Cape Wrath 400k Ultra, Fort William to Cape Wrath, finished Sunday May 28.

An exhausted, but satisfied Lenny Martin sent this report after starting to recover from his 400k off-road, up-mountain ordeal:

I took part in the Cape Wrath Ultra, covering 400km (250 miles) of the north west of Scotland starting in Fort William and heading north to Cape Wrath Lighthouse - the farthest northwest point of mainland Britain - over eight days of running, taking in approximately 14,000m of climbing along the way.

Alongside 172 other runners hoping to complete the journey, we set off last Sunday morning for a relatively easy 37km first stage. This was followed by 6 days in wild and rugged country, going over high mountain passes, through deep bogs and rivers, and across rocky heather and peat moorland on stages ranging from an apparently modest (but still tough, thanks to the trackless terrain in Torridon) 35km, to an intimidating 72km on day six.

We were treated to the full range of weather that the west of Scotland has to offer, with day four in particular ranging from needing multiple warm layers and full waterproofs in the morning, to being beaten by sweltering sunshine in the afternoon.

By the following Sunday we were within a stone's throw of Cape Wrath, with only an apparently ceremonial final stage of 24km to go to reach the lighthouse, but this still had a sting in the tail with the final 10km all being on heavily undulating, and totally pathless, bog and moorland.

Eventually 88 of the runners who set out completed the full course, of which I ranked 61st, although I will admit to having given little thought to finish times or rankings through the week, being focussed only on making it to the finish as well as I could.

It was a privilege to be able to experience some truly incredible scenery along the way, and to visit some of the UK's most remote and wildest places, many of which are completely inaccessible other than by a long journey on foot, and despite the many challenges that the week presented it was a wonderful experience that will stay in the memory for a very long time.

Edinburgh Marathon, Sunday May 28

Jacob Howe reports that Kader Seyed ran magnificently to finish 5th in 2:28:42 - a big PB – to improve his club U20 record, go top of the UK U20 marathon rankings, and run the fastest Heathside marathon so far this year. It is worth noting that Kader competed in the SAL on May 20 including leading off the 4 x 100 relay (as well as running in the 1500 and 3000) Perhaps that's the secret to marathon success?

Hackney Half Marathon, Sunday May 21

If you were wondering why there were no reports or results from the Hackney Half last week, well, they are still not up on Power of 10 and the event organisers have not included the club affiliation of the more than 20,000 runners who took part and no Heathsiders have sent in reports or results. Watching the event on my Sunday run, it seemed like there were at least 10 club members were in the field. The first I spotted was Tom Livermore, whose time was 1:16:54 – a fine time for a warm and sunny day. The official results can be found here

Parkruns

What may be a record number of Heathsiders (91 in 40 races) took part in Parkruns on Saturday. There were wins for Olivia Desborough in Highbury Fields (18:26), Peter Gould in Ally Pally (17:30) Lily Woolcock (20:27) and Johnny Forsyth (17:35) in Finsbury Park and Amy Cook in Hampstead Heath(21:54). Full Heathside results are here.

Report by Gavin Evans with thanks to Simon Baker, Lenny Martin, Jacob Howe and James Hurrell.
