Aquathlons, duathlons, mountain marathons and final SAL fixture
This first weekend in September was an extremely busy one for many Heathsiders, with the last Southern Athletics League meeting, local aquathlons and duathlons, and marathons in the French Alps to name a few. The big event of the weekend was clearly the final fixture for the SAL 2012, which was held in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, where we racked up the club's biggest points total of any SAL fixture this summer, and ended up coming 8th overall in the season which means we have been promoted to Division 2 status for 2013.
Dan Findlay-Robinson and Jayne Sales won the French OMM Raid, Court class (mountain marathon), a 2 day mountain marathon in the Alps. They took part in the short score class, 4 1/2 hrs time limit each day to cover as much ground as possible, and won with a total of 600 points - around 100 more than 2nd place (full results are still to come). Elspeth Storrar had a fantastic run in the Kent Coastal Half marathon, coming 2nd woman. Gabi, Alison, Rick and Adrian enjoyed the first Haringey Aquathlon, which was a huge success and more, similar events are promised, and some intrepid Heathsiders (Gavin, Caroline, Emma, Julie and Jim, and I think there was another Heathsider although it's not obvious from the results) took part in the Hampstead Heath duathlon - a race involving swimming round all the ponds and the Lido on the Heath, and running between them. The Parkruns were also well attended, with excellent runs from Rob coming first at Ally Pally in 19.09 and Luke first at the Hampstead race in 18:08.
The final Southern Athletics League meeting warrants some closer inspection, thanks to Sue Rust and John Flahive both writing pretty full reports, which I have attempted to combine as follows:
27 Heathsiders ranging from U17 to V60 took part through the day. Our men produced a great turnout to outnumber the ladies by more than two to one, meaning they had the luxury of non-scorers in several events, but with Adrian having too much time on his hands there was no hiding for the women, who under his gentle yet firm guidance were coaxed into covering more events than initially planned. In the end the women earned just eight points (81) less than the men (89) to make for a fairly even split. After a season's best in the 800m Sue ended up having a great day multi-eventing thanks very much to the aforementioned coaxing by Adrian, without which she for example never would have made her 100m hurdles comeback. Katherine also had an epic day, including taking on the triple jump that Sue turned down but also getting quality results in the 3000m and 1500m. Tina and Isabel got stuck in on their SAL debuts, both of them stepping up to race far beyond their normal distance in the 4x400m relay, with Tina having already done the 100m relay after scoring in five individual events. This included throwing a stunningly slick 18 plus meters in her first ever hammer competition. Rising U17 star Xelia won the javelin A string with a PB, and Angelica the B string, while Djanira cruised over the sprint hurdles to finish (joint?) first. Eldiana was only intending to spectate, but eventually gave in and did the long jump.
On the men's side Nathan as ever did several events more than competently, for example winning the triple jump, with Richard also very busy on the day, including running the 800m a couple ten-hundredths of a second faster than ever before 2.04.3 to add to his collections of PBs this season. Will and Dan also ran PBs, in the 400m and 1500m, respectively. Israel creamed the opposition in both hurdle races, Jacob easily won the long jump, and Kaz achieved a club record with a 53.38 javelin throw. Tom featured in probably the highest quality competition of the day, described as follows by Chris: "a real race at the sharp end of the 5,000m and 0.4s away from breaking 15 minutes. It's never nice to be lapped during a race, but when it gives you the chance to see a battle royal like that unfolding, it's almost worth it. But not quite."
There are so many people who made enormous contributions on Saturday and during the season, but top of the list would be Nathan Cyrus and Sue Rust who attended every fixture and covered at least 6 events every time to a high standard, as well as mentoring and encouraging many of the other athletes. And last but no way least, a thank you to Kabir and John for all the behind-the-scenes work organising the teams, and to Rob and Jerry for their help on Saturday. These track & field fixtures are quite complicated days out from an organisational point of view, but thanks to the aforementioned individuals' efforts we were able to pull off a fine day's work.
Apologies for any results which have been missed out. Full summary of results we have received below:
