Lily flies to Southerns 400m glory

The main event of the weekend was the South of England Athletics Championships at Crystal Palace, where Lily Beckford flew to victory in the U20 400m.

To put this in context, Lily's time (56.04s) would have secured fourth place in the senior women's race; her PB would have got her third.

Lily wasn't the only Heathsider in action: Tom A and Adam ran PBs in the 5,000, and Ni'ia and Sue had a great battle in the 1500, finishing 5th and 7th. James and Tom F ran well in the 800, David competed in both 100 and 200, while Daniel and Izaiah were throwing javelin and discus, respectively (not at one another, I hasten to add) - full results below (and now the obligatory call to action):

Track and field - it's the stuff of legends: Bolt, Farah... Beckford...

Well, your chance to showcase your talents is this weekend in the Southern Athletics League in Colchester.

Heathside needs runners, jumpers, throwers and officials - Heathside needs you, in short. (Yes, you. Don't act surprised.) So cancel that BBQ and keep your eye on the website / Facebook group for more details. x

Other races

Elsewhere, Gavin reports: "Six of us did the Self-Transcendence 10K: a fast, flat course, but a bit muggy on the day.

"Dan won a little trophy for coming seventh (he was also the first V40 but, oddly, there is no V40 prize). I won a little trophy for being the first V50 (yes, there are three V50 prizes but no V40s).

"Also, note the results (below) of Griffiths brothers, Tom (17) and William (15)!"

Triathlons Howard and Marco were at the Brett Ashford Triathlon on Sunday, as Howard reports: "This being Marco's first ever triathlon, he thought it best to give his new wetsuit a try out in the Heath men's pond on Friday afternoon. No point in over doing the swim training after all. My prep involved both arms full of vaccinations and a night on the wine up in town. And last week's fell race still in my legs. "The swim was the first time Marco had raced in open water so he took it a bit easy exiting the water in a totally amazing second place."  Although Howard swallowed most of the lake in the swim, he managed to overhaul Marco on the bike and extended his lead in the run, so at least England got one thing off Italy last weekend. (If you don't get the football reference, back in your cave with you.) Meanwhile, Claire S had to contend with a 'brutal' swim leg in the Windsor Triathlon: "You had to battle against the current before you'd even started to stop yourself floating off down river and waves of around 150 people being set off only 4 minutes apart equaled swim carnage. "Just what you want when your wave sets off at 6.28AM; there's nothing like a 3.15 alarm call on a Sunday morning..." Overseas Claire Morrissey has been flying the Heathside flag in Ireland over the past couple of weekends with a half-marathon and a 50k, coming third in both.  "The first and second ladies in the half and 50k were in another league and for the 50k (10 x 5k loops) it was an education seeing them cover the distance with poise and ease.  I have a lot to learn (and even more training to do) if I line up for 50k again." Fair enough Claire - it's such an iconic distance.
