No CrouchEnders cliffhanger as Heathside clean up at Hornsey 10k
Doo doo doo doo doo dooooo do...apologies both for this week’s report being somewhat slower to arrive than Dirty Den's comeback from the dead and also for the excruciating CrouchEnders ‘gags’, partly inspired by the fact that Minty from Phil's garage started the week’s big event, the Hornsey/North London YMCA 10k. There was no suspense or cliffhangers in sight as the stellar cast of Team Heathside cleaned up more thoroughly than Dot Cotton’s launderette, with Rebecca Piggott crowned Queen (Vic) of the women’s event (more to come on the ladies’ fantastic performance later) while Heathside picked up both the men’s and women’s team prizes and young Liam Garrett strode home to win the u-16s race in the junior events.
Events in Hornsey dominated proceedings this week and reports/submissions were generally thin on the ground but at least a few of your were out and about running elsewhere. Monika Newton had a great run as she represented Haringey in the Battle of the Boroughs 10k at Greenwich Park, while there’s a couple of STOP PRESS late entry reports from Simon Bailey who was at the snappily named Monster Mojo Middle Distance Triathlon and Race Reporting’s own Dan McKeown, who managed to miss out Paul Lemmon’s and, er, his own efforts in Race 1 of the Wimbledon Trail Series last week. There were also a few results from sprint meets at Lee Valley and another busy Saturday morning of parkrunning. Now, for a bit more on...
Hornsey/North London YMCA 10k, Hornsey
One of the real highlights of our road running calendar, another bumper turnout on a glorious day - mercifully not quite as hot as last year - saw Heathsiders produce a string of excellent runs and dominate the prizes and, in the women’s case, the whole podium. For the men, Andy Barnes produced a season’s best to finish 3rd in 36:14, while Chris Hartley - who I think was conveniently running as, er, the other Chris Hartley - came in one place further back in 36:28 and Luke Wynne made it a Heathside 3-5 - and wrapping up the men’s team prize - with a PB time of 36:57. Now on to the women. In short, they demolished the field. As mentioned earlier, Rebecca Piggott came home as first lady in an excellent time of 38:37 but amazingly 2nd and 3rd places also went to ladies wearing the navy, red and gold as Ella Waldman and Rebecca Bunting both clocked impressive times of 39:18 and 39:26 respectively. While not troubling the medal places, there were still some great performances elsewhere in spite of the warm conditions and tricky gradients, with Allan Whatmough (PB), Rob Shulman, William Griffiths (a huge PB for him, knocking 5 minutes off his previous 10k time and finishing as 1st u-17), Jonathan Hopkin, Doug Rendle (PB), Mario Cadete (PB), Kris Milovsorov (PB), Trevor Wilson, Mark Anderson (and buggy!) and myself all going round in under 40 minutes. Slightly further back but no less impressive, Carl Heap, who has run each and every one of these events over the past 25 years, was 1st in the M60 category, Caroline White also took 1st in her category and there were a whole host of PBs, including for Elliot Reed, Sandra Buckton, Laura Boothman and Victoria Phillips.
In the junior events, Liam Garrett won the u-16s event, while there were 2nd place finishes for Rauari McGonagle, Rose Garrett and Phoebe Crockford in their respective races. Well done to them all. Thanks to Pete Crockford for a really nice photo of them all but embedding it in the report without destroying the Heathside site proved beyond me.
Thanks of course go to all the Heathsiders who acted as marshals on the day, helped lay the course out the night before or were involved in any other way. This is always a hugely enjoyable event and having such support the whole way round really does make a difference.
Battle of the Boroughs 10k, Greenwich Park
Monika Newton had a fantastic run on what she described as a hilly course, finishing as 2nd lady and 4th overall at the Battle of the Boroughs Event. Looking through the results, it seems Greenwich used home advantage to end up as the top team while it delights this Wood Green resident to see that Monika helped Haringey to pip Islington to become the top North London Borough.
Monster Mojo Middle Distance Triathlon, Peterborough
The event website makes a cast iron guarantee that this event will help you find your mojo again if you happen to have misplaced it (no really) and Simon Bailey - I’ll assume his mojo was intact anyway - reports back from an event that sounds a bit like my worst nightmare (apart from that one where you’re in the office, with no clothes...I’ll leave it there): ‘a cold early season morning in Peterborough for an half iron (ish) distance race. 1.9k swim, 82k bike and 19.7k run in 5hrs 55mins 50 secs for 76th place from 95 on the day. Had a great run in 1hr 45min in part thanks to the cross country fun over the winter’.
Wimbledon Trail Series (Race 1), Wimbledon
Over to Dan for a brief summary from his race the other week: ‘There were two of us in action at the Wimbledon Trail Series Race 1: five muddy miles round Wimbledon Common. Unfortunately I'd somehow taken the impression it was a 5k and paced myself accordingly, putting in a strong 'finish' at three miles, only to find there wasn't a finish line anywhere in sight and there was still plenty of race left to run, most of it uphill. Paul Lemmon ran a slightly more sensible if less flamboyant race, finishing second vet, first V50. The next race in the series is June 3rd and it's *definitely* five miles long - I've checked.’
Parkruns
Rebecca Bunting features on the podium again (metaphorically this time) as she was first female finisher at Oak Hill, while Tom Fancett threw in a sub-18 mins time at Highbury Fields and Sara Dark deserves a mention for setting a big PB over at Hackney Marshes.
