Gold medal at the European junior champs, experience triumphs over youth in Hillingdon and a 12 hour run in the dark
After the mass turn-out at last Tuesday’s club handicap, there are only a few (all high quality) races to report on this week. We have a gold medal performance at the European junior athletics championships from former Heathsider, Lily Beckford, speedy runs at the Watford open from Tom Fancett and Ryan McCrickerd and others, hard-fought battles for podium finishes between super-vet Ruth Miller and vet Sandra Buckton at the Hillingdon triathlon, as well as an exciting podium finish, and, potentially, a club record in an ultra marathon by Monika Newton.
Track and field
Many Heathsiders probably remember former junior Heathsider, Lily Beckford, who was selected last year to represent the GB&NI team in the World Junior Championships in the 400m relay team http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/beckfordforworldjuniors.htm?page=21. Last weekend, Lily, running her leg in 54:30, helped her team to storm to gold in the European Champonships in Eskilstuna, Sweden in an overall time of 3:34:36, over 3 seconds ahead of the second team (see here). Congratulations Lily – Heathsiders are proud of you!
Close to home, several ran in the Watford Open last Wednesday. Fastest Heathside performances of the day came in the 800m from Tom Fancett (2:01.3) and Ryan McCrickerd (2:04.5), who both set PBs, according to Power of 10.
We also have some belated results from the Veterans Athletics League, held over a week-ago in Hemel Hempstead. Unfortunately, there are currently no eye-witness accounts of the performances. However, Helene Kehoe ran well in the 200m, finishing in 31.4s, as did Edward Garret (10:12.2) and Tony Killilea (10:08.0) in the 3000M.
Road and multiterrain races
Nine Heathsiders ran in the inaugural Morrison’s Great Newham 10k run last Sunday, which goes through the Queen Elizabeth park and finishes in the stadium itself. James Connell (40:45) led the Heathsiders home, with Celine Murray (40:54) coming in first Heathside lady.
Meanwhile, Chris Hartley set a new course PB in the Northumberland Coastal run and reports: “This multi-terrain race, along beaches, coastal paths and a bit of road, is renowned as one of the most beautiful in the country, and is in its 35th year. 997 competitors finished the c14-mile run from Beadnell to Alnmouth, of which one was Chris Hartley, who beat his time from 2014 by a huge 7 seconds. A highly recommended race.”
Finally, congratulations are due to Monika Newton, who may have set a new club record for the ultramarathon, running in the Ultra 12 in Beale Park, in which runners have to run as many laps as they can during 12 hours overnight. She reports:” …after running for 12hrs 38 mins and 20 secs throughout the night and covering 70 miles I managed to secure 1st female trophy and a prize. It was hard work but I loved it. Also by taking part in this event I was raising money for my beloved local charity The Wood Green Animals Charity so I knew I had to deliver a good performance as failure was not an option!” She is hoping to make a speedy recovery as she’s running another marathon in four weeks time.
Triathlons
Sandra sends the following report from the Hillingdon triathlon:
“ Sunday's Hillingdon Triathlon was the third event in the Triathlon Championship Series. This long running and friendly event has the unusual format of swim, run, bike. And on this occasion there was the added challenge of a mandatory dismount to run through a set of temporary traffic lights. In the men's race the first four Heathsiders (Dave, Howard, Dominic and James) were all out of the water within 20s of each other. A little bit further back there wasn't much to separate Nick and Charles either going into transition 1. Howard managed to pull away from the others on the run and further consolidated his lead on the bike leg, finishing as first Heathsider and 8th overall. Not bad considering he had to make modifications to his shoes to accommodate his injured toe.
In the women's race it was battle of Vet (Sandra) vs Supervet (Ruth). Ruth led out of the water, but Sandra got ahead on the run. However Ruth had paced herself better and put in an excellent cycle leg to overhaul Sandra on the final cycle lap, proving that age and experience will always win over youth and in-experience. Ruth made the podium, picking up a prize for second place in the combined Vet/SuperVet category. And everyone enjoyed the post-race donuts.
With three of the four series events completed, it's tight at the top of the table with Howard leading Charles by 1 point in the Mens Sprint championship. Ruth leads the Women's Sprint Championships. But with best three races to score, it can all change with the final event, Redricks Triathlon on 13th September.”
Swims
Steve, Sandra and Briony took part in the Great London Swim on Saturday, with Sandra evidently using the 1 mile swim as a warm up for her triathlon the following day and Steve setting a new PB. Steve reports: “Lovely sunny day with a little breeze to just ruffle the water surface. The dock is now certified as complying with safe bathing water standards so no worries about swallowing nasty water from the ships still moored there. Water temperature 19.5C so if anything a little bit warm with a wetsuit.”
Parkruns
Finally, congratulations to Daniel McKeown, Andrew Brooker, Leigh James and Rebecca Bunting for their first places in the parkruns:
