Heathside finishes second with a solid performance at Thurrock

The highlight this week was the final SAL last Saturday, which included great contributions from the team of Heathside helpers and fantastic performances from many Heathside athletes.

SAL, Thurrock

Noelle sent in the following report from the SAL last Saturday:

“Firstly, a big thank you – the SAL season could not have run so smoothly without the help of Jonathan Litchfield, Officiator Extraordinaire, whose team of helpers enabled the events at every single SAL this summer to run well. Alongside Jonathan, the team yesterday comprised Jerry Odlin, Chris Dissanayake, Zac, Tony Killilea, Mark Jefford, Olivia Desborough, Jessica Vinluan, Orrin Ross, Lily Woolcock, Bethany Scott, Steffi Luker-Edwards, Kim Butler, John Flahive, Dave Walton, Claudia Backhaus and Mike Bense, and contributed to the, now standard, Heathside reputation for good organisation and friendly, experienced officials.

Key performances yesterday included Adam Kirk-Smith, whose registration came through the day before the match and who won the 800m, 5000m and steeple chase, despite running the latter with broken spikes. He then ran the 4x400 in a pair of borrowed spikes. Persistence paid off for Emmanuel Nwaobodo, who got PBs in both the triple jump and the long jump. As always, Nathan Cyrus and Ivan Ross covered multiple events between them, including 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, and pole vault; Nathan also did triple jump while Ivan did high jump and javelin. Izaiah Turner also showed his talent in the field, including obtaining a big PB in the javelin. Our new Heathside members who competed as non-scoring athletes showed great promise for next season, with solid efforts by Deji Agbede in the 400m, Simon Everard in the 100m and 200m, Kollier Din-Bangura in the 100m and long jump and returning Heathsider Djanira Da Costa in the 100m and 4x100m relay. Jenny Wing and Lily Woolcock led by example to show off their multiple talents: Jenny competed in 800m, steeple chase, high jump and 100m hurdles (having learnt the hurdles two days earlier), while Lily competing in 400m hurdles, 1500m and steeple chase (leaping over a steeple chase barrier for the first time that week). Yanna Raykov bravely competed in pole vault and won the B string despite injuring her ankle during her warm up.

Our solid performances put us second behind an extremely strong team (Tonbridge) and will keep us highly placed in our division, maintaining our position from last year and further demonstrating the depth and breadth of Heathside’s talent. To recognise this talent, SAL awards will be given out at the Heathside AGM at 7:15pm on Monday 10 September at the track – make sure you’re there!”

Civil Service Track and Field Champs

Three Heathsiders competed in the Civil Service last Wednesday at a breezy Lee Valley. Tony Killilea sent in the following report:

“The competition took place alongside the Police Service championships, which made for a busy programme which the officials did a great job at managing.  Amid the coppers there was no shortage of gold, silver and bronze for the three Heathsiders involved.

The most arresting performance was from Dan Johns who took the senior silver in the 800m and bronze in the 1500m as well as an M40 gold in the 800m.  Pete Crockford showed why he is the 8th ranked British M60 in the 5000m this year by taking the gold in that age category. Tony Killilea took the M50 gold in the 400m and silver in the 200m. All were a little disappointed by their times, but the wind meant quality times were very difficult to achieve. Hopefully the haul of medals was sufficient reward for the efforts of the day.”

Elsewhere:

  • Carl Heap ran well in the Burham Beeches half marathon, finishing in 1:43:58 and 3rd V60.

  • Five Heathsiders took part in the London aquathon last Saturday, comprising a 400M and a 5K run.  Chris Baker led Heathsiders home in 29:34, followed by Gail Mackee (22:34) and Lixx Diaz (23:39), whilst Sue Eedle finished the first in her age category (F60) for the second time in less than a week.

  • Paloma Gabriel ran in the Regents Park 10K on Sunday finishing in just under an hour (59:49).

  • John Mullee finished the Isle of Wight half marathon in 1:47:26.
