Heathside runs the London Marathon

Months of hard training and long runs finally came to an end on Sunday for at least 42 Heathsiders, who ran in the London marathon.  Cheered on by Heathside’s bobble hat rabblers and the unique London public, there were great performances and PBs, and an unforgettable day was had by all.

Mini marathon

The day started with excellent performances in the mini marathon.  Among the U17 boys, Jem O'Flaherty ran well to finish 40th overall and 7th in London (15:16) followed soon after by Liam Garrett (15:27), and Antanas Weston (17:32).  Among the U13 boys, Thomas Archer had a good run, finishing 18th overall and 5th in London, followed by Ruari McGonagle who finished 12th in London.  Meg Naylor (19:27) and Phoebe Crockford (22:20) had great runs in the U17 girls as did Rose Garrett (18:52), Lorna Dumbleton(21:04) and Fabienne Weston (24:14) in the U13 girls.  The results are listed by borough instead of by club, making it difficult to spot whether other young Heathsiders had also been running.

Marathon

The marathon started with perfect conditions, doubtless contributing to the numerous PBs and great times, with 18 Heathsiders running sub 3 hours and 38 running sub 3:30.

First Heathsider across the line was Sergio Gonzalez Manzaneque, finishing in the amazing time of 2:37:43, with a negative split and what appears to be a 7 minute PB, and hardly breaking a sweat at the same time.  He was followed soon after by Kimon Doullis (2:42:50) in what could also be a PB.  A cluster of four Heathsiders then finished within 2 minutes of each other (Dan Madams – 2:44:27, Juan Carlos Casal Perez – 2:44:51, Mario Cadete – 2:45:25 and Chris Hartley – 2:46:42).  Congratulations are due to both Mario and Chris for achieving high rankings in their age categories (34th V45 and 23rd V50 respectively), as did Gavin Evans (2:59:44) who finished 20th in the V55 category.

Bethany Scott led the Heathside women home in the super-fast time of 3:04:45, making it all look so easy.  She was followed by Monika Newton (3:18:37), whose run was all the more extraordinary as it was her second marathon of the week, coming just 6 days after she completed the Boston marathon in the heat, in 3:24.  Liz Drake was the third Heathside woman, finishing in a speedy 3:26:48 and securing a new PB.

Prize for PB of the day goes to Liam Hazelton, whose hard training, dedication and, of course, the Heathside 10am Sunday training runs resulted in him slashing 25 minutes off his PB to finish in 3:18:23.  It was also great to see Kris Milovsorov finish his marathon in 3:32:35 after his long period of injury last year.

Other notable runs of the day include those of David Hellard and Sara Black, who contributed to the smooth running of the marathon and helped many people achieve their ambitions by running as pace makers for the 3:15 and 3:30 category.  Rob Shulman used the marathon as a training run for an ultramarathon and ran 13 miles to the start, before finishing in 3:08:49 and a 4 minute negative split.  Heartfelt commiserations go to Satu Hietanen, who started the race and bravely battled with stomach cramps and enormous blood blisters until 18 miles, before sensibly deciding to call it a day for this year.  We look forward to her comeback!

The Heathside support along the route did not go unnoticed.  Monika Newton summed this up nicely, saying:  “I'm pleased with my time… I think it's down to Celine & Co and Claire & Co...they were really supportive and very noisy, exactly what I needed. I just want to say THANKS so much for your support guys. You have been amazing xx””.

Proud coach Jacob Howe also deserves some credit for many of the great performances.  Dan Madams comments: “Also, I would like to personally thank Jacob Howe for all his advice and support during this marathon training block...we are very lucky to have a coach like him for our club.”

Finally, it just remains to wish everyone a speedy recovery and well-deserved rest, and we look forward to seeing all runners and the famous bobble hats back in action soon.  As the inspirational saying goes, COYH!
