Cowman Triathlon, LICC, Sportives, a Duathlon and the Golden Stag Mile
It was a relatively quiet weekend of running - perhaps Glastonbury was to blame. BUT even Dolly was not enough to distract the intrepid gang who braved the Cowman 2014 (half ironman plus) triathlon at Milton Keynes, and who came home triumphant.
There were some excellent results at the LICC on Saturday at Hendon. Of special note: Henry Damon came first in the 100m, and Long Jump, Liam Garret came first in the 800m and Izaiah Turner first in shot put 6k and numerous PBs. Elsewhere, cycling predominated over the weekend - Alex Galloway came 2nd in the Velodrome duathlon in a time of 45.03 (first M20 - 39), Julia Kelk and Tom Upchurch took part in the White Rose Classic Sportive, in hilly Ilkley, 120 miles, Sam and John took part in the 102 mile Chiltern Classic Sportive, and earlier in the week Rebecca smashed her PB (running!)in the Golden Stag mile in Hendon.
Below are some first hand reports on these events:
Cowman 2014, Milton Keynes 29/06/14
Gavin sent in this report: "Six of us took part in the Cowman 2014 (half ironman-plus) in Milton Keynes. There were near-perfect conditions – not too hot, not too cold and only a bit windy. The 1.9km swim was in a rather weedy lake, the 92 km cycle (two more than the standard Half Ironman) was undulating with quite a few hills and the half marathon run was mainly off-road, like a long, dry cross-country. It started raining just after we finished. Howard Gold was the first Heathsider home, in a new pb time of 4:58.07 (8th V40-44). Next was Steve Armstrong in 5:23.24, followed by Marco Luna in 5:24.31, which included an astonishingly fast 28:04 swim (he was second out of the water out of 287 starters). This was only his second triathlon, and he is new to the bike. He was followed by Paul Mccrossin (5:34.24) and Gavin Evans (5:42.46). Sarah Swinhoe completed the swim and cycle, but couldn’t do the run because of her torn achilles."
Chiltern Classic Sportive, 102 miles, 28/06/14
Sam Thompson and John Driscoll took part in the Wiggle Chiltern Classic Sportive at the weekend, and with a little research I discovered that the distance they did was described as Epic, and from the sound of it, it was. Here's John's report - "It was my first attempt at a 102 mile ride and fortunately as Sam's a bit of a veteran, I was expertly paced round with him combining the carrot (encouragement and tecky tips) and the stick (dragging me away from the flapjack stops) as needed! After a warm sunny start, at mile 40 it began to rain, at mile 50 it chucked it down and stayed that way until mile 95. Fortunately there was 6,000 feet of climbing to keep us warm and we stayed hypothermia and puncture free and finished in 7:22:47 including stops. My second Wiggle sportive and can highly recommended them as very clearly signposted and plenty of food!" Sam also wanted it to be known there were many flooded roads en route, and sadly not enough peanut butter sandwiches!
White Rose Classic Sportive, 120 miles, Ilkley, 29/06/14
Report in from Julia: "Tom Upchurch and I did the White Rose Classic Sportive, Long Route. 192km (120 miles) and 3,658m of climbing. It was the hardest ride I've ever done and it made the Ironman last month seem easy! Tom did it in 7h34 and I did it in the much slower 11h16, including long stops at badly needed feed stations! (Only 14 women actually did the Long route and there were 1,032 riders in the Sportive. Thankfully they don't actually give rankings. I didn't come last, though!)"
Parkrun results for the weekend can be found here.
Don't forget the annual club Handicap race will be held on Tuesday 15th July at 7.30 in Highgate Woods, and if you plan to run and haven't already contacted her, let Gabi know on gjisathome@hotmail.com.
