Manchester, Boston and Llanelli Marathons and Thames Towpath 10

As the marathon season is entering the final stretch, triathletes are already planning for triathlon season, dusting down the bikes, shaking out the wetsuits and ramping up the cross discipline training, as this weekend’s racing shows. Races ranged from the Manchester, Llanelli and Boston marathons (and Llanelli half marathon), the Thames Towpath 10, the LICC track events, cyling in Hertfordshire, a 10k relay and vast distances covered in a weekend of swimathons.

Marathons
The Manchester marathon had 6 Heathsiders partaking of the fun, with great times achieved by all. Allan led the group home in an amazing time of 2.50.54, followed by Steve in 2.53 (PB), followed by Stuart, just short of his PB and then Andrew (who knocked 18 minutes off his previous PB to come in in 3.10 which he was delighted at), Caroline Boyle’s excellent time showed all her training paid off well, and Katherine made an impressive debut in her first marathon.

Over in Llanelli in Wales “the London four” as they were known, being the only London representatives, had a great day in Llanelli on the half and full marathon courses. Information was in short supply, but I gather it was a””great course, lightly undulating and scenic”, “a sub-2 hour half by Lyn and excellent marathons from Laura, Jill and Jane. Big PB's from Laura and Jane “.

And further afield in the Boston marathon Jim Connell,Paul Mercer and Simon Hazel had terrific runs with Jim leading the three home in  a time of 2.58.39 followed by Paul in 3.04.04 and Simon in 3.32.

Fullers Thames Towpath 10
There were prizes galore at the Towpath 10, with Andy Barnes coming in third overall and Tammela, Jo and Sandra scooping the Ladies team prize. Here is Tammela’s race report: “About 10 of us non-marathoning Heathsiders ventured down to Chiswick for a brisk run along the river in the aptly named (Fuller's) Thames Towpath 10. The race is advertised as a 'multi-terrain' 10-miler, and multi-terrain it is. Almost half the race is along the gravelly Thames towpath (who'd have thought?!), which made it hard to get into a good rhythm but did keep me on my toes. It was lovely to see rowers gliding along the river down below and others out enjoying the morning. After a few grueling gravelly miles, the terrain changed as we turned off the towpath and onto...a grassy field! 'Just pretend it's cross country', I said to Jo as we ran across. Luckily it hadn't rained so the field was hard. A few middle miles on the pavement were welcome, and then it was back to the towpath for a brief jaunt before the final mile or so.

In battles for the finish, Andy Barnes -- who had cycled down to the race -- came in a solid third overall and was, in his words, '1 second away from winning £50'. I wasn't quite able to catch Robert Bowler in the final yards -- he beat me by 1 second (although results show our chip times as identical). Jo, fresh off the ski slopes, was not far behind me. She, Sandra and I combined to win the ladies' team prize.

The race was well-organised with fantastic marshals and a pretty nice haul of goodies: all participants got a Fuller's pint glass, many of us came away with colourful buffs (some would call them snoods), and winners got a Fuller's coffee mug and a case of Fuller's London Pride (my partner was quite pleased about that). Not bad for a morning's run!”

LICC
The LICC took place at Lee Valley on Sunday with a smallish turnout of Heathsiders, putting in some strong performances - especially Adam Kirk-Smith coming first with a PB in the 800m in a time of 1.58.09, Liam Garrett who came 2nd place in the 400 metres in 63.52, and Ben Wolfe making his track debut.

Clissold Park 10K
A 10K relay was well represented by Heathsiders yesterday, taking place on our local Clissold Park in Stoke Newington – Dan sent this report: “Heathside was out in force at the Clissold Park 10k Relay on Sunday, supplying the winners of the men's and mixed events."The Heathside Rabble" (Fancett, Hellard, Shipley, Walker) led from gun to tape, holding off a late rally from an impressive "Apocalypse Delta Force" team. A youthful "Heathside Gloryboys" side (Phillips, Szajna et al) finished 3rd, after some toing-and-froing with "LHS Jesus Lizards" (McKeown x 2, Higgins, Jeremiah; 4th, 1st mixed team). There was also a heavily Heathside-flavoured "Highbury Hobblers" team (Butler, Alder, Vinluan-Litchfield), a selection of "Tigger" teams out coached by Ali Harrow, and John Flahive appeared for 6th-placed "Karvina".

A couple of honourable mentions: Tom Fancett recorded the quickest time of the day (7:26 for 2.5ish km) and Jonathan Litchfield was part of the 5th-placed "Heroes of Paris" team, all of whom were proudly sporting their finisher T-shirts from last week's marathon.
