Heathside’s SAL home base triumph
The big news of the weekend is that we won our SAL Division 2 meeting on our Finsbury Park home base - and it was a wonderfully well-organised event, thanks to Jonathan Litchfield and his team.
With more than 50 volunteers, on a balmy day, everything went smoothly and on-time and we delivered a day to be proud of. Aside from Jonathan Litchfield, several other volunteers stood out for their contributions including meeting manager Dave Walton (who puts in hundreds of hours into the track and everything surrounding it), track referee Jerry Odlin, marksman Pete Holland, starter Ivor Wiggett, photo finish wiz Jake Spencer, ground staff head Chris Hartley, recorder Steve Woolf, café manager Therese McGonagle, announcer Sue Rust and gadflies Kabir Kemp and John Flahive, among so many others.
SAL Finsbury Park, Saturday 8 July
On the track and on the field Heathside excelled, helped by the fact that we put up athletes in every event. We came first in our group of four with 214.5 points, followed by Ipswich Harriers with 196, Bexley AX with 186.5 and Medway & Maidstone with 171.
It’s hard to pick out highlights because there were so many outstanding performances, but I’ll choose a few that really impressed me. Among the men:
Jimmy Thoronka won the 100m in 10.89 – 0.42 ahead of the Ipswich second placer. Jimmy also blitzed the 200 a 22.43 first place and was part of the men’s winning 4x100 relay squad (45.03). He also came second in the javelin. Jimmy shared the Man of the Match award for his 100m run.
Liam Garrett, at the age of 15, ran a superb 1500, winning the B category and coming fourth overall in a time of 4:15.32, while his club rival Jem O’Flaherty (also U17) came an excellent third in a the huge 3000m in a time of 9:20.41.
James Woodridge was second in the 1500 (4:07.24), third in the 800m (2:01.26) and also anchored us in the 4 x400m relay.
Ivan Ross, a V40, did more than keep up with the youngsters – fourth in the 100m hurdles, fourth in the 400m hurdles, fourth in the high jump and second in the B pole vault and he also competed in the triple jump.
Another whose devotion to duty helped us win was Nathan Cyrus – third in the pole vault, second in the triple jump, second in the shot putt, third in the discus, second in the B event of the 110m hurdles and part of the winning 100m relay team.
And among the women:
Lauren Hendry put in a huge shift. She won the 100m hurdles (18.89), won the 400 m hurdles by more than 10 seconds (74.82), came second in the triple jump, third in the 100m B race, second in the B javelin, second in the long jump B event. She also competed in the shot putt and helped put Heathside into second place in the 4 x100 relay.
Noelle O’Regan was another who went well beyond the call of duty. Our women's captain won the B race in the 400, came fourth in the 100m and the 200m, first in the B race of the 400, second in the shot putt, second in the discus, third in the hammer and still had enough in her legs to lead Heathside to victory in the 4 x 400m relay.
That relay squad deserve special mention. The young Conlon sisters, Ella and Naomi, put us into a big lead, both running beautifully. This was consolidated by Rosa Serafini with Noelle closing the show to take us to the tape 4.47 seconds ahead of the Bexley team. Ella also ran in the individual 800 and Naomi in the 400.
Rosa Serafini ran three outstanding races. She won the 400 in 60.89, won the 800 in 2:18.86 (in a wonderful race with v 35 Ula Cartwright-Finch - 2:21.06) and was part of the winning 4x400 relay team. Rosa and Ula shared the Women of the Match awards for their 800m runs.
Jennifer Wing showed excellent technique in winning the 1500 steeplechase in 6:14.52. It was a pleasure to see her sailing over those hurdles, when everyone else climbed. Jen also featured in the high jump, winning the B event (third overall) and ran in the 800m and the 100m.
Bethany Scott and Kelly Thorneycroft dominated the longer runs. Beth loped her way to winning her first-ever 5000 in 19:25.25, with Leigh James in second place. Soon after she took her tired legs to the 1500 where she came second to Kelly, whose time was 4:56.53.
One more who competed tirelessly was V35 Giulia Ariete. She came second in the pole vault, third in the long jump, first in the B event of the 100m hurdles second in the Triple jump B event, and ran in the 100m

