YDL, Night of the 10,000 PBs, Brathay Windermere Half and Richmond Park Marathon
The second SAL and YDL of the season dominated much of the weekend (the SAL will be written up separately). There were many spectacular results in the YDL by the under 13s and under 15s, including Gabriel, Ruairia and Bill coming first in their events. Also causing great excitement was the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000 PBs held at Parliament Hill track, with Adam just missing first place in the final lap. There was also impressive times in Brathay Windermere Half, Richmond Park Marathon and Eton Dorney Triathlon.
YDL, U13/U15, Southern Central 2, Eltham, Sutcliffe Park, 21.05.2016
Elliot wrote this report:
The second YDL meeting of the season at Sutcliffe Park in Kent saw some great performances once again, from London Heathside’s young athletes.
There were some impressive winners. Gabriel Wilmshurst won the U15 High Jump event with a jump of 1.50m. Ruairi McGonagle won the U13 800m with a time of 2.25.
But natural talent Bill Steel continued his fine form winning all three of his U13 events. First in 75m hurdles (14.57), first in the javelin (29.26m) and first in the shot putt (9.09m)
In the U13 Long Jump, Etienne Munday finished in second place (4.30m). He also finished second in the 75m hurdles A race in 15.43. Well done Etienne.
Etienne joined Bill Steel, and Arthur Reed, and Ruairi McGonagle to finish second in the 4 x 100m Relay, an incredible performance to beat some experienced sprinters from other clubs, and an improvement on their fourth place last time.
The U13 girls were pipped to fourth place in their Relay. Thanks to Celeste Lemoine, Sania Neunie, Mathilda Heath and Lorna Dumbledon
Mathilda Heath also finished third in the U13 Long Jump with 3.58m, and was impressive in the 800m to come fourth with a time of 2.47. And, sprinter Sania Neunie continued to show real promise coming third with a time of 11.03 in the 75m.
Big thanks go to all the young athletes who competed this weekend including Martha Lucas, Oliver O’Connor, Aaliyah Lakeman, Kit Naylor, Lewis Selwyn, and Jake Evans."
Marathons and Half Marathons
Sarah Illingworth took part in the scenic Brathay Windermere Half on Sunday and wrote: “The sun shone for the inaugural Brathay Windermere half marathon. The course was breathtaking in more ways than one with a rolling course and beautiful scenery. We raised our caps in respect when the 10 in 10 athletes started their 10th marathon in 10 days and for those running the challenging full marathon."
Nick de Sausmarez ventured down South to run a marathon with the deer in Richmond Park and wrote (apologising for his deer jokes, see if you can spot them...): "I think I was the only Heathsider to run the Richmond Park Marathon on May 22nd this year. It's a well organised, great race that takes place annually in May; if you are in a rut and want to buck up your ideas for next year give it a go. Only 300 entrants running and sometimes staggering up the hills. I did 3.51, a bit slow but it was a hot day. Hope you forgive me for the bad puns! Next up the Vanguard trail Marathon on August 7th-anyone else want to join me? "
Nick Dodd set off with high hopes in the Copenhagen Marathon, with his training having gone completely to plan. The one thing he hadn't done was any training in warm weather, and he paid the price - here is his sorry tale: "A warm day at the Copenhagen Marathon saw me pass half way in 1:45 feeling fine. By 15 miles I was starting to suffer. By 20 miles, I was veering wildly from side to side, maintaining "I'm fine" to anyone enquiring about my welfare. Between 21 and 22 miles I finally stopped, badly dehydrated, and spent the next half hour lying in the dust with intermittent cramps being attended to by a Danish army officer named Rasmus. No lasting ill effects ... except to my pride." From what I heard a few pints of Danish lager helped ease the pain pretty quickly...
Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000 PBs, Parliament Hill, 21.05.2016
Jacob sent in this small piece: "To see John (Driscoll) line up was a bit of a surprise as he wasn't on the initial starting list, but he ran a great time after an exuberant first lap or two. Adam smashed his PB, sitting in the leading pack who hauled in a lone leader, before breaking away with 2k to go, but was just pipped to the race win on the last lap. Nice warm up for breaking the club 3000m SC at the SAL the next day..."
Eton Dorney Sprint triathlon
Jo took part in the Eton Dorney sprint triathlon on Sunday, doing very well to come first in her age group, so early in the season.
Parkruns
Many parkruns were of course run - with first places achieved by Tom Aldred, Joanna Brown, Celine Murray.
