Night of the 10,000m PBs, PBs and wins at the Middlesex Championships and Herts triathlon

This Bank Holiday week-end was dominated by wins and PBs.  We have some belated results from the famous night of the 10,000 PBs last week, where Tom Aldred and Adam Kirk-Smith ran fabulous times, with Tom’s time being the best that that a Heathsider has achieved for many years.  The highlight was the Middlesex Athletics Championship last week-end, where Heathsiders came away with 12 medals.  There were many outstanding perfomances and PBs, notably from Rachel Seckl, Henry Damon, Adam Kirk-Smith, Jacob Philips, Darnell Plummer.  Heathsiders also excelled in the Herts triathlon and achieved PBs in various other road runs.

Detailed reports on these are included below, followed by the results.

Track and Field

Night of the 10,000m PBs

There are some belated results from the Night of 10,000m PBs, hosted by Highgate Harriers over a week ago, where Tom Aldred and Adam Kirk-Smith were the sole Heathside representatives.  Both ran exceptional times, with Tom’s time being the best that a Heathsider has achieved for many years and only just over a minute short of the club record. Joe provides the following eyewitness report from the scene:

“Last Saturday was the Night of the 10,000m PBs at Parliament Hill - a festival of 10000m races, culminating in the England Athletics 10000m championships. Tom Aldred and Adam Kirk-Smith both ran brilliantly, finishing 10th (30.46.47) and 16th (32.28.01) in their respective races. In true Heathside fashion, we had a troop of rabblers on the top bend, cheering and jeering the athletes each time they passed.”

You can see Tom in action, and hear some of the background rabble, through the following link:

Middlesex Athletics Championships

The highlight of this week was the Middlesex Athletics Championship, where there were some inspirational performances, with numerous PBs and wins.  Iziah’s inimitable report (copied, with minor edits, from Facebook), sums up the achievements and atmosphere:

“After a long day at Lee Valley, the Heathside squad walked away with an impressive 12 Medals, with doubles coming from Henry Damon, who leapt to a PB distance of 6.19m in the long jump, whilst running to and from the high jump; Adam Kirk-Smith, who, after winning the 5000m with a new PB (15:17), notched a second place in the 1500m only 30 minutes later; Jacob Phillips came away with a first place in the 3000m (10:19:49) and made his debut in the 1500m with a third; the last double came from the best-looking guy in the club (me) with wins in the shot and discus. There were also amazing performances from Darnell Plummer, who ran a PB (11:65) in the 100m, a relaxed win from James Wooldridge in 800m (2:06.70) and cracking runs from both Richard Macaulay (2:03.04) and Tom Fancett (2:01.56) in the 800m. There were places from new athletes as well. Well done to all those who competed today - you have done the club proud. Our future stars will be competing tomorrow at Mile End, looking to add to today’s tally, if you can get down there and cheer them on.  Before too long you will be charged for their autographs….”

Iziah also reports on the women’s events:

“We also had women at the middlesex champs, but after yesterday they should be seen as gods!!! Noelle rounded out the day with two strong performances in the hammer and discus.  There are now on-going talks about changing the clubs name to “London Throwside”.  Liana made her official debut for Heathside with a PB and third in the 400mH with ease, Rachel Seckl (10:34.66) made her return to the track with a monster PB in the 3000m, teaching us a lesson: Exams = PBs. Of course, no competition is complete without the machine herself, Helen Kehoe doing her part, showing that age is just a number by storming home in both 100m (15.10) and 200m (31.28) with PBs, bringing down her own club records doing so.”

BMC Gold Standard Races

Congratulations are also due to David Spencer, who, after a respite from injury, ran well in Watford last Wednesday, completing the 400m in 65:43, bringing him to the top of the over 65 category.

