman home in the Vitality 10,000m. Valentin Valeanu broke the club V45 record in the Mile race.
The U15 Girls and U17 Women finished 15th in the Southern Road Relays in Aldershot, The Senior Women were 35th and Senior Men 26th.
Gareth Creagh was 8th in the Ealing Half Marathon
Adrian Day won gold in the V65 mixed 4x400m team and the mens V60 team as well as a bronze as part of the GB V65 400m relay team at the European Masters Championships in Pescara.
Mathew Rallinson won the Middlesex 10km in Victoria Park with Chiara Borg 3rd women, The Men retained their team title with the women 2nd.
Sam Turner won the U15B race and Rory Willis (U13B), Ishanna Channell (U17W) were both 2nd at the first NWLL at Berkeley Fields, Greenford.
October
The Senior Women won the first Met League of the season at Claybury with Rebecca Piggott 2nd. The Senior Men were 3rd with Joseph Young the first runner home in 10th. The Junior Women won their race.
Seyfu Jamaal set a new Club 10 mile record of 48:25 at the Great South Run.
Gareth Creagh was 28th at the Cabbage Patch 10km
The Senior Men (Wooldridge, de Cothi, Sevestre, Owen) were 6th in the South of England XC Relays at Wormwood Scrubs with the Senior Women (Piggott, Woolcock, Male) 7th. |n the Junior races the U20 Men were 7th and U17 Women 8th.
Karina Kaufmann became British V40 Duathalon Champion with a time of 2:19:43 at Grafham Water.
The Club received the news that former Club Chairman Charles Verrall had passed away.
November
James Hurrell won the Ealing Mile
Seyfu retained his Liddiard Trophy title at Fryent Park.
Sam Turner (U15B) won the 2nd NWLL race of the season. The U15 Girls were the 1st team
The 2nd Met League at Wormwood Scrubs saw the Senior Men finish 3rd while the Women finished a close 4th.
Deng Akoi was 3rd at the Mornington Chasers Regents Park 10km.
At Parliament Hill the Senior Men (Jamaal, Seyed, Gurney, Sevestre) won the London XC Championships with Seyfu 2nd in the individual race. Tom Aldred was first vet. The Senior Women (Prior, Hawkshaw, Woolcock, Borg) were 4th.
Jessica Prior and Seyfu both won the Sorority and Fraternity Cups at Trent Park. with the senior men 2nd in the team standings.
In the NWLL at Trent Park Rory Willis won the U13B race.
December
Both the men and women finished 3rd at the Met League in Uxbridge with Rebecca Piggott 2nd woman and Seyfu 4th in the Mens race. Rory Willis followed up his NWLL with a win in the U13 Boys while the Junior Women were again the 1st team.
The current Met League Positions at the end of the year after 3 races are Senior Women 2nd (21 pts behind VPH&TH), Senior Men 3rd, Vet Men 2nd, Vet Women 5th, Junior Men 4th, Junior Women 1st, U13 Boys 3rd, U13 Girls 16th, U11 Boys 8th and U11 Girls 3rd. In the Howard Williams Trophy the Seniors are 2nd (2 pts behind VPH&TH) and Juniors 4th (1pt behind VPH&TH).
The Indoor Athletics season started again with 4 new club records set at the first meeting at Lee Valley; Sam Brown (U17M 400m), Trey Corlis (U20m 60mH), Ivy Paitoo (U15G SP) and Israel Nworgu (V35 60mH)
James Hurrell was 3rd in the British Masters 5k Championships in Battersea.
Jo Irwin finished 7th (AG50-54) in the Hyrox competition at the Excell Centre qualifying for the 2024 World Championships.
Tom Aldred was 2nd in the Milton Keynes Marathon.
