Ickenham 5, Snowdonia Fell Race, Hull 10k, Jubilee River Swim, Blenheim Tri, St Albans Half to name a few

Masses of races this sunny weekend kept Heathsiders (and now me) very busy – there was the the Ickenham 5 our newest addition to the Rob Jackson Road Race championship, the Blenheim Triathlon, a 1000m Peak Race in Snowdonia,  the Jubilee River swim, St Albans Half, Hull 10K and much, much more.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, the first part of the Track Club championships took place and the results are already up on the website and can be found here http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/docs/ClubChamps2014Pt1.pdf . Don’t miss part 2 early in July.

Below is a selection of race reports from the weekend. All results of all races this weekend and quite a collection from last too, are fully listed at the end:

Blenheim Triathlon 07/06/14On Saturday Gabi and Henry Hamilton took part in the sprint section of the Blenheim Tri. Gabi said after a torrential rainstorm early in the day the sun came out, giving her perfect conditions and she came in 18th in the F45 - 49 category (out of 165) in a time of 1.35. Henry commented that his time was a bit slow at 1.41, but as he was recovering from doing a marathon the week before he was relieved to finish!

1000 Metre Peaks Race,Snowdonia, Wales, 07/06/14Chris Burn, Clare Miller, Louise Atkin and Howard Gold went to Wales at the weekend and took part in what sounds like a pretty tough fell event - Chris tells the tale:
Clare, Howard, Lou and myself were in Snowdonia on Saturday for the 1000m Peaks Race: a 33km/2700m ascent fell race that starts on the North Coast near Bangor and finishes on top of Snowdon after traversing all five of the peaks over 1000m altitude in Wales. We were back for the 2nd time after having so much fun (?) last year. It’s a great route with a bit of everything: slogging through heather, fast descents, rocky plateaus where you can’t quite get into your stride and much more…the final ascent up the Pyg track to the summit of Snowdon is probably the easiest bit although by that point the legs aren’t very responsive. The weather was fairly awful this year but we got stuck in and all had good runs: for me I wasn’t expecting much on the day put managed to tough it out for 3rd place after guiding the eventual winner most of the way, Clare and Lou were 5th and 6th ladies and Howard was just behind in 31st overall ….not bad for bunch of Londoners pretending they know what fell running is!

Ickenham 5,  Hillingdon, 08/06/14Twenty-one Heathsiders entered this latest race in the Road Race Championships. It was a fast, flat two-lap course, and a very well organised, friendly, low-key event, with about 250 entries. Dan Madam was first Heathsider in, in a time of 28.22 (2nd V40) closely followed by Martin in 28.52 and Chris 29.02 and Gavin 30.47 (2nd V50 )- these four winning the men’s team prize. Leigh James was 3rd woman overall, first Heathside lady, in a time of 32.13, 2nd Heathside lady was Claire Jellema in 36.42, and 3rd Caroline White in 36.48 (2nd V55). On a sizzlingly hot day (22C at the start) times were down a bit for some, but everyone agreed it was a great event and hopefully this will become a regular in the club champs list.

St Albans Half Marathon, 08/06/14Gareth Marshall enjoyed his first time at the St Albans Half marathon and had this to say  “Early pace over the first couple of miles was slightly based on guesswork thanks to a stopwatch fail on mile 2 (user error) but just about held the planned pace until around mile 10 when the hills and the sun really started sapping the legs and I began to tail off. Fortunately had just enough left in the tank to sneak under 90 mins Would defo recommend it next year, great course, superbly marshaled and where else do you get an ice lolly at the finish?” The only other Heathsider I could find doing this was Carl Heap finishing in a time of 1.38. There may have been other Heathsiders there, but there is no way to search by club in the results.

Hull 10K 08/06/14Cathy Jeremiah smashed her PB once again and came in 2nd woman, flying home in a time of 39.15.

Southend  Half, 08/06/14Gavin and Alice Parish ran this and here’s Gavin’s report: It's a fairly flat course with definite PB potential were it not for the weather, which was as high as 26 degrees during the race, with zero shade and the sun bearing down the whole time. Thankfully there were plenty of water stations and wet sponges being handed out. This was Alice's first half in almost 2 years and she wanted to get round in under 2 hours, which she achieved with some very even pacing. My pacing on the other hand was all over the place! We were both very pleased with our times and positions in a field of 2233 finishers.

Jubilee River swim, 08/06/14Claire Sliwerski, Alison Harrow and Briony Fane took part in this 10k river race (as a relay), Alison wrote the report: A beautiful day dawned on the Jubilee River Swim Relay, near Eton in Berkshire on Sunday 8th June, organised with thanks to Claire. The Team – 3 Heathsiders (Claire, Alison and Briony) and a (Mornington) Chaser, Lizzy were on the road to the event by 6.30 am, fresh and ready for action. After the rather stressful ‘orienteering drive practically circumnavigating all of Berkshire to get there’ [quote, Briony], we arrived at the start at 9.45am with just 15 minutes left for Alison, who was swimming the first leg, to pull on her wetsuit and get into the water – this she did, but at exactly the same time as the starter gun was going off, and so started the race 30 seconds behind the rest of the field. However she made up time, and came out at the end of the leg having left a decent numbers of swimmers behind her. Alison said, “with no waterproof watch, I had no idea how long I’d been swimming for, or how far I’d gone, so seeing the finish point of my leg was a relief…must do some ‘sighting’ training tho, reckon I added on 200m distance to my race from swimming into the twisty river banks at times!”  Next was Claire, bounding in for her 3.5k leg, an important part of her Half Iron Man training. She stormed through the water, keeping our team place up, sighting beautifully of course. Next was Briony, who looked like a graceful swan throughout her 2.6k leg, coming out of the water saying “I loved every single second of it, didn’t want to get out”. Then Lizzy, on the final 1.5k leg, who despite being modest about her swimming fitness, raced much faster than she expected and came out smiling for the flat coke laid on for swimmers, with medals and drinks later, we went home happy. Beautiful race in beautiful waters We came in 23rd overall, out of 36. Luka Melon amazingly did the whole caboodle (ie 10K!) in a time of   2.20.41 he was 24th overall. coming in 16th male.

Battersea 5ks - Charity 5k, 08/06/14 and Sri Chinmoy 5k, 09/06/14Andrew ran a PB in the Battersea 5k charity race with a time of 19.54, and Gavin and Ryan ran in the Sri Chinmoy 5k on monday 9th - Ryan in a time of 17.23 and Gavin in 18.35

Elspeth ran the Margate 10K, 08/06/14Elspeth ran this in a time of  43.32

Late additions:
Edinburgh Marathon, 25/05/14
Some late additions to add to the Edinburgh marathon results  (a couple of results  went out a few weeks ago) . Results are only now trickling in, as the organisers originally made the results available only to participants. Apparently after many complaints and much upset the organisers sent out a message saying that they realise results should have been public – and they now are! Although you still can’t do a search by club – only by runners name. Congratulations to James Falstead  who completed it in a time of 3.28.34 and to
Laura Boothman 04:14:19

A fair number of track results didn't make it in to the report last week - so appear below including those from the Bedford International Games where Lily had a fantastic run in the 400m; the UK Youth Development leagues in Eltham and Bromley where amongst many excellent results, of note Izaiah Turner came first in the Shot Put and Tony Killilea came 1st in the 1500m at the Surrey and Sussex County Masters' Champs and first in the 1 mile London Inter-club challenge.
