Epic Performances this Weekend!

73 Heathsiders (by my reckoning) ran in the 2016 YMCA Crouch End 10km. Before we get to the results, firstly a mightily BIG THANKS to all those of you who volunteered to marshall, and provided much appreciated vocal support along the way - with a special mention to Laura Boothman who, yeah, verily, brought down the mighty Walls of Jericho with her exuberant cheering and encouragement! And also to Chris Hartley and the 9am Run Crew who ran along beside us shouting out encouragement, before heading off to knock out a 20-miler!

Andrew Brooker clinched 1st place and Heathside Women won the team prize, with Celine MurrayAlice Hosking (1st & 2nd F’s respectively) and Satu Hietanen (3rd F40)taking the team honours - poor Eilidh Wagstaff put in a strong performance to finish ahead of Satu, but misses out on official glory & recognition, because as she explains: “I turned up too late to attach my chip and just decided to run with it in my hand - but it didn't register when I crossed the line!” Oh dear, I’m sure many of has have had similar mishaps - I remember turning up for it a few years ago, pleased as punch that I had 5 minutes to spare - only to realise I’d rushed out leaving the chip-containing envelope on the kitchen table, along with my mobile and post-race banana...d’oh!

Tammela Platt reports: “As usual, the race atmosphere was fantastic. It was fun to navigate the twists and turns of Crouch End’s neighbourhoods with over 1,000 other runners. There is always so much support along the course - lots of young people and families were outside to cheer on the runners. It was great to be recognized by many of the marshals (most of them being our fellow Heathside runners!). The highlights for me were: running across Ally Pally park — although there’s that sneaky, gradual uphill section partway along — and running past the house blaring out disco-hit “YMCA” just before the 5k mark!”

Julian Ferraro and Gavin Evans were 1st & 2nd M50s (24th & 32nd overall), Carl Heap 1st M60, Jackie Wastell 3rd F50 and the indomitable Lyn Evans (pictured above) clinching a 1st F60 and finally winning it "officially" after an administrative error denied her 3 years ago. Mark Anderson also deserves a mention as he must’ve been the 1st of the running-with-a-pushchair group!

Those of you on Facebook may already have seen the various photos posted by Ken Townson, Tom Hosking et.al. As for Tom’s photos of runners along the course (“https://www.facebook.com/TomHoskingPhotography/photos/a.1546528175656367.1073741836.1539603593015492/1546530518989466/?type=3” ) - are my eyes deceiving me? Because it looks like most Heathsiders are floating on air! We have The Force, people! Use your power wisely, my children, use it wisely...

Middlesex County Champs

Andrew Brooker and Adam Kirk-Smith were also both out at Lea Valley on Saturday taking part in the track events, with Adam winning both the 800m and 5000m, before heading off to Bognor Regis on Sunday where he sprinted to victory in the Bognor Prom 10km! Izaiah Turner demolished the opposition in both the Shot and Discus. Ula Cartwright-Finch clinched firsts in both the 800m & 1500m. Jennifer Wing won the 3000m, Luke Gray won the 800m for the U17s, Ruari McGonagle winning the same distance in the U13s. Bill Steel clinched the Shot and narrowly missed out on 1st in the Javelin for the U13s. A special mention to Gabriel Wilmshurst who was our sole representative in the U15s, coming a close 2nd in the High Jump, with creditable performances in the Long Jump and 300m.

Jim O’Connell writes: “Proud to be a Heathsider! The lads owned the 5000m today and our other participants seemed to be doing well in their disciplines at the Middx Champs. My support crew plotted up on the back straight and cheered the Heathsiders as they completed each lap. Adam and Andrew snagged county medals and the boys all seemed pleased with what they got out of the race. I went in looking for an even paced 19, and after getting a bit whisked along on lap 1, I ran solid, on my own.”

Monday evening also saw some of our Vets turn out in Stevenage for the Southern Counties Veterans' League (Herts & North Middx Division). Zac reports: “Thanks to all the London Heathside Athlete's for turning out yesterday evening in Stevenage, and managing themselves. A special well done to the Men for winning the 4 x 400m relay. The next match is at Copthall Stadium, Hendon (NW4 1RL) on Monday 13th June.” The team got 5th place overall and the relay team were the only ones to break 4 minutes.

In other races, Katherine Vinnicombe broke 50 minutes in the Oxford Town & Gown 10km. Elinor East was 6th Female in the Cotswold 51.5 Tri (with an Age-category 1st with a PB in the Bike section) and describes it as “a beautiful day and a great course”.

Phil HoggGeorge Stewart and David Hellard was over in the picturesque Belgian city of Liege, taking part in the first ever “Beer Lovers Marathon” where the organisers state: “The Beer Lovers’ Marathon is the perfect opportunity to reconcile effort and pleasure, in a crazy atmosphere made of music, costumes and party”.  Phil reports: “George Stewart, myself and various others took part in the inaugural Beer Lovers Marathon in Liege, Belgium on Sunday. Similar to medoc marathon in Bordeaux, the general idea is to party around the route, stopping to sample local Belgian beers and enjoy various bands, rather than run it seriously. In this we were successful, posting personal worst times each of 6 hours 13 mins, on a day which was otherwise a personal best!  The main sporting highlight occurred after dancing around to a band for 20 mins in the last km and then walking towards the finish line.  With 10 yards to go, each of us had the exact same thought which is that we could out sprint each other for the line. What followed was an eyeballs out lung busting effort from 3 of us,  which must have been a horrid scene to witness. However, I am pleased to report that I finished ahead of George by a whole second. Another first for me (and probably a last!)  This event will likely sell out next year, as its much more accessible than Medoc, and even more fun!"

David, however, adds - in a somewhat sozzled voice, that I’m totally, without any evidence, imagining: “I ran the Beer Lovershh marathon in Liege . Over 16 Belgian beer shtopshh .. It was amazing! Not 100% shhure of my time (not surprised! -ed.), but I came lasht in a time of around 7 hourshhh...I think“. Well, at the time of writing, there don’t seem to be any results posted anywhere to confirm runners or times. Still, maybe one for Heathsiders to consider joining next year?
