Heathside women win Met League - 5th time in a row
The highlight of the week was the victory by Heathside’s women in the Met League for the fifth consecutive year – and Rebecca Piggott, who anchored our team in the final event at Trent Park, won second place overall in the individual rankings. Our rapidly-improving men’s team came second overall, with the vets team taking first place on the day and second overall. Seyfu Jamaal won the men’s individual title. Our U13 girls also came second overall. Meanwhile at the National Junior Indoor Championships in Sheffield U17 Magdeline Paitoo took the bronze medal in a club-record-breaking PB time of 40.94 and Suraya Frost Suraya Frost picked up a new club record and PB in the U15G 60m hurdles in a time of 9.46. Also, Callum Coleman broke his PB by 80 seconds, finishing in 33:38 at the Battersea Park 10k.
Met League 5, Trent Park, February 11 2023
Simon Baker reports on the juniors:
With the Cross-Country Season now coming to a close it was great to see another great turnout of young athletes despite the start of half term. There were no age group wins but the U13 Girls and Junior Women teams were 2nd. Individually top ten finishes were recorded by Rosa Cormacain (U13G)Amy Kirk, Hattie Munday and Kiara Corkin (Junior Women) and George Saint (Junior Men).
This was enough for the U13 Girls to secure 2nd overall and for our Junior Women who were predominantly U15’s win the age group anchored in particular by Amy Kirk, Hattie Munday and Kiara Corkin. However there have been great performances across the age groups with many running in their first season. The club finished 3rd in the Howard Williams Trophy matching last year’s efforts.
Lenny Martin reports on the seniors:
Our first visit to Trent Park for a Met league since 2020 on Saturday was a hugely successful one. Despite some worries earlier in the week that the women's team may be vulnerable at the top of the league due to a number of injuries or people having arranged their wedding for that day (congratulations Olivia!), the team led by ever-presents Rebecca Piggott and Lily Woolcock did enough to finish third in the fixture and secure a 5th consecutive league title by nearly 100 points. Rebecca also secured 2nd place in the overall individual rankings, with Lily just behind in 6th.
The women's B team finished the season in a strong 8th position in division 1 and continue to contribute enormously to the overall success in that division. The C team ended in 9th place in division 2.
There were also fine performances for our rapidly developing men's squad who had one of their best results in memory to push Highgate hard for the fixture win. They finished 2nd in the fixture, but placing all 12 scoring runners within the top 70 offers great encouragement for coming seasons.
Having already done enough in the first four fixtures to secure the individual title, Seyfu Jamaal added a prestigious gold star to his honours for the season by finishing 3rd this time. Joseph Young also claimed 8th place in his debut Met League season with Heathside.
The men's B team also had a fine fixture, doing enough to climb out of the division 1 relegation zone and finish in 10th place. The C team finished in 8th place in division 2.
The combined success of the men's and women's teams also meant that Heathside finished top of the Howard Williams Trophy standings for best overall club in the senior age groups for the first time - a fitting reward for the consistent excellence all of our teams have shown this year.
There was heartbreak for the men's vet team though - announced as league winners at the end of season presentation, a later correction in the results had them bumped down to 2nd place. Consolation was available in the form of an individual title for Sion Lewis as best veteran man over the season.
There were 28 women and 101 men represented the club in the senior races this year, including the following 15 runners who completed every fixture to earn a coveted gold star:
Rebecca Piggott
Lily Woolcock
Jennifer Wing
Lorna Stevenson
Seyfu Jamaal
Matthew Wheat
Adam Mitchell
Chris Hartley
Liam Hazelton
Rob Shulman
Kris Milovsorov
Pete Crockford
Andrew Owen
Russell Weston
Jerome Boughton Mills
Special mention also to Bob Gould who raced just a few days after celebrating his 80th birthday. Thanks to all those who have given their time to contribute to another fantastically successful season.

England Athletics Junior Indoor Championship, Sheffield, February 11
Simon Baker reports:
A fantastic weekend of performances from the Club’s young athletes at the national indoor championships over the weekend. 4 New club records and a bronze medal for Magdeline Paitoo in the U15G 300m. Magdeline negotiated three rounds before holding her position to secure bronze in the final and in the process broke Lily Beckford’s 10-year-old record. To give this context Lily went on to represent Great Britain at 400m. This is also Magdeline and Ella Burridge’s first year competing as an U17W. Malakai David McKenzie Callum took part in two events making the final of the 60mH and finished 4th in the final despite hitting he first hurdle. Not bad for someone who doesn’t specialise in this event. Suraya Frost also returned to form recording two PB’s and a new club record reaching the semi-finals in the U15G 60mH. Well done all the athletes and coaches Mary, Israel and Tony.

Bramley 20-mile, Bramley, February 12
Gavin Evans reports: The Bramley 20 (and 10) returned this year after four years (Covid and weather cancelations). This year it was run under perfect weather conditions. It’s a two-lap countryside course, with the second half of each lap containing almost all the hills. It serves as a good starter-pack preparation for Spring marathons – and a more scenic 20 than the Hillingdon four-lapper. The only thing to watch out for is that you can be tempted to keep pace with 10-milers who start at the same time, so you need to avoid being pulled along by them.
I still had a touch of Watford Half in my legs, so I took it more cautiously than usual, trying to maintain three-hour marathon pace. I was a bit off in the end, finishing in 2:19:19, which although a new club V60 record was a PW on this course.
Result (373 finishers)
57th Gavin Evans – 2:19:19 (3rd V60 and club record).
Parkruns
The Met League meant a diminished field of Parkrunners on Saturday with 52 or our members taking part in 20 races. There were first places for Chris Vincent in Ford (19:32) and Marc Pujol Farres in Mousettte (27:38). Full Heathside results are here
