Met League #4 Welwyn, Hyde Park New Year’s Day 10k, South of England Indoor Champs
It was an exciting racing weekend despite the arctic conditions - the women’s team came home first place in the 4th Met League race of the season, Seyfu won the Hyde Park 10K (which was supposed to have been raced on New Year’s Day but was postponed due to the weather), and there were some impressive results at the South of England U13/U15/U17 indoor championships at Lee Valley.
Met League #4, Welwyn, 11.01.25
Simon Baker reported:
“Another cold day but warmed up by some top notch cross country racing which saw the Senior Women record their first Met League win of the season and the Men record another 3rd place finish. The Junior Women were also 3rd with the U13 Girls and Junior Men both 4th.
In the Young Athletes there were top 10 finishes for Edith Deakin (5th U13G), Lila Blustin (5th U15G), Michael Schofield (9th U11B ), Sam Turner (9th JM) and Kiara Corkin (10th JW). Arguably however the stand out performances were Filip Kounoupas Prastalo was 2nd in the U13 Boys race and Charlie Nicolson 3rd U15 Boy.
The Senior Women's return to form was anchored by Evangelista Divetan who was 7th but soon followed by Jessica Prior, Rebecca Piggott and Lily Woolcock all in the top 15. Josie Hinton (20th) and Francesca Stocco in 25th completed the team and a win by 2 points from VPH&TH. This was enough to return the team to 2nd place overall but with VPH&TH 130 points ahead the Club's run of Met League titles looks likely to end this season.
A remarkable 46 Senior Men ran at Welwyn with Samuel Macaulay our first runner home in 25th place with Kader Seyed 20s behind in 29th place. Tom Aldred followed his fine Middlesex Championships with 33rd place the 2nd vet home and 1st V45. Andy Barnes was 4th Vet in 59th place (3rd V40) while George Saint was the 3rd U20M. Ewan Gault was the 12th A team scorer in 95th place, Other strong age group performances include Matthew Cockerill 4th V50, Justin Badger 5th V55 and Chris Hartley 4th V60 who helped the Vets A team to win their race.
In the Howard Williams trophy the Juniors sit in 2nd place on 73 points 1 point ahead of 3rd place SBH. In the Seniors the club sit in 3rd place on 43 points 2 points behind leaders VPH&TH.
In the overall rankings, with a race to go, Edith Deakin is 3rd in the U13G as is Barry Kelly in the Senior Men's standings. Rebecca Piggott is 5th place in the Senior Women.
Well done to everyone and on to Trent Park where the Club will be hosting a Met League Race for the first time since Ally Pally in 2019.”
