Middlesex Young Athletes, Grindelwald and the Handicap
The highlights this week include the Middlesex Young Athletes League, an Ultra from Switzerland and the annual club handicap.
Middlesex Young Athletes league
There were some great performances at the Middlesex Young Athletes League this week. Notable performances include those of Imani Quamina (U11 Girls 150m), Hattie Munday (U11 girls 800m), Javahn Robinson-Leitao (Boys U11 150m), as well as several others who came first in their disciplines. Heathside now lies 3rd overall in the league out of 9 teams.
Eiger Ultra Trail, 15th July 2017
Lenny Martin sends the following report from an epic race in Switzerland: “I was in Grindelwald in Switzerland at the weekend for the Eiger Ultra Trail weekend, and racing in the 35km event. A truly spectacular course took in 2,600m of climbing, and included a traverse of the foot of the Eiger North Face. I finished in 5 hours 27 minutes, for 82nd place from 461 finishers.”
Harry Hawkes 10
Three Heathsiders went south of the river to run in the Harry Hawkes 10. Tom Bedwell led the trio home in 1:14, followed by Lucie Mauger (1:17:24) and Laura Boothman (1:42:42). For Laura, it was another 10 miler ticked off in her quest for 10X10 miles in a year. She comments that it was a nice course, despite being flat and not muddy, with a great atmosphere and very humid.

We managed to squeeze our annual handicap race in before the thunderstorms arrived, but not, alas, before considerable disruption on the Northern Line accounted for a number of the competitors. A few who did arrive reported having to warm up by hot-footing it from Camden.
At 7:30PM this year's 'hares', Jerry Odlin and Alison Harrow set off into the woods, followed in dribs and drabs by the rest of the field until the last runner, Andy Barnes, took off almost 10 minutes later.
Jerry held onto his lead for about 4K, before Tom Hosking motored past him on his way to overall victory in an adjusted time of 15:26. Filipe Cardoso followed and Alice Hosking scuttled past in the final straight, claiming the ladies' trophy and the fastest woman prize (adjusted time 16:08, net time 20:38).
I'm not sure if this is the first time a married couple have scooped the prizes at one of our club races, but I'm going to guess, probably? Watch out for them next year when they get sent off joint-last as a three-legged race team.
Other notable runs were Andy Barnes, who caught and passed over half the field on his way to the fastest male prize (17:18), Simon Brown (17:45) was fastest male vet for the second year in a row, so he clearly isn't getting any slower (or younger), while Tom Fancett (17:28) ran the fastest debut time.
For the women, Sif Sumarlidadottir (21:26) was our fastest vet, while Magdalena Kopalova (24:51) recorded the fastest debut time.
As ever, very few entrants were over-optimistic with their time predictions. However, there was a new prize for this year for the most accurate time prediction, which was won by Andrew Prystawsky (he charges by the letter) who ran *exactly* 20 minutes, *exactly* as he had predicted.
My warmest thanks to everyone who took part and most especially to everyone who volunteered on the evening or helped otherwise in organising the event.
In particular, a special thanks to Steve Woolf for organising the event for the last however many years (a lot, basically) and his invaluable assistance and guidance this time.
Parkruns
Many ran in parkruns last Saturday. Congratulations for first place finishes go to Charles Hardy (Grovelands. 17:05), Andy Barnes (Highbury Fields, 17:37) and Andy Welshman (Belton House, 18:56). Results are here: http://www.parkrun.com/results/consolidatedclub/?clubNum=2017&eventdate=2017-07-15