And here’s the report on our women’s captain, Noelle O’Regan, on the non-running and jumping side of the event:
‘The last time we had a home match at Finsbury Park, some of the members who competed yesterday had not even been born. Hosting a match is not simply a matter of inviting people along and hoping it will all go well. A huge amount of preparation went into yesterday’s match in the weeks and months up to the event and on the day. This was all done by an army of red/blue/gold Heathside volunteers, whom we are lucky to have, who made yesterday a success, and who are therefore the focus of this month’s SAL report. This army helped secure a massive win alongside dominant athletic performances in all disciplines.
‘Below is a full list of those who helped out – in total, I think we had 50+ volunteers. In fact, there were probably more because many volunteered sporadically on the day. I just want to highlight a few names that stood out.
‘Some of us had our doubts that this match would be possible at FP, because of the Wireless Festival clash. But Dave Walton, among others, knew we could make it a success and pushed to have this match at home rather than at another venue. In the months leading up to the match, Dave did all he could to ensure the track was competition-ready.
‘John Flahive spent many hours communicating with Haringey council in the months before the match to sort out parking permits for visiting clubs on the match day, due to the unfortunate clash with the Wireless festival. This intensified in the week of the match, during which he spent 24/7 on the phone to the council. Finally, on the day of the match, he spent all morning on his bike zooming round the park sorting out last minute parking requests. Without this effort, the entire day could have been a huge disaster.
‘Chris Hartley, as Chair of the track committee, probably had quite a few sleepless nights worrying about whether it would all work out. But his excellent leadership skills got our committee to work together and prepare well in advance for anything that could go wrong. In the end, this preparation meant that the day ran smoothly and to time. As Chris ran round the track with a hurdle measuring stick, his grounds staff ensured that the track and field were ready for each event.
‘On the men’s side, Team Cap’n Tony did not have the easiest time coordinating the many many Heathside men wanting to run 3000m, and pulled together a winning team with many new faces, while simultaneously recruiting future prospects among the numerous non-scorers. The women’s made their team captain’s life very easy by simply destroying the competition and jumping into new events when needed.
‘The coaches always deserve a special mention – they voluntarily give up their time to train our athletes for competition. Many thanks to Mike, Mark, Chris, Kabir, Jacob, Nathan, Ruth and Zac.
‘Finally, Jonathan Litchfield, Officials Organiser Extraordinaire, pulled together the fleet that you see below, and coordinated a very intricate schedule to ensure that every possible role needed to make a match a success was filled. Thanks to everyone for a fantastic match. Let this be the start of many more home matches.

Southern Counties Veterans' League Herts & North Middx Division, Hemel Hempstead, Monday July 10
Here are the full results of Monday’s meeting - http://www.thepowerof10.info/results/results.aspx?meetingid=200398
And here is Adrian Essex’s report on the whole veterans’ season:
‘On Monday night (July 10th) we tied for the win in the final match giving us 8.5 league points on the night taking us to 29 in total. The second team got 28.5. So we will be invited to the Southern Counties final in Ashford in September.
‘And this from a team that didn't really realise it was doing well - just sort of turning out on a Monday evening. Well, perhaps the 4 x 200 meter relay team (Ivan, Tony, Jonathan Hopkins and Ed) was really trying, especially Ed who needed to impress young Liam on the timekeeper's stand, and first instead of second in a race in a match where every point counts. One point fewer on the night and we would not have won the league, so all those dodgy decisions to compete despite the niggles can be justified. A superb climax to a very good season.
‘Zac did say after the event that next season he will be paying attention to the women’s team. Beware. This season a small but select group of women have consistently not come last in every match, despite overwhelming odds. Jessica and Helene were present at every event, backed up by Sue and Ruth.’
JBM Corporate Challenge, Battersea Park, Wednesday July 5
Sion Lewis put in a PB for this annual 5.6km (3.5m) dash, with an eye-catching time of 19:42. He followed this up on Saturday with a 9:45 pb in the 3000 in our SAL event.
Lee Valley White Water Centre Aquathlon, Tuesday July 4
Sue Eedle was back in the Lee Valley on Tuesday night for her third (but first this year) in the Lee Valley White Water Centre 2017 aquathlon series.
Here’s her report: ‘I did the short course -- single lap of the lake + 3k run -- in a decent (for me) 24:04. First F50 (out of three!). Glorious sunny evening, water temperature 22°C... Next one is on August 1, two-lap swim + 5.5k also available, highly recommended.’

No Parkruns in Finsbury Park or Ally Pally last Saturday, but, still, 33 of our runners competed in 19 Parkruns, with a very impressive first place at the Harkney Marshes event for Elidh Wagstaff in a pb of 19:19.
