The 4th Met League of the season took place on Saturday in Welwyn with impressive results all round – and the Senior Women coming 1st. Met League 4#, Welwyn, 14.1.23
Despite the relentless rain and winds, London Heathside had a superb #4 Met League on Saturday at Welwyn. In a nutshell:
Senior Women - 1st
Junior Women - 2nd
Senior Men - 3rd
U13 Girls - 3rd
Junior Men - 5th
U11 Boys - 5th
U13 Boys - 5th
U11 Girls - 8th
Seyfu Jamaal - 2nd
Here’s Simon’s report on the day’s activities:
The Middlesex Champs having been moved to next weekend the XC returned with the 4th instalment of the Met League. This meeting is also later than normal usually being race 2#. It certainly turned out to be eventful with rain, sunshine, drizzle and runners taking the wrong course or having to pick their way through spectators trying to stay upright on the muddy course.
Seniors
Numbers for the women were down to just 13, however this didn't stop them pretty much guaranteeing the title, with another win built on 3 finishers in the top 10. This race showed the clubs depth of talent with Rebecca Piggot (6th), Olivia Desborough (8th), Lily Woolcock (10th), Nicola Graham, Olivia Lukasewich and Ciara Borg (who crossed the line in 42nd place) making up the A team scorers. Tanya Addison was 3rd V50 and Annabel Judd 4th V55. With one race remaining the team now have a 116 point buffer over 2nd placed VP&TH.
Fifty-two Senior Men turned out, another terrific showing, led from the front by Seyfu who produced a great race to finish 2nd. George Gurney and Joseph Young both had top 20 finishes. Thomas Archer our 4th finisher was 2nd U20 Man with Oliver O'Connor just 1 place behind. Sion Lewis was 2nd V40, Matthew Cockerill 3rd V50, Martin Potter 2nd and Chris Hartley 3rd V55s. The team’s 3rd place on the day has consolidated their overall 3rd place in the league. Fourth placed Harrow are 670 pts behind. making the critical last race, if the Club are to win the overall title and the Howard Williams Trophy, slightly less pressured.
Juniors
Another great turnout from the Juniors with full teams in all races except the U11 Girls and many running in the 1st year of their age category. The Junior Women finished 2nd despite all but Hattie being in their 1st year as U15s. Amy Kirk continued her progress this season with 6th place, followed by Hattie in 7th and Kiara Corkin in 12th, with the scorers completed by Lettice Gundry. Tied on 155 pts with Herts Phoenix and TVH, the places were sorted by count back. The U13 Girls secured 3rd place with good solid running from all, with Kitty Kelsall our first runner home in 12th with Margot Hunt the same time. The U11 Girls were one short but Edith Deakin was again our first runner home in 15th. The Junior Women currently lead the overall league 27 pts ahead of WG&EL.
The Boys did not quite match the girls but again produced a fine collection of runs. Joshua Collins was the first U11 Boy home in 19th place. Rory Willis was the first U13 Boy in 18th place just 5 seconds and 7 seconds ahead of Seb McNeely and Alex Kirk. The Junior Boy’s race was the most eventful of the day with the leader taking the wrong turn and then followed by the field which meant the race was 2,000m shorter than it should be. George Saint was again our first runner home with Eric Beale, back from long term injury, our first U15 Boy.
Well done to all who took part in, at times, awful conditions.
