Speedy Kirk-Smith slams 15-year steeplechase club record

Heathside once again showed the competition how it’s done at the second Southern Athletics League match, with Heathside athletes competing in every event. With strong performances on the track and field, we narrowly missed out on first place by one-and-a-half points. And to top it off, Adam Kirk-Smith and Stephanie Kleynhans broke club records for the 3000m steeplechase and long jump, respectively.

Southern Athletics League #2, Erith, Sunday 22 May
This match was dominated by the long-distance ladies, who turned up in full force (having even co-ordinated their choice of shorts) and tore the competition apart in the 800 m (Ula CF & Sue R), 1500 m (Rebecca P & Ula CF), 5000 m (Anna O’H & Rebecca P) and the 1500 m steeplechase (Anna O’H & Genevieve W). Not only did Heathside win the A and B string for each of these events, our speedy non-scorers even beat some of the competition (hats off to Jessica V, Jen W, Satu H & Kim B).

The men’s team didn’t let us down either: Israel N and Ivan R got full points in both the 110 mH and the 400 mH. Jacob P and Adam KS followed this up with similar results in the 3000 m steeplechase.

Of course, the team results would not be complete without a few records being broken. With his not-too-shabby time of 9:33.0 in the steeplechase, Adam kicked Paul Lemmon out of the club records, lowering the time by just over 9 seconds. Steph K got 5.81 m in the long jump, a new PB and a new club record, breaking her previous April SAL PB/club record result by a mere 40 cm. Eh, guys, will you give others a chance, please? I can’t keep writing about just you two in every SAL report.

With every man and woman helping out, we were able to fill every single event (A and B string), a feat that none of the other clubs managed. Many thanks to the coaches (Mark, Chris, Nathan, Mike and Jacob) and other supporters who were there on Sunday. Finally, thanks Chris Dissanayake, Ivor Wiggett, Suzette Lakeros and Jonathan Litchfield for their role as officials. I would like to point out that, not only are the officials essential in making these competitions run smoothly, but they also give our team 2 valuable points each, which contributes to our success.

After correction of the results by each of the teams, we had our first place stolen away from us by one-and-a-half points. But after the performance on Sunday, I am pretty confident that we can move back up to the top at our next match.

Sunday’s final results:

Herts P = 193
Heathside = 191.5
Bexley = 178.5
Croydon = 172
