Lawrence makes his Mark at the SAL
Saturday saw our home SAL match at Lee Valley. The weather may have been a bit overcast but our spirits were high.
Thanks to super organisation from Noëlle and Tony, both the women’s and men’s teams covered all the events, with numerous non-scorers acting as the icing on the cake. Thanks also to those who often get mentioned at the end of the report: the officials and coaches. That’s Jacob and Angela, Kabir, Takis, Suzette, Ben, John F, Jonathan L, Jessica, Ed, Chris, Nathan, Mark, Mike, Ivor, Steve and Pete, plus announcer extraordinaire Claire. Next, thanks to Anne-Christine, our wonderful multi-eventer, and the lovely Dr. Bergit, both of whom flew in from Germany to come to our aid.
The long distance group’s contribution, co-ordinated by Noëlle and Jacob, was outstanding, yet again bringing in great results. Our promotion to the second division and very steady performance here is directly due to our ongoing cooperation between all the groups involved, so let’s celebrate that team spirit! The sprinters certainly had a good day, the warmer weather bringing in lots of success for scorers and non-scorers alike. The relay teams got us all a bit excited and did us very proud; the performance of the women’s 4 x 400 m relay in particular was outstanding. We had very consistent hurdling results; these are events where we can get lots of points by filling both strings where other clubs leave gaps.
The jumpers were all in flying form, as were the pole vaulters. A special mention to Mark, our jumps coach, who broke the 16-year V40 club record for long jump, with a very lengthy 6.23 m. The throwers were also showing their strength in an area we hope to develop in the future, and we invite more athletes to have a go at future meetings.
Jaime Rodríguez García took some great photos which are up on Facebook, so check those out.
Welcome back to the SAL to Adrian ‘the legend’ Essex, we missed you!
Finally, Andy Barnes ran his first track race and Chris Gray got outstanding 100 m and 200 m results for his first races ever. We hope to see them at future matches. Antanas Weston jumped in (!) to fill a gap in men’s high jump with a sore foot at very short notice, thus ensuring we had every event filled.
The final result left us just a few points behind Blackheath & Bromley in second place, a result for us all to be very proud of.
The next SAL is on Saturday July 9th at Luton: let’s do it all again!
Results
Blackheath & Bromley: 220
