Crouch End 10K. Hackney Half, & Other races
With the SAL report to come later, the main event of this report was undoubtedly our local race, the Crouch End 10K. By all accounts it was a great success, the races went smoothly and the event was well marshalled with a large number of Heathsiders contributing to the volunteering effort.
Gavin Evans reports: We were treated to warm weather and magnificent Heathside marshalling, courtesy of Dave Robertson's team of Heathside volunteers. The heat meant that times were generally slower than normal although several Heathsiders managed PBs. This time, as far as I know, there were no casualties (although I managed a wardrobe malfunction along a crowded section of Park Avenue North).
It wasn't quite prizes for all, but, as usual, Heathsiders walked away with most of the honours. Our first man was Alex Collins, in second place in 35:35. He was followed by Andy Barnes in fourth place in 36:05 and William Griffiths in fifth place in 36:29. JackHardy put in an extremely promising debut to come 12th in 37:16. In all, 15 Heathsiders broke the 40-minute barrier.
Our first woman was Emily Reichert in third place in 43:34. Among the Heathsiders she was followed by Emelia Vynnychy, who was also the first female V40, in 43:46. Our third woman was Elizabeth Reed in 46:06.
There were several other prizes and top three places. The remarkably consistent Caroline White was the first female V60 in 47:44. Rick Baker was the first V70 in 55:40. I was the second V50 in 39:21. Nick Dodd was the second V60 in 45:23 followed three seconds later by Carl Heap in third place. Sue Eedle was the second V60 woman in 50:09.
Approximately 75 Heathsiders participated in the race (out of 1,006 finishers), results as follows

Crouch End Junior races, Priory Park, Crouch End
Simon Baker writes ;
“The children’s races follow the main 10k race at Crouch End with 1,430 enthusiastic young runners racing in the hot sunshine. The mile long route forms a circular loop through Priory Park, thankfully much of it in the shade. 15 junior Heathsiders took part with 1st places in the U12 girls race for Hattie Munday (her 3rd successive victory at this event) and Mia Manttan who was the 1st girl in the U16 race for the 2nd year. Jack Davis Black and Matilda Heath also secured podium places in the U16 race.”

Hackney Half Marathon 20/5/18
The official results do not list the club, making it difficult to pick out anyone from over 15,000 finishers, so there may well be others. There were plently of good times posted by Heathsiders, despite the warm conditions, none more so than from Andrew Hudson who ran in the colours of Hackney Winter Night Shelter, raising money for the charity that supports the homeless in Hackney, and reports that his time of 1 hour 38m 38 “ ..represented an age-adjusted personal best,( V60 ) and a bit over a minute outside my lifetime best. It was fairly cool to start with but hot for the last stretch in the Olympic Park... “
Catherine adds “...was a great day, the weather added to the challenge though! (chilly to begin with, the mist soon burnt off and it turned out to be a scorcher!)”, and Annabel was satisfied with her time given the conditions

ASICS Windermere Marathon, Ambleside 20/5/18
Sarah Illingworth participated in the tough sounding event and writes ;
“ A challenging marathon with lots of undulations however the fabulous scenery, and co-runner camaraderie kept me going. The marshals were plentiful, enthusiastic and rather witty. One managed to raise some ironic laughter at mile 3 with ‘you are doing really well ....not long to go now.’ Only 23.2 miles left thought I. “

Sutr Trail Race , Prague 19/5/18
Liam Hazelton ventured to the Czech republic to team up with former Heathsiders and Sunday League Cross Country regulars Jakub Kozel and Katerina Kozlova, who persuaded him to sign up for the to Trailpoint’s Šutr trail race in the forested hillsides surrounding Prague.
“ With the choice of 1-4 18km laps, Jakub and I originally opted for 3 (later changing to 2 thankfully!) and Kat for 1. Being a trail newbie I wasn’t prepared for what was to come. It was a warm sunny day but most of the route was thankfully under tree cover. But nothing prepared me for the sharp descents where just staying on your feet was a challenge and the huge steep climbs that forced slowing down to a walking pace, something very unnatural to a road runner. With 1000m of height gain/loss it was harder than any marathon I’ve done. However, the scenery was stunning and the result very satisfying - a 10th position out of around 80 runners in a time of3:21:28. Jakub took 18th place and Kat managed a sub two-hour time for her single lap. It was a small field (around 300 runners over the 4 races) with a great friendly local feel and yummy treats of chocolate, crisps, fruit and more on the way round to keep fuelled. Highly recommend!”
Nottingham Sprint Triathlon 19/5/18
( Swim 750m, Bike 20km, Run 5km )
Sarah Duke reports ;
“On Saturday I took part in the Nottingham Sprint Triathlon at the National Watersports Centre. As it was the final qualifier for this year’s Age Group European Championships in Glasgow there was a large and competitive field. This led to a ferocious swim where holding your line and keeping your head above water was all you could do! This was followed by 4 fast flat laps of the service road around the lake on the bike then an equally flat 5k run in the opposite direction. I was very happy with my time of 1:11:16, far better than I hoped and setting a new 5k PB in the process. I finished 8th in my age group and now just have to wait and see if I've qualified for Glasgow.”
best of luck !
