Heathside wins in Colchester

The highlight of a hot week was Heathside’s sterling performance in Colchester where our athletes pulled out the trumps in large numbers, coming first by a mile - placing us in close range of a promotion.

And it was also a big week on the road with 36 of our members taking part in the inaugural Hackney Half Marathon, while nine of us competed in the Trent Park Triffic Trail 10k, and others took part in 5ks, fell races and cycle races.

All-in-all, around 100 of our members took part in races over the past week. Here are some highlights:

Sweatshop Southern Athletics League, division 3, round 3, Colchester June 21

Heathside came first with 312 points, beating the Colchester and Tendring home team, Serpentine and Braintree & District, thanks to sterling efforts in the heat and the wind from just about everyone, and to a big and enthusiastic coachload turnout, which meant that many of our athletes ran as non-scoring ‘guests’, occasionally (as with Andrew Brooker in the 2000m steeplechase, outpacing our scoring competitors). In every event we managed to put up an A and a B athlete and in virtually every race with managed either a first or a second place.

With so many good performances, it is hard to pick any out, but a few really caught the eye. In no particular order among the men…

·
*   19-year-old Jordan Glaze’s 11.1 winning the 100m and help us home in the 4x100m relay.

·      *   Filmon Rossum (also U20) winning both the long jump and the 400m and coming second in the triple jump.

·      *  Izaiah Turner (also U20) winning the hammer throw with a PB distance of 27.99 after coming second to Nathan Cyrus in the discuss
and to Emmanuel Nwabodo in the shot-put

·      *  Nathan Cyrus winning the javelin and discus

·      *  Tom Aldred doing a Mo Farah – coming down from marathon to win the 1500 in a canter – 4:09 (10 second off his PB but still 14
seconds ahead of the Serpentine lad in second place) 5.85

·         Heathside 4x100 men taking first place in 44.2

And among the women….

·         * Djanira Costa (U20) wining the 100m in 12.6, the 100m hurdles, the triple jump and coming second in the 400m hurdles

·         * Niia Hothersall winning the 400 and 800m

·         * Sue Rust easily winning the 1500, coming second in the 3000 and third in the hammer throw.

·         * Anne-Christine Scherer winning the long jump, high jump and shot putt and coming first in the B race of the 100m hurdles.

·         * Rachel Seckl (U20) winning the 1500 steeplechase after pulling up short in the 3000m, not feeling well.

·         * Molly Harrison, still U17, winning the women’s discuss with a throw of 27.42

·         * Angelica Wynter (U20) winning the women’s javelin

Hackney Half Marathon, June 22

It was a hot day for the maiden Hackney Half, a bit too hot (at least 20C), which meant that most of our large contingent of runners fell a bit shy of their PBs or their expectations. There were some complaints about their being not enough water stations (only four), and that the mist showers were badly placed, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Alison Harrow reports: “The route took us through some of Hackney’s best and not-so-best landmarks: starting at the vast Hackney Marshes, taking in Homerton Hospital, Hackney Downs, Hackney Empire, MY HOUSE, Kingsland Road, Broadway Market, London Fields, Victoria Park, Hackney Wick, Olympic Park, and back to Hackney Marshes. Sadly Hackney’s prettiest canal paths and byways would have been too narrow for the size of the field, and some of the route did take us through some dodgy-looking parts of town but a diverse landscape nevertheless, so truly representative of Hackney.”

As for the performances, Dan Madams was our first in, and the fourth veteran, in 1:19.19 followed 16 seconds later by Chris Jones. Katy Webster was next, and the second woman. Also impressive was Anna Clarke, who said she was disappointed with her fourth place and time of 1:25.25 (gun time – she had no chip time) Leigh James was the next woman in at 1:25.39, followed by Rebecca Bunting in 1:28.32. Paul Jarman was the first V50 in 1:27.45.

Trent Park Triffic Trail 10k, June 22

Nine Heathsiders took part in this trail run in the Sunday sun. Here’s Caroline White’s report: “A pretty trail run all taking place within the park - a bit like one of the xcs there we know so well, but without the mud .As they describe it: ‘grass and path, woods and open fields, a few hills and some fast roadway’. Actually quite a few hills!  As for everyone this weekend very hot and steamy - but enough shade in the woody patches to make it comfortable.  Given the terrain no-one was going to break any world records for a 10k, but everyone I spoke to really enjoyed it, and would do it again - I certainly would.”

Chris Burn was our first man home in 38:23 and Louise Atkin our first woman in 45:02 (second woman). Caroline White in 47:49 was the first women’s V45.

Etape du Sussex, June 22

Here’s Claire Sliwerski’s report: “Agi 'Masochist' Palanki roped a couple of us into the Etape du Sussex.  Norbert and I sensibly did the shortest distance available (47 miles which was actually just shy of 50 miles) with Agi tackling the longest distance (again, 87 miles which was actually 90).  The whole thing was a hilly nightmare for 2 out of 3 of us, 4 hours of grinding up hills and trying not to go flying over potholes on the steep downhills and attempting to refrain from throwing things at the photographers placed at the top of hills to capture the worst moments.  Agi is officially sacked from deciding on any races from here on in.”

St Alban’s Half Marathon, June 15

Four Heathsiders took part in what was once one of our stalwart club races, with Carl Heap coming away with the V60 2nd place in a time of 1:38.53. In his words: “Not a very special time, but who’s complaining?”

Parkruns, June 21

At least 26 of our members ran in parkruns on Saturday, with Richard Macaulay deserving mention for coming first in Grovelands in a time of 18:02. For the full Heathside results, go to: https://www.parkrun.com/results/consolidatedclub/?clubNum=2017
