Bank holiday weekend: Canterbury Half, Thames Turbo Sprint triathlon and Last Friday of the Month 5k and the LICC

The bank holiday weekend was pretty quiet race-wise, but I think it was quality over quantity in this case, with first places achieved in the The Last Friday of the Month 5k in Hyde Park, and two Parkruns, and in numerous races in the LICC, and some very impressive run/cycle/swim efforts in the Thames Turbo Series sprint triathlon, an excellent 3k swim and a satisfied customer in the Canterbury Half.

The Last Friday of the month 5k in Hyde Park became the Second to last Friday of the month 5k, with a win for Olivier Le Polain coming in first in an amazing time of 15.43.

Twentythree parkrunners were out pounding the various parks from locations as diverse as Hackney to  Malahide! Of note, Rob Shulman came in first at Ally Pally in 20.33, and Tom Aldred was first at Highbury Fields in 16.03, and there were 2nd places for Adam Kirk-Smith at Finsbury Park in 16.58 and Alex Weatherill at Hackney Marshes in 17.41.

The London Inter-Club Challenge (LICC) took place on Saturday despite torrential rain, with many excellent performances, too numerous to mention them all, but with Gregory Ducat coming 1st in his 100m race and Henry Damon coming 1st in his 100m race and the high jump, Anne-Christine Scherer coming ist in her Shot put event, Yohanes Asefa Teshom first in the Discus and Darnell Plummer and Zelia Mendes-Jones first in their respective Javelin events. Full results for everyone at the LICC on Saturday below.

Four Heathsiders all had impressive races in the Thames Turbo Series sprint triathlon in Hampton led home by Dave Walton obviously well on the way to making a welcome return to racing. Gavin tells it from the rockface:
Four Heathsiders got up at 4am on bank holiday Monday to head for Hampton to take part in the Thames Turbo Series sprint triathlon. It was a perfect day for triathloning, which was a fine thing because there was a swimming pool swim, which meant going off every 15 seconds. Gavin Evans, having put in the wrong estimated swim time, ended up waiting until 9am before starting.

“Dave Walton, who is on the early stages to a very promising comeback to regular racing, was the first Heathsider home, completing the slightly odd course (426m swim, 21km cycle, 5k off-road run) in 1:10:55, making him the third V50-54. Sarah Swinhoe was next, coming first in the V40-44 age group in only her second-ever tri – 1:12:26 and Ruth Miller, warming up for the World Championships, was the third Heathsider and the first V55-59 – 1:15.02, followed by Gavin Evans (1:16:20).”

Oliver Pound ran in the Canterbury half marathon and had this to say "It's I think a fairly tough course, and as my first ever half, I've no idea if that makes it a good choice or not.Anyway, the course is beautiful - beautiful scenery, and it takes place on very quiet roads. I probably saw 5 cars during the whole run, all of whom were very gracious and gave us plenty of room. The first 10k is mostly uphill, never steep - just a long slow burner. after that, you get a bit of a breather, with a good few k on flats, and gently downhill - until at 17k you hit an absolute killer of a hill. It's steep, and about 1km long. I didn't see a single other person running up that one, so I kept running (albeit only a fraction faster than those walking). I got round in 2hrs and 56 seconds. which is exactly 56 seconds longer than I would have liked! "
Claire Sliwerski swam in the Marlow Open Water series on Sunday and did well in the 3k distance, coming in 113th in a time of 1.09.42 seconds.

Some late  results slipped through the net, from earlier in the month: in the Civil Service T&F championships at Manchester on Wednesday 14th August, Tony Killilea came first in the 2000m steeplechase and 8th with a PB in the 5000m, and in the Grimsthorpe Half on 4th August Tony came third. As he said “This was a trail race on an undulating, windy (and windy) course in South Lincs. Lovely event if you’re not bothered about a PB- not as grim as the name suggests”. Also in the Henfield Half Marathon (off road) on 18 August Bob Gould came 151st in 1.56:42.
