Bronze at the National XC, Peak District Challenge and Swim/Run

This week is dominated by the re-arranged English National Cross Country Championships with Charlie Nicolson winning a bronze medal in the U13Boys race and the U17W finishing 4th. Elsewhere there was Masters athletics, Filipe Cardoso taking part in the 100km Peak District Challenge and Hannah Yip taking part of the Serpentine Swim/Run. The Club also held the 2nd part of the Club Championships on a rainy evening at Finsbury Park

ECCA National Cross Country Championships 14,9,2024

After being cancelled in February sue to water-logged car parks the National Cross Country took place on a glorious sunny early autumn day. The course was set over beautifully prepared parkland. It was a pity that the numbers of runners was substantially down on a normal race.

The Club’s Young Athletes however eagerly took up the opportunity not least as age groups were the same as last winter. The U17’s kicked the event off with Issy Watkins leading the charge finishing 32nd with sister Millie 23s later. Amaya Shankardass and Ishaana Cannell completed the team which finished 4th just outside the medals. Sam Turner, continued his strong form from the steeplechase and was the first U15B home in 45th place. Tam Mergia was 30s behind and Dylan Mills and Ennio Kaloukian completed the team scorers that finished 15th.

Our largest representation was in the U15 Girls with 10 runners. Amy Kirk in 33rd and Kiara Corkin 50th gave rthe team a strong platform with Margot Hunt and Lila Blustin completing the team which finsihed in 7th place. Most of the girls will still be U15 in February when the race returns to Parliament Hill.

The U13 Boys race saw Charlie Nicolson who had recently improved his 800m PB by 3s finding himself in a group of 4 contesting 3rd place. With around 1km to go he moved to the front of the group and opened a gap which he was able to hold until the finishing line winning a Bronze medal. Rory Willis finsihed 40s later in 29th and James McGuire 45th with Nathan Grela-Bekele completing the team which finshed in 4th.

Unfortunately we had only 3 U17 Men with George Saint producing a great run to finish 24th, David Baah Okyere was 94th with Artie Feeny-Willings also running.

There was some Senior representation Mihaly Zoltan Jeles and Alfonso Estepa Palacios both took part in the Senior Mens race while the Senior Womens team of Genevieve Weston, Molly Harrison, Lucy Daly and Kimberli Butler secured 18th place in the team competion.

Many thanks to team manager Ruth Miller, parents and athletes who produced such a great set of results.

100km, Peak District Challenge, Derbyshire, 13.9.24

Filipe Cardoso reports on the 100km Peak District Challenge:-

Last Friday at around 9pm I set off from the village of Hathersage, to complete the 100km Peak District Challenge circular route with 3,000m of elevation. in the Northern Midlands

This is an unmarked trail course, requiring navigation, with feeding stations along the way. It is a very low-key event which adds to its appeal.

Having previously completed ultras in the hills and canals of Southern England, I felt confident in completing it around lunchtime Saturday. I obviously had not considered on how steep, rocky and treacherous some of the trails are in the mountains, as well as my basic navigation skills.

The weather stayed dry throughout the 21 hours it took me to get back and the views were breathtaking.

The 100km race was won by Javier Monllor who completed in 13 hours.

There were also 3 other races running during the weekend: 25km, 50km and 75km.

Serpentine Swim/Run, Hyde Park, 14.9.24

Race report for Swim Serpentine (14 September) below:

Some 6,000 people took part in Swim Serpentine 2024, including the actress Juliet Stevenson. The water temperature was a fresh 15 degrees, but the sun helped us stay warm.

David and I were hoping to go for the Two Mile event when entries opened back in May, but it had sold out within half a day.

It was our debut swimming race. David exceeded his expectations by completing the race in less than 45 minutes. Thanks to Filipe Cardoso who lent me a tow float and warned me about the ducks and swans. They were the least of my issues. I ended up swimming a little too far out by 80m or so. I also walked in a rather leisurely manner towards the finish ramp, mistakenly believing the final barrier above the water to be the end of the race, as is the case with Olympic 10km swim races.
