BMAF South of England indoor champs, Brighton Half
Away from the Sunday league cross-country and usual parkruns some of our vets took part in the BMAF South of England indoor championships on Sunday, clocking age-group winning times and PBs, while Clare, who appears to be our sole runner in the Brighton half, put down a good, sub-90min marker.
In the British Masters Athletics Federation (BMAF) South of England indoor championships Adrian continued his recent good indoor form to win the M60 60m title, while Tony came home happy after knocking a big chunk off his outdoor 3000m PB in his indoor debut in the distance. Adrian’s success in the 60m comes after he won pentathlon gold in the his age group at the BMAF British Indoor Championships in Sheffield on 5 February. For the benefit of those of you who haven’t yet seen his post in the forum, here a must-read summary of his victory:
> On Sunday 5th February Adrian Essex won the Gold Medal in the British Masters Athletics Federation Silly Old Buggers 60- 64 age group Pentathlon at the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield. Doing moderately well in the actual sporting events (60m Hurdles 12.24 seconds, Long Jump 4.28 metres, Shot Put 8.41 metres, High Jump 1.30 metres, 1000m 3min 48.32 seconds for a nearly respectable 2,795 points) Adrian excelled in the off the track disciplines especially "Choosing to Travel before the Snow Started", "Not Having Another Drink whilst Watching the Rugby in Yates's" and "Actually Completing all the Events". Adrian's ultimate goal is to win the British over 80s 100 metres in 2031. Adrian commented "I may have peaked too soon but at least I have youth on my side". <
It has been pointed out to me that Adrian’s 60m time (8.59s) equates to an exceptional 90.62% on the age graded scale. He made a day of it to also run well in the 200m and race the 60mH, while Tony was very pleased with his run, a big PB after a 10:16 clocking at a Watford open meet during the summer. Michael Bense was another Heathside competing at the BMAF event and scooping some age category wins, while Clare (Miller) seemed to be the only Heathsider running the Brighton Half, at least according to the results I found, and posted a sub-90min time on what I’m told is limited endurance training, or perhaps limited training overall, so very impressive. Leigh was off in Wales racing her first of back-to-back National Cross-Country Champs, coming in a solid 16th.
