Beckford selected for World Juniors
You can’t beat this for good tidings: our very own Lily Beckford has been selected to represent the GB&NI team in the World Junior Championships! A stunning track season so far has been wonderfully rewarded with a slot on the 400m relay team sheet. And the beauty of it is that she hasn’t heard the news yet!
One month shy of turning 17, Lily has been with Heathside for many years and regularly competes in the navy, gold and red vest – on the country, road and track. She’s had a stellar track season so far this year, specialising in the 400m for which she has brought her time down to a sensational 54.38, which ranks her 7th U20 in the country and 34th overall for the distance.
But get this - she’s apparently hiking around Surrey for a Duke of Edinburgh award so is unaware of her selection. There’s a surprise waiting for you Lily… In any case, congratulations from your fellow Heathsiders! We’ll be rooting for you!
The championships are taking place in Eugene, Oregon, from 22-27 July. Check out the programme here:

And now back to the more standard but still worthy race report fare – first of all a long overdue reference to a Youth Development League (YDL) fixture that took place at Parliament Hill on 22 June. I regret not being able to spare the time right now to paste all the results as it’s very fiddly, but will provide a link so that you can take a look and see how the younger generation is faring – more future stars in the making?

As to the more recent results, I’m going to hand you over to them but not before leaving you with a commentary from Tony Killilea on the Self Transendence 3x1 mile relay of Monday evening. Also note bene (oh yeah) the belated results from the Orion Harriers Fast Friday 5000m & 10,000m event in Walthamstow in late June, where Tom won the 5,000m and Tom Stephenson impressed in particular in the 10,000m.
“Three Heathside teams took part in the Sri Chimnoy Self Transcendence 3X1 Mile relay on Monday 7th July at Battersea Park. And it was an impressive night for Heathside as all 3 teams made the top 10 (out of 47 teams). The men’s V50 team of Tony Killilea, Gavin Evans and Chris Hartley came first in their age category and 9th overall. Of particular note is that Andrew Brooker ran for both the other Heathside teams, producing remarkable times given that he had only a 5 minute break between legs. He supported Miron Woldemichael and Daniel Szana to 5th place overall, and Myles Calderazzo and Jacob Phillips to 7th. It was a competitive but fun event and I’d recommend it to anyone. The next relay is on 4th August.”
