Heathside delivers at sunny SEAA road relays

On a sun-kissed weekend four Heathside teams delivered accomplished performances at the star-studded Southern road relays, the Fleet Half produced several PBs, several of our YAs ran in the English Schools XC and there were also promising results at the county indoor track & field champs.

One of the more prestigious events in the athletics racing calendar, the regional road relays, took place across the UK this weekend, with the Southerns version in Milton Keynes on Sunday including appearances from the likes of Olympians Steph Twell and Chris Thompson, and the talented teenager Jess Judd, who was warming up on the infield while a few of us Heathsiders played catch.

Thanks to Coach Jacob’s persistent rallying and organising efforts (see the concentration in the photo), and the acquiescence of those of you who stepped up fairly late in the day to boost numbers, Heathside fielded two women’s and two men’s teams – 12 women in total and 24 men. But we didn’t just turn up in good numbers – our women’s A team finished 8th out of 30 complete teams, and our men’s A team 18th out of 38, with the B teams coming in 26th and 36th, respectively. I believe both A-team performances surpassed Jacob’s targets, leaving him with a warm fuzzy feeling for his efforts, although that could have been the sun. We also earned ourselves invitations to the National Road Relays, so stay tuned for more news on that. New Heathside member Ni’ia, from New Zealand via Australia and a bit more travelling, ran the first and fastest leg for the Heathside women’s A team, and George and Brent the fastest long (8km) and short (5.05km) legs for the men’s A team. Hats off to the marathoners who went on crazy long warm-downs after their legs to tick off the all-important long run. Folk were tired.

Also encouraging this weekend are the performances mainly of our young athletes at the Middlesex Indoor Track & Field Champs at Lee Valley, where coach Nathan Cyrus in particular had several athletes competing. The long jump results stand out in my mind, with three of our lads in the top 5.

Elsewhere we had five Heathsiders represented in the English Schools Cross-Country Championship, several PBs were achieved in the Fleet Half, others ran 15 mile-plus races in Surrey, Dave and Clare tackled 10m high walls and barbwire crawls (they didn't literally tackle those though ...), Alex did a sprint duathlon ... and there's probably more to report. It seems to have been a particularly successful weekend on the parkrun front, with PBs (course-specific) I think for Dom Jackson, John Driscoll, Andrew Dunderdale, Stuart Meiklejohn and Jane Higgins, and a happy birthday 16:14 and win for Tom Aldred.
