Heathsiders climb mountains (literally) and SAL promotion push gathers momentum

As this unusual thing called ‘Summer’ sticks around for an unexpectedly long time, it was another hectic week of running, cycling and swimming for Heathsiders who were busy making hay while the sun quite literally shines. The main highlights were another thumping win in the 4th Southern Athletics League fixture from our ‘home’ meet at Parliament Hill, bringing a possible promotion to Division 2 within touching distance and our very own Club Championships (Part 2), with the ever popular 1500 and other running, jumping and spear chucking fun. Elsewhere, there are not one but two reports sent in from the Alps, news from triathlons in the slightly less glamorous Milton Keynes, a deceptively tough 10k closer to home in Bushey, the monthly Regent’s Park 10k, some Self Transcendence (still not sure what that is) at Battersea and the usual haul of good parkrun form.

Now on to the reports:

Southern Athletics League #4, Parliament Hill

As mentioned above, this was a hugely successful afternoon on a gloriously sunny day over the Heath. Heathside finished top of the pile and put ourselves in with a great chance of promotion.

Big thanks to Dan McKeown for providing a write up and and full blown list of results here: http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/sal4parleyhill.htm

Club Championships Part 2, Finsbury Park

A blustery day and heavy wind down the back straight may have given everyone something extra to contend with but this was another another extremely well attended and fun evening that showed off much of what is best about Heathside. On the track there were a couple of standout performances including PBs for Ryan McCrickerd, Amar Aiyar-Majeed and Kris Milovsorov in the 1500m (apologies for any others missed), what looks like an under-13 club record for Ruauri McGonagle in the same event and the slightly odd sight of one of the heats being worn by someone in a Mornington Chasers vest.

Moins Hard, Les Alpes, France

Rachel Newstead emailed in with news of what sounds like the most arduous running of the week as she ran the Moins Hard, part of a series of races in the 7th edition of La Montagn’Hard. She writes: ‘"Moins Hard" is relative in the Alps; it was 38km distance and 3400m ascent. I finished in around 7 and a quarter hours. I probably finished around middle of the pack, but a good two hours after the winning guy! It was very hot, very hard but amazing views and a lot of fun. I recommend it!’ Now the results are out, it was confirmed Rachel finished in 38th place (5th woman) out of 176 finishers in a very impressive time of 7:16:53. Reading up on the race, I came across this video from this thoroughly miserable looking contenstant, which gives an impression of just how picturesque it must have been (caution, video contains Coldplay: https://vimeo.com/132819938)

La Marmotte Cyclosportive, Bourg d’Oisans – Alpe d’Huez, France

Staying in the Alps (not often you write that in a race report), Elinor East writes in to let us know about her epic cycle from this famous mountain race: ‘Not a race as such more of a huge challenge! I was signed up for the mini marmotte which consisted of 2 mountain climbs over 91kms, didn't seem too bad...but on arrival realised the 'mini' event was 80ks from where we were staying so without a choice in the matter or a second thought, I had to 'man up'  and get on with it!

The Marmotte consists of 170 kms of cycling mainly up mountains, (5000 metres clocked by the garmin) in the Alps finishing with the inaugural Alps D'uez! It was a scorching 42 degrees. I managed it in 11:17. Didn't see many women on the course, and have no idea how I faired as the results page doesn't seem to break it down in gender! Awesome race, beautiful scenery but most definitely the hardest event I've ever done!

Bushey 10k, Hertfordshire

A little closer to home now and Robert Bowler let us know about a well earned PB from one of his local events: ‘This was billed as a fast, flat 10k....until just before the start the announced declared a new course! A little windy, twisty thing with a few up and down slopes. Not as flat and fast as I had hoped. My official chip time was 44.19 a PB, by 1 second, by I'm still claiming it!’ Looking through the results, fellow Heathsider Andrew Conway also took part, finishing in 55:50.

The Cowman Triathlon, Milton Keynes

Moving on to a triathlon now, as Gavin Evans sends us this report:‘Jane Higgins and I travelled to glorious Milton Keynes for the Cowman middle distance event (a half Iron’man’ plus an extra 2km on the cycle). For Jane it was an extremely promising triumph. For me, ugh, rather less so.

Jane came second in her spritely age group (30 – 34) in a time of 5:34.45. Her months of injury-prompted cross-training paid off as she shone in all three disciplines. Despite being buffeted and battered for several minutes during the 22-degree lake swim (a single start with 271 people), she completed the two-lap 1.9kms in 42.10. Her 92 km cycle (over a three-lap, undulating course) was even more impressive – 3:07.09, despite being slowed down by two unscheduled traffic stops. And she finished in fine style, completing the four lap, undulating cross country half-marathon, in baking heat, in 1:41.36, and passing just about everyone along the way. She’s off next weekend for a marathon run-swim-run-swim-run-swim etc. event in the cold Alpine lakes of Switzerland and is also talking about the full 226 (otherwise known by the crap name chosen by that money-grabbing company – an ‘Ironman’).

I had rather less success –a minute slower than last year (which seems to be the way things go these days). I started with a truly pathetic swim, made even tardier by several stops to clear my totally misted-up goggles). That was followed by a ridiculously long transition as I put on socks, gloves and an extra pair of cycle shorts, which did not much to prevent a serious pain-in-the-arse (and surrounding zones). Then on the run I had to stop to extract a sharp stone which penetrated my race shoes, socks and skin, but in the end, my run time of 1:27.09 was a huge six seconds faster than last year, which was a little bit of consolation for an otherwise dire performance. Oh well. There’s always next year.

Junior Aquathon, Crystal Palace

Pete Crockford let us know about daughter Phoebe Crockford’s debut for Haringey Borough in this event, which sees athletes completing a 300m swim and a 2km run. Phoebe finished in a very promising time of 15:33 (including 8th fastest run).

Regents Park 10k Summer Series

Some quick times posted here by Heathsiders as Dan Madams and Adam Mitchell finished within a few seconds of each other in 5th and 6th positions. Elliot Reed also turned out and finished in 44:49.

Self Transcendence 5k and 10k, Battersea Park

Michael Abrahams posted a season’s best time on Monday at the regular Battersea Park event as he finished 62nd in 19:58 while Joanne Dennehy also ran, finishing 115th in a time of 23:56. A couple of days earlier on Saturday, Isobel Rae posted a PB time of 38:16, finishing in 17th place as 3rd woman.

Parkruns, Saturday 4th July

Ryan McCrickerd was first finisher at Hampstead Heath for the 3rd week in a row, and while Andrew Dunderdale ran a good time in Glasgow, Victoria Phillips beats him to the prize of most far flung destination of the week by checking in from Cairns, Australia.
