Middlesex 10k, Berlin Marathon and frozen triathletes
There were Heathsiders all over the place this weekend, with a massive turnout and some brilliant runs at the Middlesex 10k, a hardy group of raiders at the Berlin Marathon, a handful of hypothermic triathletes and much more!
Middlesex 10k
The biggest race of the weekend as far as the club was concerned was the Middlesex 10k. We had 25 runners out (presuming I haven't missed anyone, which I probably have) and there were some great performances with a host of PBs. Here are the highlights in brief.
Dan Madams was our first gent home in 34:13 finishing 12th overall, Clare Miller was our first lady in 39:08 (59th place) which made her first Middlesex lady
Our men got first place in the M40 category thanks to great runs from Steve, Chris and Julian and placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the M40 individual results
And our women's team came first! Clare being followed home by Ursula and Elspeth. Ursula also got third place in the W35 category
All in all, a tremendous day for the club. Apart from the vast quantity of shiny things accumulated, a great effort on the turnout and it looks like a great event to have been part of so well done to all concerned.
Marathons
While the world of athletics was rocked to its foundations by our stellar performance in the Middlesex 10k, there was the minor matter of the Berlin Marathon on Sunday in which Anthony, Chris, Maxine, Marco and tens of thousands besides toed the line with some of the world's greatest distance runners. Sadly, none of our lot could pull off a shock victory here, but there was plenty to cheer, not least Anthony breaking three hours.
"The atmosphere was fantastic with tonnes of noisy support and 80 bands along the way," bawled Anthony after the race from the roof of the Reichstag, while a crowd of concerned onlookers gathered below. "Was so great to see some Heathside support out on the course who appeared to be in great voice and evoked a small sprint across the road for a quick hi5 (which nearly killed me). "All in all, an amazing experience! Great city, great atmosphere, great medal and a cold beer at the finish line (albeit non-alcoholic). Highly recommended!"
Closer to home, Ryan McCrikerd ran 2:58:20 for a big marathon PB at Loch Ness.
Half marathons
There were also PBs galore in various half marathons on Sunday, including Tom coming 17th of several gazillion finishers in Bristol in 1:08:01, Rob running under 1:20 for the first time at the Robin Hood Half in Nottingham, and Anthony, Carl and Nick setting new bests at the inaugural Ealing Half.
"I was only running as a 'pacer' but [the Ealing Half Marathon] was a great event - very well organised, especially given that it's only the first time they've done it," chirped our resident philanthropist Alex Galloway as he jogged breezily past, followed by a long line of grim-faced west London types in adidas. From the results, I'm presuming Alex was pacing the 1:45 group, otherwise he seems to have made rather a pig's ear of his duties.
Triathlons
There were Heathsiders at a few triathlons over the weekend: Gabi finished 3rd vet at the first Dawlish Tri and Jo competed in her first event at Dorney.
We also had a team of intrepid triathletes at the Hever Castle Tri, comprising Martin, Jackie, Ruth, Dave, Howard, Hannah, Claire and Gavin.
"This was the last triathlon of the year, and with good reason. The Olympic distance (plus) started at 8am, when the frost was still on the ground and the 11oC lake covered in mist (and full of pond weed). We all froze our..." gasped Gavin between chattering teeth, while clinging to a large mug of Bovril.
After a hot bath and a spot of CPR, Gavin added: "Ruth Miller put in a spectacular performance in the middle-distance event (750m swim, officially, 40km cycle, 8km cross country run) as the first V50 woman and Jackie Wastell was second. In the Olympic event Martin Potter delivered, as always, as the second V40 and 14th overall."
Ruth was jumping for joy after the triathlon -- everyone else was just glad to be out of the water
