Club champs part 1 and results

The weekend before last (April 30th), John Driscoll was in not-so-sunny and very windy NE Spain for the European Age Group Duathlon Championships, held in Soria. He reports: "I went out as part of the GB 45-49 team. It would be lovely to have a report ending on a high, but unfortunately, after what has been a patchy season, I went into the race having picked up a calf injury the previous weekend. At the start I initially hoped I'd get away with it until at least the final 5km run, but then, only 3km into the first 10km leg, the calf seized up and from then on it was just about trying to finish. The winds on the bike leg were as great as any we'd ever experienced and the cyclists were clocking 70-80kmph on the way back into town, with the final 5km run (or in my case: hobble) held through the more sheltered town square park. Although my time & place was less than I'd hoped for, these things happen - at least the weather brightened up for a final day's sightseeing in Madrid!"

Also from the previous weekend, Mark George and Tom Haworth were in Richmond for a swift Half... Mark reports: "this event takes place along the roads and towpaths of Richmond, Twickenham & Kingston, and incorporates large sections of the Cabbage Patch route. The small Heathside turnout is probably partly due to the challengeingly early 8.30 am start, but recommended all the same". Ella Waldman also ran and got an SB.

Up in Stratford (the one Upon-Avon), not Two but Four Gentlemen (??? -ed.) from Heahside: Ed Samuel, Rob Shulman, Henry Hamilton-Gould and Andrew Conway were running in the Shakespeare Marathon (with Andy running the Half). Ed writes: "We all lined up together on Sunday in beautiful Stratford-upon-Avon for the Shakespeare Half and full Marathon. The course was more challenging than I anticipated and rather lonely at times, but very scenic and well marshalled. The sun came out about an hour into the race which added to the challenge, but better than the strong winds of the day before. Having moved into 3rd place at mile 24, I thought I could cruise into the finish for a place on the podium but this was not to be the case as I was caught at mile 25. This resulted in the quickest mile split of the marathon and a burn up over the last 200m, whilst navigating around the half marathon back markers. Definitely not what you want after a tough undulating 26 miles! Nevertheless we finished with the same gun time, but I lost out on the chip time by 2 secs to finish 4th, but still pleased to take home a £20 M&S voucher for 1st V35.


Rob ran the marathon as a training run for Comrades and talked to his 'friendly' Highgate buddy the whole way round. Glad to report he didn't run to or from Stratford! A solid long run in the bank with 4 weeks of training left. Henry, with only a few weeks of recovery from Boston, grafted out his 26th 26-miler in increasingly warm temperatures. Everyone benefited from the free cup tea at the end!" Henry adds: "a beautiful course through rural Warwickshire. A bit hillier and warmer than I would have liked, but still a very enjoyable race and very well organised by the local Rotary club".

Closer to home, Carl Heap bagged first V60 spot in the 1st Sunday of the month regular 10km in Regents Park. Andrew Brooker shaved 30 secs off his previous 10km PB to nab second place in Sutton
