London Marathon Weekend - Club Records Smashed and Heathside Ladies Scoop Bronze!
MADNESS! plus Lily Allen, The Kinks, Ralph McTell, Gerry Rafferty - just some of the artistes, to name but a few, who have had hit songs about London, but none of whom (as far as I am aware???) have ever run it - unlike the 48 Heathsiders (at the last count) who started the 35th Virgin Money London Marathon on a fairly cool and drizzly Sunday morning.
So, finally, the Big Day had arrived and all that hard training through the long winter months bore its fruit - though commiserations to those who suffered the disappointment of not being able to take part due to injury or illness (eg. Ken Townson). And commiserations too, to those whose run on the day didn’t go as well as planned/hoped – blisters, little niggles flaring up, a bad night’s sleep, and of course the dreaded cramps, can all conspire to draw out the agony longer than expected!
Charles Prange led the Heathsiders pack, finishing in a PB-shattering 2h43m, with Katy Webster less than a minute behind - our 1st Woman (11th overall, and only 7 minutes behind Paula Radcliffe – I’ve waited longer than that to pay for my organic free-range Quinoa in the checkout queue at Waitrose!) and beating the previous Club Womens’ Marathon record by almost 6 minutes. Chris Hartley’s time of 2h47m sets a new Club MV50 record, breaking the previous record (set in 2012) by over 2 minutes. Ok, so these are the “gold medal” performances by our runners, but a massive congratulations to everyone who pushed themselves for hours to get round the course and cross the Finish Line. Well-done you!
Our first three ladies in were Katy Webster, Rebecca Piggott and Rebecca Bunting and we are told that this means an incredible bronze medal for the club. Congratulations also to Cathy Jeremiah on her sub 3 hour PB.
Regular Facebookers among you will be aware that Gabi Johnson collated and posted a list of people’s predictions re. their finishing times. I’ve had a look and it would appear that we have joint winners/spooky clairvoyants in Cathy Jeremiah and Dave Hellard, who were both only an amazing 12 seconds out in their predictions! “Mystic Meg” aka Louise Atkins takes the “bronze”, being only 22 seconds out in hers.
Full Heathsiders’ Marathon results are listed at end of this report.
NB. Doing a final check on the results on the Marathon website tonight (Wednesday 29th) I’ve noticed that, compared to the printout I took on Monday, many runners’ times (and positions) have changed, albeit only by a few seconds. So, if you want to have another check, here’s the link: http://results-2015.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/2015/
Club members were involved in other races too, including Marathons in Germany and Stratford-upon-Avon. Plus, on Saturday, there was the first fixture of The Sweatshop Southern Athletics League (SAL). A strong Heathside contingent of Men and Womenb travelled to Braintree and achieved 333 points and claim 1st place in their Division (Division 3 North East). A separate report is available on the Club website http://www.londonheathside.org.uk/20150425_sal_braintree.htm
Other races and results from the week, in date order:
16th Maratona Sant’Antonio (Padova, Italy - 19th April)
Having run the full marathon here 8 years ago, I opted for the Half this time round. Weather was warm and sunny (mid-20s), but the course was flat, straight and fast. This, together with smarter use of my HR monitor (keeping an average of 167bpm, compared to 162 in the Fleet Half 4 weeks earlier) helped me knock nearly 5 minutes off my Fleet time, and get a 15 year PB to boot! I also managed to finish nearly 20 minutes ahead of top Kenyan athlete Robert K. Kipkemboi – tho’, to be fair, I suppose I should mention he was actually running the full marathon distance...
772nd Greg Bell 1:50:07 (chip time)
2955 runners (combined total of both Marathon and Half)
