Heathside women top Met League
A bumper weekend report this time with several highlights. Our women once again took first place in the Met League (in Uxbridge) with three of them in the top ten – Rebecca Piggot, Olivia Desborough and Josie Hinton, and after three events they are well in the lead, while our men are in second point with Seyfu Jamaal coming fourth. Also, at the Lee Valley Open Magdeline Paitoo set a new U17W record breaking Jayed Mayes 15-year-old record in a time of 41.64. Meanwhile at the Valencia Marathon seven of our 12 runners ran under three hours, with Jose Sabroso Oliete running a PB of 2:44:27 despite running with a cold, and Rebecca Bunting ran 2:45.31 despite racing for Great Britain in the 50k eight weeks earlier.
Metropolitan League 3, Uxbridge, Saturday, December 3
Simon Baker reports:
Another great Heathside turnout for the last competitive club race (there is a Sunday league race next week). Numbers normally dip for this race as people prepare for Christmas but the racing remained as keen as ever. Uxbridge is a bit of a novelty course with a mix of playing fields, ski slope and river crossing. Saturday saw a biting cold wind add to the mix although there was only limited mud on the course and the River Pinn was a mere 20cm deep.
Junior numbers especially the boys were down, many having to make the choice between running or football. The U11 Boys saw two Joshua and Alex finish 12th and 26th respectively. In the girls race Edith Deakin who has been ever present this season secured 10th with Verity 22nd, both are U10 so young for this age group. Ennio Kaloukain in his first Met League race was our sole U13 Boy finishing a solid 27th as he recovers from injury. The U13 Girls however managed a whole team. Running as a pack Rosa Cormacain was in 10th place until she was sent the wrong way by a marshal just before the finish and ended in 12th place just behind Lila Blustin. They were soon followed by Maya Westagate in 16th and Reke Szentes 21st to secure 2nd place and consolidated 2nd place overall only two points behind Woodford.
The Junior Races saw six runners with George Saint and Alex Smith first home followed by two U15s Pheonix Bonhole and Ben Ryan with Artie 1 place behind and Archie Evans completing the Heathsiders. The Junior Women were without any of our U17 runners but such is the talent of the U15 Girls they still managed to finish 2nd with gutsty runs from Amy and Kiara in 12th and 13th places Ishanna was 20th and Ivy 30th. They remain 1st overall in the age group tied with Woodford.
The senior womens race demonstrated the club’s depth of talent. This was the first time the race was not won by a Heathside woman since January 2020 but despite TVH having the 1st 2 runners home Rebecca, Olivia and Josie had packed well running together taking 4-6th places. TVH ‘s next runner was 10th and then 12th swinging the race in their favour again but Nicola then finished 15th followed by Genevieve in 19th and our last scoring runner Olivia Lukasewich crossed the line in 25th and with the next TVH runner in 42nd the Senior women won their 2nd Met League race of the season and now have a buffer of 98 pts over 2nd team VPH&TH in the overall standings.
The Senior Mens race spread out very quickly with Highgate s Alex Lepretre setting a fast pace from the off. Seyfu dug in and comfortably finished the race in 4th with George Gurney and Joseph Young in the top 15. Jem O Flaherty was 22nd and Oliver O Connor 26th but the 1st U20. The remaining scorers came in between 44 and 93rd places to finish in 4th places just 1 behind 3rd placed VP&TH. Sion Lewis and Martin Potter were both 1st in their age groups. Overall the SM remain in 3rd place.

Lee Valley December Open, Lee Valley, Sunday December 4
Simon Baker reports: The Indoor season kicked off last weekend on the newly laid indoor track at Lee Valley and our Young Athletes carried on from the summer setting three new club records and many achieving entry standards for the National Indoor Championships in Sheffield at their first attempt.
Among a host of great performances Magdeline Paitoo set a new U17W 300m record breaking Jayed Mayes 15-year-old record by 0.11s and also just missed by 100th of a second breaking Lily Beckford's indoor 300m record. Imani Quamina improved her own 60mH club record. Oscar Hall also set a new U17M indoor 300m record in his first race over the distance breaking Rufus Tansey's former mark by 0.06s. Malakai David McKenzie Callum on his first indoor races also set a spectacular 60m of 7.51s which would rank him 25th U15B in the UK this year.
This is testament to the hard work they have put in over the autumn with coaches Israel and Mary we look forward to what looks like will be a spectacular indoor season.

Valencia Marathon, Sunday December 4, Valencia, Spain
Twelve Heathsiders ran in this fast, flat marathon and seven of them beat the three-hour mark, four beating the 2:50 hour mark. First home was Jose Sabroso Oliete in a PB time of 2:44:27 despite running with a cold, followed by Thomas Stottor in 2:44:56. Rebecca Bunting was next in 2:45:31 – just eight weeks after running the 50k event for Great Britain. Graham Wilkinson was next in 2:49:56 followed by our second woman, Annabel Arnold, in 2:55:04. Valentin Valeanu went under the three-hour mark for the first time, beating his PB by more than eight minutes in a time of 2:58:17 and Marcus Brown in 2:58:25 – his third sub-3 in 11 weeks.
Jose Sabroso Oliete reports it was a ‘great weekend: ‘We had perfect weather conditions and an extremely flat route. I’ll shake out with Valentin V on Saturday! Loved the fact I greeted many Heathsiders mid race. Personally I managed to do a 2:44:27 (PB) despite the fact I caught a cold few days before the race and as I said to some of my fellow Heathsiders: “It was epic!” Now, a bit of rest and keep running.’
Rebecca Bunting reports: ‘It didn’t go quite as hoped for me but to be disappointed with 2.45, which would have been a PB earlier this year, isn’t right. This was my 3rd marathon-plus this year and only eight weeks after the 50k. It’s now time for nice big rest (and to look after my lower back, which has coped so well). So grateful. I’ve loved all the training miles from the three big builds this year. You can’t be full of beans at every race. Patience, Rest and recover. The running community is lovely. Thanks and well done to Tina Berman and Julia Kelk for a great marathon weekend.’
