Middlesex AA championships and new 1500m and 10K club records
This week’s report includes some impressive performances at the Middlesex AA championships, new club records from Liam Garrett and Pete Crockford, and a few other track, marathons and road races
Middlesex AA County Championships, Lee Valley, 13-14th May 2023
Simon Baker sent in the following report from Lee Valley:
The middle of May brings the County Championships. These are the most informal of the track and field championships and a great opportunity to experience championship racing, potentially negotiating heats to reach the final, and who doesn't like to win a medal?. Plenty of Heathsiders appeared, with 13 county champions and a total of 33 medals won.
Great performances included Gabriel Edwards securing U13B sprint titles as well as High Hurdle title the latter in a new Championship best. Trey Corlis (U17M 100m) and Suraya Frost (U15G 75mH) also took the hurdles titles the later with English Schools qualification time. Magdeline Paitoo added to U17W 300m title to her bronze from the National Indoors. Dylan Mills showed his stamina taking both U15B 300m and 800m titles in two pulsating races. Lily Woolcock took the senior woman's 1500m title. Koppany Szentes won the Inaugural U15B 3000m race with an exceptionally composed run. In the field events Elkie Baker couldn't reach the heights of her 34.25m throw in the week but an opening throw of 29.85m was enough to take the title by 6m. Thomas Wasserman added the U17M Shot put title to his silver in the Hurdles.
Elsewhere there were hosts of PBS and great performances, of special mention is Rosa Cormacain who in her first 1500m secured bronze and returned the next day to take silver in the U15G 3000m. It was great to see a host of Seniors in the 5000m try to take Jerry Odlin's Championship Best set in 1977.
The wind on Saturday meant club records were impossible to break for the sprinters but Koppany Szentes and Rosa Cormacain both broke the respective U15 3000m records. Millie Bridgman-Athanasatos the U15G Triple Jump and Malia Anderson-Watson the U15G Hammer.
