1-2 at Chingford League, Watford Half, Cian medals in Scotland and Junior XC on Hampstead Heath

A bit of everything this week with Road races, cross country and track action. Sarah Swinhoe broke the V50 womens half marathon record Seyfu and Raoul had a 1-2 at the Watford Half Marathon and the club hosted a successful NWLL young athletes Cross Country at the Hampstead Heath Extension. Cian O’Donnell continued his indoor season with Bronze in the Indoor Scottish Championships.

Watford Half Marathon, Watford, February 5

Fifteen Heathsiders ran the hilly Watford Half in perfect conditions on Sunday.

First home was Tom Livermore in 1:16:41, just two minutes shy of his PB, which is impressive on such a grueling course. He was followed by Peter Gould (1:17:32) and Garath Creagh (1:17:52).

Our first woman was Sarah Swinhoe who broke the club V50 record in a time of 1:29:03 – and would have been quicker if not for an unscheduled stop along the way.  Sarah was second in her age group, as was Paul Beale among the V50 men (1:22:16) and Gavin Evans among the V60 men (1:27:49).

The fifth Heathsider was Marcus Brown (an impressive PB of 1:22:48) followed by Chris Hartley (1:24:06), who was the third V50. The second woman was Gavriella Simson who ran a two-and-a-half minute PB in 1:42:15.

Deng Akol had a splendid run, going out fast as usual but this time maintaining the pace, to deliver a PB in a time of 1:25:47. Another who had reason to be pleased with his performance was Dominic Jackson, whose time of 1:27:58 was a big improvement on his performance in the flatter Big Half. The 11th Heathsider to get under 1:30 was Matthew Cartledge in 1:29:26.

Chingford League 60th Anniversary 5 Miles,

A fine 1-2 for Seyfu and Raoul on a bright, cool and fairly still morning, ideal for fast, flat racing. The sixth and final League race of the season, with the separate 4x1.8km XC relays to come on 11th March. Team-wise both men and women will stay in Division 2 as scoring numbers have been too low other than in this race and the Fraternity/Sorority Cup. Individual-wise, with best 5 performances counting, Sue should have done enough yesterday to be sure of second WV60 for the season, and I’ve done enough to retain my MV60 title, though it’s been much tougher with all these pesky young 60 and 61 yr olds!

NORTH WEST LONDON YOUNG ATHLETES CC. LGE, Hampstead Heath Extension, NW11,. 4.2.23

The Club hosted the 4th NWLL meeting of the season on the Hampstead Heath Extension. Only the 2nd time we have held a race here and it appeared a hit with a great mix of open running and woodland sections. Our efforts marking the course ensured all the races ran the correct course. It was great to see so many young athletes particularly U11s enjoying their running.

No team or individual wins but U11 Boys, U13 Girls and U15 Girls all finished 2nd with U11 Girls 3rd. Best individual performances were Rosa Cormacain (U13G) and Hattie Munday (U17W).

Thank you to all our volunteers who set up and took down the course as well as helped marshall or officiate.