Road Races

An enjoyable Bank Holiday morning was had by all ten Heathsiders who ran in the BUPA London 10K in Green Park.  Tom Aldred was the first Heathsider, finishing in an impressive time of 30:43, only 2 seconds slower than his time in the Night of the 10000m PBs, followed by Ryan McCrickered (35:14) and with Robert Bowler (44:20) and Jim Connell (38:17) setting new PBs.  Rebecca Bunting completed in a great time (38:55) as someone else.  Jim had something on his conscience during the run and his confession afterwards helps to explain what spurred him on to achieve his PB: “I managed to check a crate of cold beers into the bag drop, so that after the race we could sit in Green Park with a well-earned beer and a picnic! I don’t think one could get away with such naughtiness at every race.  Also, the beers were still cold when we got to them so it was double win!”.  We shall see if Heathside’s captains will use this trick to secure future successes in cross country and track and field events.

PB-hunters everywhere will be interested in the amazing success rate at the Battersea Park Self transcendence 5K on Bank Holiday, where five out of the six participating Heathsiders reported PBs. They were led home by Richard Macaulay (16:46) followed soon by Mark Anderson (16:56), Matt Collins (17:17), Joe McKeown (18:32), Doug Rendle (18:41) and Mark George (20:22).

Nine Heathsiders had an enjoyable morning in St James Park on Sunday in the Westminster mile.  Caroline highly recommends it, saying: “Really well organised slick event , along the last mile of the London Marathon route, and the sun shone for us all morning.”  Stephen Monaghan (5:06) was the first Heathsider over the line, with Gareth Marshall and Jonathan Litchfield finishing in 5:15 and 5:30 respectively.  Congratulations are especially due to Caroline,  Steve Monaghan and James Taggart for setting new club records in their age categories.

Elsewhere, Alun Nash was the lone Heathside representative at the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K, completing in a respectable time of 49:04.

Finally, Monika reports a correction to last week’s report on the Battle of the Boroughs, noting that she finished first woman and not second: “The race results page is incorrect and I have already emailed the organisers asking them to change it. I believe Ashleigh is shown as female as opposed to male hence the confusion. I know I definitely finished the race as a first girl as a have a big trophy to prove it.”  Following Monika’s email, the race organizers have now updated their website.

Triathlons and Duathlons

Several Heathsiders got up at dawn on Sunday to take part in the Herts triathlon, and were rewarded with wins in the age category rankings.  Sandra sent in her report:

“It was an early start on Sunday at Stanborough Lakes, Welwyn for the first event in the triathlon championship series, the Herts Triathlon. The Standard distance racers were first underway at 7am for two laps round the lake, and Dominic Jackson was the first Heathsider out of the water and into transition. The sprint distance racers followed after with Martin Potter leading our men out of the water and a great swim from Hannah Carmichael making her the first Heathside woman out of the water, with Dave Walton not far behind. The bike route was out and back along a fairly flat B road with a small hilly loop of country lanes and a number roundabouts to negotiate. Howard Gold put in the fastest bike leg for our men whilst in the women's competition, Jackie Wastell and Ruth Miller managed to catch Hannah. The run was on grass with a some good hills, which had the weather not been so dry, would not have been out of place in a met league cross-country event. With the Sprint event forming the Herts County Championships, the best triathletes in Herts were out to win, but we still managed to pick up some age group wins. Jackie Wastell and Ruth Miller both won their age groups and Martin Potter and Charles Redfearn came second in theirs. In the less competitive Standard distance event Sandra Buckton won her age group. The next event is the Dartford Bridge Triathlon on 21st June.”

Meanwhile, close to home, a few Heathsiders took part in the Dragonslayer’s Duathlon, a fun event, comprising a 3m run /15m cycle / 2 mile run around the 1 mile circuit at the Velopark.  Dan’s reports: “Steve overhauled Dan and John in the second half of the bike leg and topped it off with a strong run. Catherine was making her duathlon debut, as was John's wife, Zorika. It was a fun event at the VeloPark and there are more throughout the summer - checkhttp://www.veloparkduathlon.com/.”   Photos from the event, including one with Dan's mysterious pre-race pose, can be seen on Heathside's Facebook page...
