Heathside triumphs at the first MYAL of the season

The relentless rain at the weekend didn’t dampen any spirits as the race round up this week shows. It was a massive weekend of racing with an absolute triumph for Heathside at the MYALs, along with wins and PBs in other events including a trail marathon, a half marathon, track events, and more. There have been a number of club records broken, and a new UK record achieved! A truly wonderful start to the season.

Dorney Half Marathon, Dorney Lake, 22.05.21

Julia Kelk had a great day at Dorney Lake, achieving a PB in the half marathon distance and come in 10th woman and 3rd in age.  She reported: “I ran the Dorney Lake Half Marathon on Saturday May 22 in 1:28:58, which had me as 10th woman and 3rd in FV40 age group (77th overall).

The temperature was perfect (10 C at the start, 12 C at the finish) although the drizzle at the beginning misled me to wear long sleeves which quickly proved to be too hot.  The course was 4 laps by the side of the lake.  As often is the case with Dorney Lake, the real challenge was the wind - there was a fairly strong headwind the whole longer way down and then a nice tailwind coming back up the shorter straight.

The event felt very Covid-safe.  You could start whenever you wanted within your time wave and it was a small event.  However, it did mean that it felt more like a solo time-trial than a race. Upon seeing the final results, I realised I could have moved up a couple of places if I had known there were women just a couple of seconds ahead of me/ had people to chase.

I was really happy with the result. I've wanted to go sub 90 min for ages but haven't had a chance to go for it, having had 2 kids in the last 5 years. “

Three Forts Challenge Marathon, Worthing, 23.05.21

Rebecca completed a superfast trail marathon on Sunday, coming in 1st woman and 3rd overall, particularly astonishing as this is her second trail marathon in 2 weeks! She reported back: “I ran my second trail marathon in two weeks (I went on a bit of a sign up binge when races started coming back). This time it was a loop through the South Downs starting at sea level in Worthing, up to Cissbury Ring, Steyning Bowl, Devil's Dyke near Brighton and back west to Chanctonbury Ring before the descent back down to Worthing. Total climb was 3,400 feet. Another great morning out, even on a rainy and windy day the Downs were magnificent. I thought I'd gone the wrong way a few times despite knowing these trails so well but I enjoyed it very much none the less.”

Middlesex Young Athletes League, 22.05.21 Finsbury Park (Field only), and 23.05.21 Perivale (track only)

Simon Baker wrote this monster of a report! : “It's quite emotional, after a 12 months hiatus, competitive Club Athletics finally returned at the weekend.  The gap has impacted many clubs with many unable to field anywhere near a full cohort of athletes, many were racing for their first time or for the first time in over a year. And wow what a return with the Club sweeping the board winning every age group.  Although this was partly due to the great turnout of the juniors with the Club competing in all but two of the events, it also demonstrates the commitment of both the Juniors and Coaches during lockdown and the willingness to try new events.

To comply with Covid restrictions and allow easier social distancing the first two matches took place over two days with one a track only meeting and the other field only.

Suraya Frost (U13G 70mH), Etienne Munday (U17M HJ), Edward Metcalf (U13B Javelin) and Trey Corlis (U15B 80mH) were part of 11 meeting records which given the conditions was some feat.

There were so many great performances it's hard to pick specifics out, but highlights included 10 year old Gabriel Edwards 27.40s in the 200m the 4th fastest by an U13B this year which followed a 4.63m in the long jump on Saturday which is the 2nd furthest by an U13B!  In his first ever javelin competition Edward Metcalf set a new meeting record for the Javelin and 11th furthest by an U13B this year.

In the U13 Girls Suraya Frost was unable to match her club record the previous day but set a new meeting record in pretty miserable conditions for a hurdle race she also won the Long Jump with a top 10 UK performance.  Kiara Corking picked up her rivalry with Posie Shaw (SBH) leading into the home straight but was unable to hold her off finishing 1st however Kiara improved her PB by 20s. Also great debut runs from Amy Kirk and Caitlin Roberts.

The U15 Boys competition was dominated by Trey Corlis who competed in 6 events the highlight of which was his 80mHurdles the 5th fastest nationally this year, although only 3rd in the 200m this was the 7th fastest in the UK this year and only 0.3s outside the club record.  Thomas Wassermann and Benjy Bediako also produced strong performances.

Among the great performances of the U15 Girls were the return to the track of the Watkins sisters who both ran under 2:26 for the 800m which with Mia, Amara and the injured Hattie shows the immense depth the club has of middle-distance runners to complement our sprint and long jump squads.

In the U17 Men Etienne Munday shone producing a last round jump of 5.74m to win the competition and improving his High Jump PB by 15cm to win the event with 1.75m.  The U17 Women saw a host of great performances including Lucy Corkin stepping up an age group to run both 300m and 800m.

Thanks to all those that helped put the events on Jonathan Litchfield and his team of officials, all those that helped get the track fit Kris, Dave, Chris and all the parents that helped on reception in the café and as taxi drivers but most of all to all the Juniors who produced such great performances and willingness to try new events.

The next meeting is again over two days with the track events at Finsbury Park on the Saturday and Field events at Perivale on Sunday.  Although it is at the end of half term it would be great to have such a great turnout again.
