5ks 10ks and Alps

A mix of mainly 5ks and 10ks this week with plenty of rivalries going on. Richard Macaulay came in just ahead of Ryan McCrickerd in the Self Transcendence 5k, whilst Dan and Joe McKeown went back to Coventry to seek out some local rivals. PBs for Rich, Ryan and Joe and a great run for Dan too. Meanwhile plenty of Heathsiders were both marshalling and running in the Standard Chartered Great City Race.  A couple of half marathons for Lea and Henry too, plus an Alpine swimrun event for Jane complete last week’s results.

Adderbury 3 Spires Half Marathon, Sunday 12 July

Henry Hamilton-Gould completed this race in 1.39.27. Henry reports: “After running this last year I knew what to expect - up, down, over, fields, gates, styles and the odd farm animal. It's a tough mainly off-road half marathon through the quaint villages and over the rolling hills of north Oxfordshire. Thankfully this years race was around 10 degrees cooler than last year so that combined with a little more training enabled me to cross the finish line very happy inside 100 minutes (a full 11 minutes quicker than 12 months ago) and placed 14th in a field of 77.  Om completing this I was happy to reach a small milestone of 50 half marathons. Here's to the next 50!”

Engadin Swimrun, Switzerland, Saturday 11 July

Jane Higgins, together with Louise Malone of Clapham Chasers, competed in this swimrun event in the Swiss Alps.  The race is part of the Otillo swimrun series and is made up of 48k of hilly technical trail running with 6k of swimming (split into 9 run legs and 8 swims through beautiful, clear and cold Alpine lakes). The race is a point to point format run in pairs (for safety on the swim) – point to point means you run in your wetsuit and swim in your shoes. With various race essentials/nutrition stuffed down your sports bra. It was a whole lot of fun in a beautiful sunny valley. The lakes were much warmer than expected (12-19 degrees) though so was the air temp (uncomfortable in a wetsuit). Jane and Louise will definitely be back for more swimrun events – though the race didn’t go entirely to plan on the day and we ended up having to keep an eye on the cut-off times at various time checks on the course.
