Heathside victorious at SAL
Congrats this week to everyone who turned out to contribute to an overall Heathside victory in the second match of the SAL. Special mention too to Mike Stocks who completed Comrades in a fantastic time of just a shade over 7 hours, and Phoebe, Liam and Ruari for some excellent performances in the Youth Development League.
Southern Athletics League, Gillingham Sun May 31st
Well done to all the Heathsiders who turned out for the second SAL match of the season ... we won! I don't have many other reports of the day (rainy I expect) but it looks like Jonathan Litchfield and Jessica Vinluan were on a mission to do as many events as possible between them! Well done too to Cathy Jeremiah for first places in the 3000m, Rebecca Bunting for a first place on her debut steeplechase and first place in the 1500m and a first for Ivan Ross in the pole vault. Youth Development League Match 2 Parliament Hill Sat May 30th
Another enjoyable and successful day with 31 youngsters from 5 different training groups competing together for London Heathside. Lots of parents and brothers and sisters there to support and help as well. The outstanding performance this week was Phoebe Crockford who knocked a whacking 8 sec of her PB in the U15girls 1500m to come second in 5. 27 .
Liam Garrett and Ruairi Mc Gonagle showed they are equally strong at 800m as 1500m winning there races in style. Liam 2.15.2 Ruairi 2.28.7. Some strong performances by The Under 15 jumps boys. Well done to all and we wish, Frankie and Rocco swift recovery from their injuries.

Edinburgh Marathon
We had sixHeathsiders running in the Edinburgh marathon, at least two of whom are now in the “All Years Edinburghs” club of having done all 13 Edinburgh marathons. All reports attest to a strong headwind in the last 8 miles or so.

Alice Parish did the half in 1.54.32 (PB, well done Alice!).
ING Night Marathon, Luxembourg
Rachel Newstead came 7th in 3.06.57
Comrades Marathon, South Africa
Mike Stocks underwent his annual pilgrimage to South Africa to run the largest ultra in the world the Comrades marathon. 56miles with an additional half mile added on for road works, this is a gruelling race. It was an 'up' year with 1400m of assent over the 'big five' hills. Mike finished in an astonishing 175th place out of a usual 25,000 entries and 10,000 finishers in a time of 7.05.48. Simon Heale also finished in 11.09.11.
BBC Running Club 10k, 28/05/2015
Dan McKeown came 7th in this 10k in Regents Park, described as 3 nondescript laps, livened up by 2 runners ahead arguing with each other about cutting corners.

Bristol 10k
Alison Harrow raced the Bristol 10k in 53.37.
Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon, San Diego
After travelling 6,000 miles on an 11 hour flight, followed by very little sleep, James Dark represented London Heathside at the Rock’n’roll Half Marathon in San Diego, California.
An undulating course, but populated with more cheerleaders than proper hills. James reports that the severe jet lag contributed to a very surreal experience but also a new PB of 1.36.01.
European Masters Athletics, Grosseto
Tony Kililea took part in the half marathon at the European Masters Athletics Championships Non Stadia (EMACNS) in the charming and attractive Tuscan city of Grosseto. He continues: "Being on the coastal plain the course was nice and flat. Unfortunately the real obstacle to decent times was the freakishly hot weather which lasted for one day only. The temperature was 20C at start time but had soared to 36C by the time the medal ceremonies occurred. Even the winner said that the last few kms felt more like a marathon than a half. Well, I thought I’d get my excuses in first before disclosing my time of 1:24:13 which was disappointing given that I’d been hoping to dip under 1:20."
Tony still came 12th overall and takes home a bronze medal as part of the British M50 team.

Triathlon corner
Sion Lewis and Jane Higgins competed in the Olympic Distance open race at Hyde Park this weekend, where the rain made for a slippy and tricky bike course.
287 Sion Lewis Swim (1500m) 32.31, T1 4.30, Bike (36.5k) 1.09.39, T2 2.30, Run (10k) 37.44

Meanwhile over in Florida Julia Kelk Upchurch raced the Singer Island Sprint Tri on Sat 30th May. Julia reports that it was a gorgeous sunny day (um, as always) and the ocean was very rough, no wetsuits permitted. Nice flat course except for two huge steep climbs back and forth over the infamous Blue Heron Bridge on both the bike and run, which made things much more interesting. Julia was 3rd woman overall (out of 73) and 25th overall (out of 239) in1:00:05.
400m swim: 6:14, 10 mile bike: 27:42, 5k run: 21:31
Chiltern 100 Sportive
While others were battling the unseasonable weather on the track and at Hyde Park, a small group of Heathsiders headed off to tackle the hills of the Chiltern 100 sportive in the rain. Billed as the 'toughest sportive close to the capital' there were two options; the 177km Gran Fondo with 2100m of climbs or the 122km Medio Fondo with 1900m of climbs. John Driscoll, Steve Armstrong (having warmed up the previous day supporting Sam on 'Swaintoux') and Chris Hewertson set off on the Gran Fondo. John, showing that he has more in common with Jonny Brownlee than just his running, was unlucky to get a puncture, which meant that he and Steve missed the cut-off and were diverted onto the Medio route. Chris, also with mechanical problems, just got through the cut-off to complete the Gran Fondo. Sandra set off on the Medio Fondo, and due to a navigational error, covered 8km and 150m of additional climb before even completing the first official km. The great British weather certainly helped to make this a tough Sportive, and in John's words "it was worse than last year because it was raining from the start this year but last year it only started raining 5miles in".
