Women on the Brink of 4th League Title, Beth wins again and Indoor Silverware
A very full report this week with news of another win in the Met League for Beth and the Senior Women with 5th place for the Senior Men. Medals in the Southern Junior Indoor Championships at Lee Valley with Gold for Milton (U15 Boy 300m) and Max (U13B Shot Put) plus a silver and bronze for Gabriel (U13B 60m and Long Jump) more Cross Country and road racing in Battersea.
Met League 4#, Wormwood Scrubs, 15.1.21
The penultimate Met League race of the season took place at a muddy Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday although with the weather dry the race did not degenerate into the dire conditions of the previous week at the Middlesex Championships. Another bumper team of Heathsider’s had cleaned and dried their spikes for another days racing. Which did not disappoint with Beth Hawling continuing her fine form to win her fourth race leading the Women to the team win, while the men in another competitive race secured 5th place. Brogan Wallace secured 3rd in the Senior Women’s race and there were 6 other top 10 places. The Junior Men were 2nd and U13 Girls 3rd.
Senior Races
A great team of 22 lined up on the Senior Women’s starting line with Beth taking up the pace almost from the start with newly crowned Middlesex Champion Hannah Viner (Highgate) trying to keep close in contact. After the half way point the two were close together again only for Beth to put the hammer down again and end with a convincing lead of 30s by the time she crossed the finishing line. Behind her Brogan had been slowly picking off runners and crossed in a superb 3rd place with Rebecca Bunting back from injury not far behind in 6th place. Heathside shirts continued to appear over the line with Evangelista Divetain 12th, Olivia Desborough 18th and completing the A team scoring Rebecca Piggott in 23rd to register a convincing team win. With a buffer of 274 points on 2nd placed Highgate in the League the Clubs 4th successive Senior Women’s title looks assured. The Vet Women finished 2nd and remain 3rd in the League.
The Senior Men’s race was a highly competitive affair although Highgate who had sacrificed the Middlesex Championships to concentrate on this race were victorious although Alex Lepretre eventually lost out to Woodfords Tom Firth who won the race. First home for us was Tom Aldred running another solid race being the first V40 over the line. James Wooldridge was only 10s behind in 22nd place while Kieran Morris, Matthew Rallison and Charles Hardy packed well together to finish in 49th, 53rd and 58th places. Likewise Francesco Melloni and Harry Kleiman finished almost together at 28 and a half minutes. Another 45s and Christopher Gracie, Filippo Minelle, Conor Brown crossed the line with Peter Gould and Andy Barnes close behind to complete the A team which secured a hard fought 5th place. The Mens Vet team were 3rd and remain 3rd in the League. Mention should go to Mark Jefford who in 191st place was the first V55 home. The Men retain their 2nd overall position but now have Thames Valley Harriers only 22 pts behind.
Junior races
Slightly mixed results with teams weakened by school races, illness and many recovering from the trauma of the County Championships. However there was a good number of U11 Boys led home by Rory Willis who is really enjoying his running this season finishing 4th, there was a bit of a gap to our other runners Seb, Alex Charlie and Connor but the team finished a creditable 5th place and still remain 2nd overall in the league. Imogen Gomeze making her debut was the only Heathside representative in the U11 Girls race.
The U13 Boys only had two runners one better than at Uxbridge but disapointing given this is the Clubs major XC competition.Sam Turner showed he had recovered from his injury last week where he had to drop out of the race to finish 10th, another debutant Dylan Mills was just behind in 11th place. The team finished 6th and sit 6th in the League. Our U13 Girls could not repeat their wins in their last two races finishing 3rd here behind a strong Woodford team and Highgate. Kiara Corkin was first home in 4th ina another hard race with Posie Shaw (SBH), Jorjia March (Barnet) and Natasha Wynn (Woodford), Natasha just going past Kiara in the closing stages. Amy Kirk is getting stronger as the season progresses and was next in 6th. Thereafter a tired Caitlin Roberts was in 26th with Maya Westgate and Margot Hunt finishing 20s later.
The Junior Women’s race saw an excellent battle at the front between newly crowned County Champion Lyra McDonald (VP&TH) and the eventual victor on home turf Adela Svihalkova (TVH). Behind them Hattie Munday ground out a solid 7th placewith Ruby Walls only 14s behind. Maia Hampton Philips was next in 22nd place with the scoring team completed by Ella Mae Hancock. Despite finishing 5th here the club still sit 2nd in the League. The Junior Boys produced our best performance of the day finishing 2nd to herts Pheonix. Roni Kizlikaya like so often this season was our first representative over the line in 6th place, Bedo Draskoczy was 13th and David Baah-Okyere 17th. Fred Beale completed the scoring in 20th place.
As a result the Club still sits 2nd in the Overall Junior Table but now by only 0.5 points ahead of SBH. A good turnout at the last race at Trent Park on 19th February is needed to ensure we remain in 2nd place.
