Heathside thrive in St Ives and Lily shines in schools champs
The main news of the weekend is track and field: Lily was excellent again at the English Schools Champs in Birmingham, winning her 400m heat and coming a very close third in the final in 54.90s. Next stop, Oregon!
Our senior track and field team, meanwhile, put in another great performance in the SAL on Saturday, coming second in the fixture behind the current league leaders. The difference in attendance to last season was key - we had almost all the events packed out with competitors and secured maximum points in quite a few of them. We're just shy a couple of female pole vaulters, so here's some video inspiration for the ladies if anyone fancies having a crack next time.
Adrian submitted the following account of the afternoon's action:
"As we were going to St Ives, if only we'd met a man with seven wives, two of whom could pole vault. Instant free membership of Heathside for those two and (nursery rhyme spoiler alert) a quick reversal of direction back to St Ives as part of our team.
"On a blisteringly hot afternoon in the Cambridgeshire countryside there was another superb Heathside performance. The first tannoy points announcement had us about 30 points behind the league leaders, the second 17, and at the end we finished second by a mere 14.5 points (292.5 - 278). If only there had been a few more events!
"With everyone doing a lot to contribute to the overall effort it's not really fair to pick out individual efforts, but I'm going to anyway:
Scafford - maintaining order all afternoon by the long and triple jump pits, together with volunteers of all sorts
Sue, Kabir and Izaiah - who had nearly every event covered and an almost error free set of results
Nathan - it's really good to see him contributing to 5 scoring events, as well as running 100m just to prove he can after a season long niggle
Rosa - in her first outing for the club
Djanira - nominated three times for Man of the Match (in the 'Women' category)
Rachel and Richard - who seem to have finished nowhere but first
Everyone else - without whom..."
Note: next match is our home fixture at Lee Valley on 2nd August where we will be up against Hillingdon, the team just above us in the League. Another good turnout is required - look forward to seeing you all there!
We had more great results for Chris (6th overall) and Lou (female winner) at the Lee Valley 10K, which Chris describes thus:
"Mainly following gravel paths, some tarmac, some nice soft grass and the odd hump-back bridge to get in the way and slow you down.
"Lou had a fun battle with another runner which she eventually won to get first lady in 43m43s . I was in a good group of three and got round in 37m19s. Both pbs but that happens by default when you've only done two 10Ks before."
There was a battle for bragging rights between Rick and Dom in the Human Race Steelman, which Rick reports on:
"A closely fought tussle between the two of us: Dom’s best ever swim with the two of us exiting the water and going over the timing mat together. We were together for the bike but he dropped me fairly quickly on the run." Apparently Dom managed also to go slightly astray on the run, which seems a bit more embarrassing than doing it during the swim.
In half marathon news, Leigh was first lady in the Windmill Half in Blackpool and it looks like there was a snorting finish between Andy (6th overall) and Jack (7th) in the Surrey Badger, Andy coming out on top by four seconds. Presumably, he was buying the drinks afterwards, although I think the organisers do give out beer in the race goodie bag.
Elsewhere, Tony continued his love affair(?) with the mile at the Cambridgeshire Open Meeting: "If I was a moaning type (he moaned), I’d say the wind was the most ferocious I’ve experienced in a track race, even including Finsbury park." Tony duly took shelter behind a bunch of other runners, coming 8th of 13 in 5:18.
