Self-Trans 5ks, Southern Athletics Champs and loads more

Self-Transcendence 5k races, Battersea Park, Monday 6th and 13th June

Two to report from here. First up on Monday 6th, Richard Macauley was the sole person to sport Heathside colours down at Battersea but he more than made up for that by putting in a great run and finishing 4th with a PB time of 16:21.

A week later, seven speedy Heathsiders turned up to the latest event on Monday and laid down some impressive times round the pancake flat course. First home was Dan Madams with a season’s best 16:33, while James Lynch was next home with a PB time of 17:21. Also registering PBs were Rebecca Sweet and Rebecca Taylor, while Mark George, Mike Abrahams and Gabi Johnson completed the contingent.

Chase the Sun 10k, Hyde Park, Wednesday 8th June

Paul Mercer and Jake Spencer turned out to the latest midweek Chase the Sun event (the name seems to be a cast iron guarantee of complete cloud cover) and had a real battle, finishing 10th and 11th respectively.

South of England Championships, Lee Valley, 11th and 12th June

Coach Jacob reported back on a fine couple of days at Lee Valley: “Lots of good performances at the South of England Championships this weekend, with Steph taking gold in the Long Jump and Adam the silver in the 3000m SC (yet again running a PB and breaking the club record, despite a tumble on the penultimate water jump) in a very high standard event. Jordan Glaze's PB in the 100m equals the best Heathside time with electronic timing and a legal wind reading.  Elsewhere, Leigh James won bronze for 5000m in the Welsh Championships.”

Dame Kelly Holmes Olympic Park 10k, Stratford, Sunday 12th June

Jessica Vinluan continued taking chunks out of her 10k time, with taking another minute off here, finishing as 10th lady with a PB of 43:54.

St Albans 5k, Sunday 12th June

A smaller event run alongside the half marathon, Nick Dodd completed the ‘hilly course around damp grass on Verulamium Park’ and, despite reporting that he was beaten by a number of children, he should nevertheless be chuffed with his PB time of 21:38.

Southern Counties Vets League, Barnet, Monday 13th June

A healthy turn out from Heathside’s bus pass holders (not my words, honest) as Dan Johns, Jonathan Litchfield, Rob Shulman, Ed Garrett, Ivan Ross, Jim Connell and Jessica Vinluan took on a myriad of events from the 100m through to the javelin and whatever the 1600m medley relay is. Some quick times but they’ve not been fully ratified on Po10 yet so can’t praise any PBs. Full results below as usual.

Stafford Ironman 70.3, Sunday 12th June

Sandra Buckton reported back from the midlands with news of how she and two others (Francois Barou and Jonathan Powell) got on in the Stafford Ironman. Apparently they were competing under the banner of Hampstead Tri, but we’ll overlook such transgressions just this once:

“Reports back from those who had taken part last year in the inaugural event, were of chaos, queues and miles of driving and dashing around the countryside trying to get the right kit to the right location due to a split transition. Organisers seem to have taken on board some of the feedback and improved things this year, but it still took me as long to get registered and set up on Saturday as it did to do the race on Sunday. The race started at Chasewater Country Park with a single loop reservoir swim leading to T1. The bike ride took in Cannock Chase AONB, finishing at T2 in Shugborough Estate. With about 800m of climbing, it's reasonably flat but with a few technical challenges. The final run leg was three loops around Shuborough House and Estate and the local villages, where support was amazing.  Mid-morning rain made the bike course a bit hazardous (especially for those on Tri bikes) and parts of the run course reminiscent of Met League, and gave the whole event a rather rural feel!”

Results show that Francois finished a shade outside the top 100 while Sandra was 5th lady in her age group.

Great North Swim, Lake Windermere, Saturday 11th June

Away from the roads completely, Steve Woolf and two others went North in search of Summer:

“Leaving behind a soggy London, Briony Fane and Steve Woolf headed for the warmer weather of the Lake District (yes you did read that right...) for the Great North 1-mile swim, ably supported by Barbara Tomaszczyk as photographer. They've been basking in warm sunshine while London has been shivering in that persistent cold north-easterly. As a result, Windermere, where the latest and biggest of the Great Swim series takes place, was a balmy 20.7C (Highgate ponds were struggling at 15C early last week). They are fantastically well organised events but you have to love your fellow human, especially when they swim on top of you or vice versa at the 'washing machine' start. We both swam in the Saturday 2pm Green wave with 260 others. Overall 3124 people swam the popular 1-mile distance - half-mile, 2-mile, 5K and 10K distances were also available. We both enjoyed it so much that we're already planning next year's excursion and by way of celebration, there were impromptu swims the next day in the beautiful surroundings of Rydal Water and Easedale Tarn. Great weekend!”

Parkruns

Heathside dominated the North London parkrun scene last weekend, with a whopping number of first finishes: Dan Johns at Grovelands; John Driscoll at Hampstead; Tom Aldred and Rebecca Piggott at Finsbury (Alex Galloway and Dan McKeown even made this one a Heathside 1-2-3); Andy Barnes and Cas Wright over at Highbury; and Rebecca Bunting at Ally Pally. Slightly further afield, Claire Miller was first lady at Northala Fields again and Flying Frenchman Olivier Le Poulain romped around Aldenham quicker than an England fan legging it from a Gendarme during EURO 2016.
