Chingford League, Epping Forest, 22.1.22

Orion Harriers organised the 5th installment of the Chingford League with a spectacular XC through Epping Forest with views over the Lee Valley towards North London. The weather was benign making a great mornings running. Heathside’s participating numbers are also creeping up with 7 Seniors taking part this time led home by Luke Parker who finished the 8km course in 35.25 minutes.Gareth Marshall and team captain Pete Crockford running his 600th competitive race were next with Lee Connor and Marco Bartlett completing the men's team. Kim Butler and Sue Eedle represented our women's team.

This race isn't a priority for the young athletes session but Rory Willis (U11B) has run in 4 of the 5 races winning 3 and runner up in the other. He sits in 3rd place overall only because the two ahead of him have run in all 5 races. On Saturday he finished 8th in a mixed U13/U11 race and was the 1st U11 Boy home.

The League returns to tarmac with a 5km race around Victoria Park in February,

Team Captain Pete Crockford writes “The organisers promised a lovely, scenic true cross country course, and they did not disappoint – quite fitting for my 600th race! Two long steep climbs per lap that had the vast majority walking did not stop everyone enthusing afterwards, with plenty of mud, tree roots, narrow wooded twists, adverse cambers, and open sections with fine views.

Gareth didn’t see the luck promised by his “Angel” number 888, losing a spike plate early on, but ploughed on gamely. Kim and Marco spurred each other on to strong finishes. Luke was happy racing again, and he and Sue both enjoyed the challenging course. My spikes gave me the edge over Lee’s trail shoes on the steep descents.

The last individual Chingford League is a 5M road race in Victoria Park on the morning of Sat 5th February. Its flat and free – everyone welcome!”
