Results round-up
The Heathside net was spread far and wide this weekend, not only geographically (with members taking part in events in Estonia, Hull, Bristol, Cornwall, Essex, Herts, and the big GNR up in Newcastle), but also in type, as Heathsiders competed in Road Running, Multi-discipline, Parkruns, and Track & Field events (with Ruth Miller ensuring the youngsters were ferried to Hayes in West London for a big meet there). While closer to home, 11 took part in the Duathlon on Hampstead Heath, braving the chilly waters of the Mens’ and Womens’ ponds!
So, to give them some order I have divided this week’s results into 4 separate sections, one for each type of event. Where available, Chip Times and positions are given.
SECTION 1: RUNNING
Late Entry: 13th Marcialonga Running 25.7km (Italy, Sunday 6th September)
Greg Bell writes: “1200m up in the Italian Dolomites, saw a chilly start (the thermometer at my hotel in Moena showed 6oC at 8am!). However, at least the sun was shining – a big difference to the previous day when it had rained for most of the day and into late evening too, so very lucky that all the dark clouds had cleared away! The 25.7km route from Moena to Cavalese gradually drops down to around 800m by the Half-marathon point (21km), so the temperature picked up to around 15oC once we got below the “snow-line” and out of the shadows of the mountains. The last 4-5km include a nasty sting of a steep uphill section, which I’ve always had to walk before picking up jogging pace again. My time of 2h32m included 5mins of stopping to take photos (of each km marker!). But even at 2h27m (by my GPS Garmin) it was still my slowest time in 4 attempts…”
1124th Greg Bell 2:32:49
1379 finishers
Bristol Half-Marathon (Sunday 13th September)
Rebecca Taylor writes: “Four Heathsiders went out west this weekend for the Bristol Half Marathon. Conditions were ideal: cool and clear on the mostly flat course. Mark George was the first Heathsider over the line, followed a few minutes later by Thomas Barnett. John Mullee came next with Rebecca Taylor a few minutes later. Mark was satisfied with his time, while Rebecca was very pleased with hers, which was a new PB as she had never run under 2 hours before!”
808th Mark George 01:35:40
1037th Thomas Barnett 01:38:05
3048th John Mullee 01:53:37
3463th Rebecca Taylor 01:56:34 (PB)
7215 Finishers
Great North Run (Newcastle, Sunday 13th September)
Jim Connell writes: “A beautiful sunny morning in the Northeast made for an enjoyable race with fantastic atmosphere and spectator support. My 10th GNR, I know the course well. I started just behind Mo and got a bit excited with the pace through the first couple of miles. Managed to rein it in but it took a few more miles to settle. It was warmer than expected, I ran with my shirt off from 3 miles until 200 metres to go. Keeping cool was the focus, the undulations took me by suprise this time, I didn't remember there being so many! Managed to save some energy for the difficult section through 10-12 and passed plenty on the coast to dip under 85mins. Good prep for my October marathon.”
Laura Boothman writes: “Possibly the best, and definitely the biggest, Half in the world!”
Henry Gould writes: “It was hot & hilly, but the atmosphere & support was as good as any I've ever seen to cheer on over 57,000 runners. I pushed myself from Newcastle to South Shields, finishing just 33 minutes behind another British record set by Mo!”
324th James Connell 01:24:45
669th Claire Jellema 01:28:53
1154th Henry Gould 01:32:51
1314th Tom Pratt 01:33:43

SECTION 2: MULTI-DISCIPLINE
Hampstead Duathlon (Sunday 13th September)
Gavin Evans writes: “Six Heathside men and five Heathside women braved the cold to swim, run and shiver their way through the Hampstead Duathlon (which is actually an Aquathlon). For some unknown reason the organisers chose to hold this event two weeks later than usual, by which time the water thermometer had fallen to 15C – luke-warm for all-year swimmers, but a bit too nippy for non-swimmers (I still had chattering teeth after a long hot shower and a nice cuppa!). Several Heathsiders decided it was too cold before the event, which was wise.
This ‘duathlon’ is an event that definitely favours swimmers. It starts with three lengths of the 60m Hampstead pool, followed by a canter to the men’s pond (about 400m around), then a sprint to the women’s pond (about 300m), then about a kilometre to the mixed pond (about 220m) and then a charge to the running track. Our first men in were our pair of hot Italians: Marco Luna, in 6th place (out of 160 overall and 97 men) and Sergio di Noto, in 8th place. Our first women were Louise le Ray, making a splendid comeback to this event in 11th place (out of 63 women finishers), followed by Sarah Swinhoe in 15th place.
The gutsiest performance came from our Briony Fane, who, with a back brace, managed to run downhill, and walk uphill – and still managed to beat 21 others who, presumably, ran the whole way! Briony, a committed winter swimmer, thought the water was positively balmy…
It was also good to see Elspeth Storrar back in action – our third woman in 22nd place.
The first Heathside team home was ‘The Casual Cruisers’ (Marco, Howard Gold and ‘Sue Rust’ – otherwise known as Dave Walton). They came 7th out of 29 teams.
Marco Luna 36:12 (6th man)
Sergio do Noto 36:59 (8th man)
Rick Hewett 38:45 (22nd man)
Howard Gold 39:18 (27th man)
Louise le Ray 41:22 (11th woman)
Sarah Swinhoe 42:15 (15th woman)
Dave Walton 44:03 (21st woman!)
Gavin Evans 44:03 (53rd man)
Elspeth Storrar 44:09 (22nd woman)
Ruth Miller 45:50 (25th woman)
Briony Fane 54:17 (42nd woman)

SECTION 3. TRACK & FIELD
1. Adult Open Meetings. Jacob Howe writes: “On the track there was the Highgate/Parliament Hill Open on Wednesday 9th. Highlight performances were Andrew's 2nd place in the 5000m, missing a PB by a fraction of a second, whilst James ran a fantastic time in his first serious 5000m. Prior to this Jimmy ran a cracking 100m to win and dip under 11secs.
Also on the 9th was Watford, with PBs from Ben and Allan. Then on the next day new second- claimer Adrian ran a strong 5000m at the Kent AC club champs.”

2. Middlesex Young Athletes Road Relays (Hayes, Sunday 13th September)
Ruth Miller writes: “Having just about warmed up after doing the Heath Duathlon on Sunday morning, I set off the Middlesex YA road relays in Uxbridge, with a car full of 10 and 11 year olds. Your worst nightmare? Not mine! These kids are KEEN. What was a road relay? they wanted to know. Would they carry a baton? Would they need spikes? When should they eat their lunch? How far was 3000m? Should they sprint all the way? (we figured it was about 2 x the Crouch End fun run, so maybe they should leave the sprint til near the end!). In the event they all gave their all…and then ran backwards round the course to cheer on their team mates. They had great fun.
However it is often a real struggle to get them (or their parents) to races. So this got me thinking about how as young athlete coaches we need to get the kids more involved in thinking about and planning their races as a team. Maybe Junior Team Captains who can help create a bit of a buzz around key competitions would help (just like it has with the Seniors). Although some parents are keen and supportive, this should not determine whether the kids compete. They have to want to come - and we have to facilitate that. So if you want to be a junior team captain or a team captain’s assistant, then let me know. (Results are below, with some solid ‘first race of the season’ or ‘first big race ever’ performances)”
