Middlesex Young Athletes League, Hamburg and Southampton marathons and Solitudelauf half marathon
A few people ran in races away, or, in some cases, very far away, from London. Highlights include the Middlesex Young Athletes League, Watford Open meeting, the Hamburg and Southampton marathons, and the Solitudelauf half marathon.
Middlesex Young Athletes League
Ruth sends the following report from the Middlesex Young Athletes League, held last Saturday:
“This was the inaugural match of the new Middlesex young athletes league – set up by the local clubs in response to demand for shorter local matches with more age groups ( u11 – U17) and more opportunities for non-scorers. 9 clubs participated ( plus 2 guest clubs) and it was universally agreed a great success. London Heathside got off to a good start coming 4th overall. There were however huge gaps in some age groups ( u11 boys/u15 and u17 girls) so there is room for improvement at the next match at Finsbury Park on May 20th. This will be our chance to shine!
There were so many great performances , many from new members and PB’s for others. So scroll down and see all the results. A few to note are the winning u11 girls relay team; newcomer Imani Quamina 1st U11 75m; Sanaa Neunie 1st U13 100m; Mathilda Heath and Nell Swinhoe both excellent PB’s n the U15 800m; newcomer Bedo Draskoczy 2nd U15 1500m in a great time of 5:10; Ettiene Munday our budding multi eventer 1st U13 75m Hurdles and Long jump ( 4m:56); new comer Chris Budden close 2nd U13 Javelin with an amazing 21m01. And our U17 sprinters Callum, Issac and Casper denied the opportunity to compete in the relay(another story!) but showing their supremacy in the 200m. Well done to all the young athletes and thanks to our officials Ivor, Jonathan, Suzette, Tom and Therese.”
Watford open meeting
There were good runs in the Watford open meeting last Wednesday. Yanna Raykov ran 400m in 63s, Rosa Serafini consolidated her 800m running, finishing in 2:17, whilst James Wooldridge sped round 3000m in 8:49, followed by Andrew Brooker (9:07) and Pete Crockford (11:15).
Southampton marathon
Pete Bakewell and Nick de Sausmarez escaped the London crowds to run in the Southampton marathon last Sunday. Pete reports:
“I chose my old hometown Southampton for a spring marathon, held on the same Sunday as London. It was the first time in 33 years they have held the full distance. Wary of blowing up as I did last time and gunning for a sub 3, I held back at the start and went through the half in 1:29:20, cutting it fine. Overall it was a great event, but after 2 hours the marathon merged with the back of the half marathon field. The weaving until the end didn't help but I crossed the line in 2:58, having touched the wall rather than smashed into it. Really pleased with a sub 3 and a thank you to Jacob and his training plan, and all the Heathsiders through the training sessions!”
Nick also ran well to finish in a 3:40 although suffered in the heat and comments that he didn’t have a good middle race.
Hamburg marathon
Tim Sander and Raymond Yau went to Hamburg for their marathon, where the weather also posed a problem. Tim was particularly pleased by the fact that it was his first marathon and he was doing it when he was 50 years old. Tim comments: “Had aimed for a sub 3:45 hr time and clocked in at 3:42:47. Really chuffed but it was very tough! Not helped by the awful weather with rain and hail. It was freezing cold! Big thank you to Jacob and Kabir for their excellent training support and to Ant Chaimowitz for his invaluable advice which I could not have done without (and if I had stuck to his and Jacob's pacing recos I would have been faster still). More marathons beckon! Next target is a sub 3:40.”
Congratulations are also due to Raymond, as he got a PB of 3:15:11,despite the rain, wind and hailstones. Commiserations go out to Madeleine Minson who travelled out to Hamburg, hoping to run the marathon, but came down with a chest infection a few days beforehand, forcing her to watch from the sidelines.
Solitudelauf half marathon
Chris Hewertson took part in the Solitudelauf half marathon in Germany last Sunday. Sandra Buckton clarifies the origin of the name, reporting: “The event is named after Castle Solitude which it passes early on before taking on a couple of hillly forest loops. Chris ran well in his first half marathon in over two years, finishing in 1hr34 and 8th in his age group.”
Parkruns
Many Heathsiders ran in Parkruns last week-end. Congratulations for first place finishes go to Ryan McCrickerd (Hampstead Heath, 17:16), Tom Fancett (Highbury Fields, 17:41), Ursula Wilson (Orange, 22:20).
