Off-road challenges, triathlons, racing comebacks & more
Heathsiders are continuing to make the most of the triathlon and funky multi-sport/challenge opportunities on offer during this so-called summer, but this latest batch of results also features some traditional road running and athletics so there is no need yet for a club identity crisis.
Plus, we’re a friendly, open-minded bunch, our triathletes will soon be able to wear Heathside-branded kit to show off the trinity of navy, red and gold, and all this off-road ultra endurance stuff has got be good for the cross-country season, too. Plenty of reasons to endorse the alternative fitness programme in other words.
On that note, we have belated results from last weekend for a South Downs R'n'R' challenge that Sarah Buckton and Chris Hewertson participated in, and for a Enduroman Half Iron in the New Forest that Paul Mercer did. The Run’n’Ride is a team event, where teams of two share one bike between them and over two days have to cross 106 miles of the South Downs, sharing the running and cycling between them. Sarah and Chris did it for Asthma UK and if anyone wants to donate you can do that here.
Another event that needs explaining is the Endure 24 that Rebecca Bunting did – although on second thought maybe the name says everything … Anyway, it’s a 24 hour team relay trail race, and Rebecca ran. A lot.
On the triathlon front, Paul’s half iron man took in a 1.9km open water swim, 90km bike on the ‘undulating’ roads of the New Forest and a half marathon trail run around the grounds of Avon Tyrell outdoor pursuits centre. Closer to home but requiring an evil early morning start, seven Heathsiders took part in Race 2 of the Hillingdon Triathlon series (sprint distance). It was a smallish but competitive field dominated by Hillingdon triathletes, but we hope to be able to report podium finishes soon enough with a bit more training from our nascent tri section. Unusually, the cycle was the third leg in this tri, and after a good run a puncture meant Claire Morrissey had to take her first ever DNF. Still, she had fun. Meanwhile, Gabi got a kick out of finding herself momentarily ahead of Gavin Evans in a race (exiting the swim) – “rather novel”, she said.
On the more classic running-only/athletics side of things we had three Heathsiders race half marathons this weekend, one do a 23 mile fell run, and others did a 10 mile and 5.7 mile race. The latter featured Coach Jacob Howe, who made his racing comeback after 10 months off due to injury and was pleased, nay astonished, to finish the Newcastle city centre to Blaydown route in less than 40 minutes. Onwards and upwards! According to the race website every finisher received a “special bottle of proper beer” - brewed by Wylam Brewery in Heddon-on-the-Wall, the home village of the Blaydon Race founder, Jim Dewar.
Turning to athletics Johnny Naylor and Henry Damon from our young athletes section got some good results at the London Schools Championship. We also have full results to report from the second fixture of the Youth Development League from last weekend, where Darnell Plummer, Issayah Boers and Liam Garret did particularly well.
