Heathside clean up Middlesex team titles and silver medals at Horsenden Hill, whilst club records tumble at Lea Valley

This week was one of great performances in hugely different conditions, from the Middlesex cross-country championships at the infamously muddy Horsenden Hill, where the youngsters achieved team titles and the women’s team won silver, to club record performances at the Lea Valley Athletics Centre.

Middlesex Cross Country Championships, Horsenden Hills 8.1.21

Simon Baker sent in the following report from Horsenden Hill:

“After cancellation last year the County Championships returned at the weekend at a muddy Horsenden Hills.  Indeed  it could probably have been more accurately described as a Tough Mudder with overnight rain ensuring the course quickly turned into a muddy mess with standing water adding to the runners challenge.  This however did not deter the hardy Heathsiders who turned out in good numbers to race.  The Club finished with two team titles (U15G and U13G), 5 2nd places and one 3rd place.  Individually there was silver to Issy Watkins (U15G) and bronzes for Oliver O'Connor (U20M), Hattie Munday (U15G) and Kiara Corkin (U13G) as well as 16 other top 10 places.

The U11's started the action with Rory Willis our first runner home in 4th just 9 seconds behind the winner, Close behind Rory was Charlie Nicolson and Mikail Wahlid to secure 2nd place in the team competition.  Charlotte Beale in 13th was the first U11 Girl with Reke Szentes in 19th place as the team finished 5th.  The U13 Boys were well placed with Koppany Szentes in 6th and Ben Redland 9th but were hit with Sam Turner having to pull out half way although Alex Poutney in 17th did secure 3rd place for the team.  In the U13 race the club had 8 runners, Kiara Corkin again was first home finishing 3rd against her fierce rivals Posie Shaw (SBH) and Jorja March (Barnet).  Next home was Amy Kirk in a superb 5th place and with Ivy Gray 16th the team finished in 1st place 4 points ahead of Title Holders Highgate.

The U15 races saw another dominant performance by our U15 Girls although Izzy Watkins was just unable to catch the race leader her 2nd place was supported by sister Milly's 4th place and Hattie Munday's 3rd place to easyily take the team title.  Indeed with Rubby walls 6th, Ishaana Cannell 9th and Lucy Corkin 10th our B team would have won silver.  In the U15 Boys race David Baah Okyere started stongly and was 4th after the 1st lap but faded a little on the 2nd with Gregory Berrisford Sweet finshing as the first Heathsider home in 11th with Tom Ballentyne  16th and David 19th to win the silver team medal.  We only had one complete U17/U20 team with the U17 Mens team of Roni Kizilkaya h Fred Beale and Janak Subberwal securing another silver medal for the club..  Elsewhere Maia hampton-Philips and Fabiene Weston ran in the U17 women's race and Oliver O'Connor ran a strong race to win bronze in the U20 mens race. Reliable sources have mentioned that it was the first time the Club has won either the U13G or U15G County titles, The U15G cup was first awarded in 1935

The Senior Women's race was pretty dramatic, while Hannah Viner (Highgate) secured the Gold medal leading from the start the team race was a very close run thing.  Brogan Wallace was our first finisher after establishing herself in the leading pack early on.  Josie Hinton was tracking close behind to secure 9th place, the scoring team was completed with Rhian Male and Ciera Kennedy in 19th and 22nd, Trent Park however had 4 runners home so took the title but Highgate were still waiting their 4th scorer who eventually crossed the line in 27th place leaving the Teams tied on points but Heathside awarded Silver based on countback.  The Mens race over a grueling 12,000m saw Dylan Evans (SBH) and Alex Lepetre (Highgate) battle it out at the front in what was now a very muddy course.  However Tom Aldred doggedly stuck at his race in a clear 4th place with james Wooldrige just 20s after in 6th place.  Further back the Heathside team were working hard together with 2nd and 3rd places in the team competition switching between Harrow and Heathside, however the group with Ismail Abukar 23rd, Matthew Rallison 24th, Harry Kleiman 25th and Francesco Melloni 27th the team were 3 points better than Harrow to take team Silver.

We are now at the business end of the Cross Country Season with the Met League next weekend at Wormwood Scrubs and Southerns later this month.”

BeFit Academy Open, Lee Valley Athletics Centre, 9.1.22

Simon Baker sent in the following report from the Lea Valley Athletics Centre: “Not all action took place in the Mud of Middlesex with a host of Club records broken by our Young Athletes at Lee Valley.  Suraya Frost in her first hurdles race as an U15 set a new Club record by 0.6s.  Imani Quamina fell in the first hurdle but in the second race broke a Club record that has stood since 2008.  Our young Sprint talent Gabriel Edwards then smashed both the 60m and 200m U13 records and is the ranked No1 UK U13B in Both events..   Mia Rosen opted to miss the XC and set a new U15G indoor 800m record.  Elsewhere veterans Adrain, Tony and Angela all produced great performances and Trey Corlis just piped his coach Israel in the Hurdles.”

In addition there were 3 new Long Jump records broken at Lee Valley; Imani Quamina (U17W) 4.38m, Martha Jolly (U15G) 4.66m and Gabriel Edwards (U13B) 4.55m.

Many Heathsiders ran in parkruns this weekend.  Congratulations for first place finishes go to Catrin Tyler (Finsbury Park, 19:57), Seyfu Jamaal (Highbury, 15:16), Worcester Pitchcroft (Julia Bijl, 18:03), Western Springs (NZ) (Keith Burrows, 18:52). Prize for the most exotic-sounding and the second most distant parkrun goes to Michael Gray (Woy Woy in Australia).  Full results can be found here.
