Berlin Marathon, Ealing Half, Hever and New Forest Triathlons, NW London Young XC Athletes League
The weather was perfect for racing on this beautiful end-of-summer weekend, cool but sunny, favouring the triathletes by raising the temperature a little. Races were varied as usual, ranging from a 5k, a 10k, a couple of half marathons, a full marathon, a couple of triathlons and an aquathlon, along with track, and the NW London Young Athletes XC League and of course some parkruns! Something for everyone.
City v Wharf 5K, Victoria Park, London
Tammela was delighted to run a PB in the City v Wharf 5k last Wednesday evening – and sent in this short report: “A rare opportunity to run a timed 5k that isn't a parkrun presented itself in the form of the City v Wharf race in Victoria Park last Wednesday evening 23rd Sept. The race was set up as a corporate challenge of sorts, pitting runners from companies in the City of London against those from companies in Canary Wharf. Even though we don't really work in the Wharf, four of my co-workers and I decided to run representing our little charity. It was a perfect evening to race: cool and partly sunny. I had a PB potentially in my sights and decided to pace it like the pros, with a fast first and last kilometer and a relaxed middle three. Although my third kilometer dipped a bit too far down in pace, I still managed a PB by 6 seconds! I ran 21:12 -- my fastest time since 2012 -- and was 13th woman. The race atmosphere was great, with about 800 runners of all speeds and a snazzy "City" or "Wharf" sweatband for the entry fee. I'd recommend it if anyone wants a flat, non-parkrun 5k to test his/her fitness. “
North West London Young Athletes XC League race 1. Perivale, London
Ruth and Russell took a group of Young Athletes over to Perivale for the first XC of the season. Russell reported back: "The young athletes got Heathside’s cross country season underway at a very warm and sunny Ealing. Conditions were good under foot although all the recent rain made it slippery in places. Several of the familiar names ran well and were joined by numerous athletes making their debuts. The under 11 Girls started the day with a solid team performance with all 4 runners separated by only 10 seconds which should lead to some close finishes during the season. Rose and Arthur then produced excellent top ten performance with Rose supported byMatilda and Katie (both having their debut runs) combining for 4th team. Ruairi once again produced the youngster best run of the day finishing 5th despite arriving in the car park 30 seconds before the start of his race. However in the senior race to commemorate 50 years of the league, coaches Ruth and Russell showed they can still compete, with Ruth collecting the silver medal in the women’s race. A good day was had byall and now we look forward to the first Met league."
Clapham Common 10K
Two Heathsiders took part in this 10K Phil Hogg and Andy Barnes, with Andy leading the pair home coming in 2nd place overall!
Ealing Half Marathon
Twelve Heathsiders ran in the Ealing Half, led home by Dan Madams who achieved a very speedy time of 1.18. Celine Murray was our first Lady home in a very nifty 1.25 (5th in age).
Windsor Half Marathon
Two Heathsiders took part in this popular race, Henry Hamilton and Frances Powrie. Henry's report sounds like an advertisers dream for the race: "I was one of 4000 runners at Windsor Great Park last Sunday. The beauty of the park and the buzz of the crowd took my mind off the challenging hills around this 2 lap course. It features a unique ending in which you can see the finish line from a mile out with Windsor Castle providing a stunning backdrop as you run back down the tree-lined hill it's no wonder this sells out months in advance! I'll definitely be back!".
Berlin Marathon
Three Heathsiders headed over to the fast flat marathon course in Berlin, and were led home by Simon Hazel in 3.37 (a pretty good time considering Simon has had 6 months of Achilles injury, only 4 weeks back running and a longest run of 10 miles a week before the race). Special mention here too to our very own Jerry Odlin junior (otherwise known as Nick Odlin) who ran his first marathon here on Sunday in a very respectable time of 3.13.14 – obviously taking after his dad!
Watford Track Open, Watford
At the Watford Track mid-week, a small group competed, and Pete summed the evening up succintly "More PBs for bright new young star Adam, and a hard-worked one for Richard". Full results can be seen below.
Hever Castle Triathlons
Hever Castle Triathlons were spread out over the two days of the weekend, with a wide selection of races for all ages. In the Super sprint that took place on Saturday (800m swim, 40K cycle, 8k run) Jackie, Howard, Martin and Alison took part. Martin came in 4th (1st MV40), closely followed by Howard 9th (3rd V40) and Jackie was 1st FV50). Alison unfortunately lost her chip in the swim, but the organisers were able to work out her exact finish time and her split times are a bit approximate, but despite this she had nothing but good things to say about the race and thoroughly enjoyed this, her third triathlon.
On Sunday Gabi and Hannah entered the Olympic distance (Swim 1500m, cycle 40km, 10km trail run), Gabi came in 11th V40 out of 47 in a time of 3.05. Hannah unfortunately had a flat tyre to contend with, and a 30 minute delay, so she did amazingly to achieve a time of 3.10.48. Gabi commented: ” The water was a fresh 14 degrees but it was perfect race conditions with sunshine aplenty. The car park was a bit muddy but there was a tractor on hand to pull us out at the end!”.
New Forest Triathlon
Elinor headed off to the New Forest, and took part in the Middle Distance Triathlon (Swim 1.9k,Cycle 90k, Run 21K) coming in a brilliant 9th Woman and first in age. She said:” Run was off road for 14 miles of hills, hills, hills but apart from the wind on the bike, a beautiful course with fantastic scenery and just the ponies / cows and horses to dodge!!
Willesden Aquathlon (400m swim, 5k run)
A late result comes from Susan Eedle who did very well in the Willesden Aquathlon (which took place on 20th September) coming in third woman – she had this to say about the event: “just to add variety to the race report, I did a very niche aquathlon at Willesden on Sunday 20/9 and came third female, 8th overall (out of a fairly tiny field of 12) even without my great age being taken into account. Well pleased with 37.05 (400m swim + 5k run). A beautiful day and a lovely event, run concurrently with a triathlon (just add 10.5k bike in the middle), with ridiculous quantities of cake provided afterwards”.
Parkruns
A slightly smaller than usual scattering of parkruns and congratulations to Leigh (1st Lady at Finsbury Park) and Stuart Meiklejohn (1st overall at Oak Hill).
