Fast Friday in Walthamstow, Watford & Herne Hill Open Meets & Last Friday 5K
The main event of the week was the aptly named Fast Friday event, although along with the fast times there were some lap counting errors adversely affecting 3 of our runners, as Gavin reports ;
Orion Harriers Fast Friday 5000m / 10000m, Walthamstow, 29/6/18
“Fifteen Heathsiders sadly had to miss the annual club picnic to do their duty in the sun at the Orion Harriers Fast Friday at Walthamstow track.
The standout run of the whole event came from Andrew Penney (a second claim Heathsider who regularly trains on our track and who joined us in the pub to celebrate). Running in the elite 5,000m event he timed it to perfection, staying in the slipstream of the Crawley AC runner Paul Nevesey before taking over with 300m to go and winning by a clear four seconds in a time of 14:38. Two weeks earlier Andrew ran 14:36 in the Southern 5000, but in Walthamstow he had the heat to compete with, as well as a top class field.
In an earlier 5,000 race, when the heat was sizzling, Kelly Thorneycroft was the fourth woman in an excellent time of 17:42. Joe McKeown also had an strong race, coming ninth in 17:42.
In the 10,000m b race Ed Samuels was the first Heathsider in 36:43, followed by Dan Johns in 37:25 – again, the heat slowing them down.
Most of us were placed in the c race. Chris Hartley was the first Heathsider and 4th overall in 36:47 (followed in quick succession by Steve Armstrong, Alex Sweet and Matt Cockerill). Bethany Scott had a strong run, finishing the second woman and silver medallist in the SEAA 10,000m championships in 38: 11.
Counting laps in a 10,000 (all 25 of them) can be a tricky business, as some of us discovered to our alarm. I was walking off the track when the marshal informed me she’d got mixed up and my smile of relief was replaced by look of despair. I saw similar dismay on the face of Liam who had put in a 150m sprint finish, so off we traipsed for a second final lap (this time slowly and sulkily). Joe Clemoes had a similar story to tell.”
