SEAA Southern XC Championships, Beckenham Palace Park, 29.1.22

We are close to the climax of the Cross Country Season now with the Big Championships before the climax of "The National" on Parliament Hill on 26th February. Saturday was the South of England Championships held on a new course at Beckenham Palace Park, a former golf course and now public park overlooked by a large Country House. The weather was beautifully sunny although the wind did pick up during the day. The recent dry weather also meant the course was firm underfoot with much of the course run over mud and gravel paths.

The Senior Women led by Beth Hawling, who secured the Club's first senior individual medal in the race, produced one of the Club's greatest Cross Country performances winning silver with all 4 scorers finishing in the top 30. Elsewhere a weakened Men's team were 22nd and the Junior teams produced two 15th places, 16th and 19th, which however (excluding the recent U20M's silver) are probably our best ever set of overall results. We believe Izzy Watkins' 14th place in the U15 Girls race was our highest ever ranked finish by a girl.

Seniors Race

The Senior Women's race of 8,000m started with the customary charge before dropping down to make a small loop. Heathside were already well represented at the front of the pack before the field headed out on the first of two laps. 2020 winner Jess Gibbon (Reading) started to take a lead the field stretched out behind her, Beth who had been 3rd fell back to 5th some 20m behind 4th place after falling heavily on one of the descents. That was the way it stayed until the very closing stages when Beth started a charge as those ahead of her started to feel the early race pace. As they made the final turn into the finishing straight Beth caught and passed the 4th placed Sarah Astin (Belgrave Harriers) and pulled away up the last climb to take Bronze. Behind her Brogan Wallace had run a steady race to finish in 17th place. At this point 3 AFD runners and two Cambridge Harriers had finished, Basingstoke then saw a spate of runners come in with 12th, 29th, 25th and 26th place and all 3 looked in prime place for the medals. However Evangelista Divetain had been joined in the later stages by Annie Arnold, in her first race for the Club, and they crossed the line in 29th and 30th places to move the team into 2nd place with Aldershot's last runner finishing in 31st place securing them the Gold. Seven other Heathsiders also ran.

The men's team was somewhat weakened but ran valiantly with Charles Hardy the first home in 135th place, the remainder of the 6 scorers all completed the 4 lap 12k course in under an hour with Andy Barnes 154th, Oliver Negus 240th, Tom Fancett 246th, Ben Palmer 264th and Ben Williams 267th. There were another 9 Heathsiders taking part.

Junior Races

The Junior races were slightly frustrating with several of our youngsters missing due to Covid or other commitments. This is also an awkwardly timed race for all the Middlesex Clubs coming as it does only 2 days after Middlesex Schools XC Championships. The U15 Boys started the day's action off after being held on the line for 20 minutes while Marshall's got into position. David Baah-Okyere was our first runner home in a race blighted by some poor marshaling and course marking with runners getting lost in the woods or taking the wrong route. Despite this the lads finished in 16th and the leading Club from Middlesex and the Met League.

Next off were the U13 Girls with Amy Kirk leading the team with an admirable 38th place after finishing in 5th place in the Middlesex Schools. Lettice Gundry, back from illness, ran her typical unfused race to finish 84th. The remaining girls Ivy Gray, Jessica Lappin and Elkie Baker stuck together round the course to cross the line almost together and securing 15th place for the team. Frank Bailey was the only U13 Boy to run in only his 3rd race of the season and will have learnt lots from the experience.

The U15 Girls have been our strongest age group this year. Izzy Watkins the newly crowned Intermediate Girls Middlesex Schools Champion showed real grit to run again so soon finishing in 14th place out highest placing in a girls race in recent memory. Sister Milly was next home with Hattie Munday next. Ella Mai Hancock completed the scoring with Amara Odegoberin and Madison Fawley also running. In what was one of the most competitive age groups the team ended up in 19th place.

The U17 men only had four members with Roni Kizilkaya first home in 65th place with Fred Beale next in 91st. Jabak Subberwal and Michael Smith supported themselves round to finish in 124th and 125th places to secure 15th place overall. Maia Hampton-Phillips was our only U17 women finishing 71st, she too had run in the Middlesex Schools. Injury depleted our U20 Men with Oliver O'Connor again our only runner finishing 41st.

There is now a blank weekend for Cross Country before the last run of races for the season with NWLL/Sunday League on the 12th/13th Feb and then the climax of the Met League with the final race at Trent Park on 19th. That is followed by the "National" where with 89 senior runners alone we have the biggest Club Entry.
